WONDERFULLY SECLUDED SUBSTANTIAL HOUSE BY SEA SHORE OVERLOOKING SKYE

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Kyle of Lochalsh

3 Bedrooms, 2 double & 1 single; 1 bathroom, sleeps 5-7

Standing above Lochalsh in its own secluded grounds and surrounded by the National Trust for Scotland woodland gardens. South facing and in a magnificent setting with wonderful views of sea and the mountains of Skye rising to over 1000m. Although extremely private, lying along its own track of around 300m, it is only 3-4 minutes by car to Kyle of Lochalsh which has a railway station (the scenic railway line to Inverness really is world famous!) a bank, shops and an excellent supermarket. There is also a smaller supermarket and Post Office about a mile away. Our garden has a large lawn and is planted with Magnolias and mature species Rhododendrons from Bhutan, China and Nepal and which flower from February until August.

Doubled glazed with fitted carpets throughout; night storage heating and wood/coal burning stoves; both off-peak and instant electric hot water. If you want to keep in touch, we offer free Wireless broad band WiFi. It is a wonderful location with great privacy.

Suitability:
  • non smoking only
  • wheelchair accessible
  • suitable for elderly or infirm
  • children welcome

Guestbook comments from the manager
This is truly a perfect place for 'get away from it all' type of holiday. A really welcoming house set in its own grounds far from the madding crowd! Spotlessly clean with everything you need, plenty of hot water, cosy log and coal burning stoves and great comfortable beds, much appreciated after a day spent hiking in the surrounding areas. I feel that the house has a real friendly character and would lend itself over to whoever stays there.

The views of the sea and surrounding hills are stunning from the lounge and dining room through to all bedrooms. Leave the windows open and you can hear the waves lapping and on a clear moonlit night the moon reflecting on the water is stunning.

If you like walking, history, good food and beautiful scenery this is the place to stay. We had some delightful and interesting walks during the week in the mountains behind Balmacara, and around Glenelg, Skye, Applecross and Sheldaig. We encountered some stunning scenery ranging from deep dark lochs, emerald green forests through to bright blue seas both during our walks and car journeys.

Eating out was a delight with the Plockton Inn, at the pretty village of Plockton nearby, serving some great fish dishes and the cream tea at the Plockton Hotel was scrumptious! The Tingle Creek Hotel in Lochalsh served great fish and chips and had very friendly staff. Glenelg Inn was really charming and good for food too. The Kyle of Lochalsh Hotel was good for watching the fishing boat activity over a nice glass of wine. There are many more excellent eating and drinking places within the area, just not enough time in one week to visit them all!

Delicious sirloin and venison steaks were bought from the butchers in Lochalsh, who also sell fresh fish. Try the butchers at Lochcarron for fresh tasty monkfish, scallops and Aberdeen Angus steaks. While Portree, Skye has a great fishmonger but it is closed at the weekend and on a Monday. The Coop at Lochalsh stocks everything you need.

We would definitely recommend this house and the area for a great holiday and we hope to visit again soon!

Wonderful Location, lovely house with super garden

  • 4 out of 5
We had a super weeks holiday at Blythswood. The house is great with everything you need for a comfortable holiday. The gardens are beautiful and plenty large enough for our children and dogs to play in. There is now a neighbour,(newly built house), but does not detract from feeling secluded at all.
The owners could not have been more helpful and also a very helpful housekeeper who provided sheets for us at a small cost....not a lot of room in our car!!
We had a lot of fun in the Bay and Sound of Sleet in our Dinghy, catching plenty of Mackerel, and watching the Seals and Dolphins.
Plenty to see and do in the area. Highly recommended

Two lovely weeks at Blythswood

  • 5 out of 5
A French couple with our grown-up daughter, we spent two wonderful weeks at Blythswood Cottage in June 2010. The house makes you feel at home, thanks to the comfort and everything which is available there. The garden is lovely and the view is just baffling. The location is secluded and quiet even though it is near the main road to Kyle of Lochalsh, which offers all facilities just 5 km away.

The house is well looked after by a lady living in Balmacara village, who was very helpful. She provided us with bedsheets and towels at quite a reasonable cost, which was appreciable as we came by air.

Blythswood is a good base for exploring Skye and the Lochalsh area, knowing that driving is slow on the secondary roads (and it has to be because the landscapes are fantastic). We still had not done all we wished to in the area when leaving. A special mention to Glenelg, its ferry and its brochs, the boat trip to Loch Coruisk and a hike over there below the Black Cuillins, the steam train from Mallaig (accessible via ferry from Skye) to Ft. William, the family memories in the castles of Eilean Donan and Dunvegan, the glass-bottom boat in Kyle, Plockton village, and a number of nice walks which are described in local guides.

We would like to mention the Glenelg Inn and the Hebridean Hotel in Broadford, both for food and the first one for its special atmosphere.

We confirm all the positive comments made earlier on this ad. Not only would we recommend the house, but we would love to return there.

Truly magical location.

We spent a week over New Year at Blythswood Cottage, the weather was fairly extreme so it took a couple of days to warm the cottage through but after that it was very comfortable. The views are breathtaking and it's very well situtated for walking and visiting Skye. The gardens are particularly lovely. Blythswood offers a very peaceful retreat.

Excellent location & even better views!

Excellent location & even better views!

The directions were very good, I had no problem finding the cottage (there's a longish track to access the property, & would recommend arriving in day-light, as no street lights). The views you get upon arrival are spectacular across the Loch & the Isle of Skye. I wouldn't suggest you attempt the track in a sport car.
The house is set in it's own substantial grounds & clearly the owners love flowers/plants as it's well tended. Well worth a walk through the garden - very calming after a long drive & best of all quiet - no neighbours, no traffic - absolute peace. It's surrounded by the National Trust estate which is mostly woodland that borders the property (worth a visit only a short walk down the road).
The house itself is a mature property, details are accurate - very clean and tidy, with all of the facilities you would need for a holiday - great new bathroom, cooker, microwave etc. We used the Danish stove in the lounge on a couple of evenings which warmed the room up beautifully.
I was a little surprised to be asked to take our own bed linen having used many properties via holiday-rentals in the past, but the location/views more than made up for the hassle.
You also pay for the electricity you use - we were a family of 4, & it came to £15 for the week which I didn't think was too bad - we didn't sit in the dark or not shower.
We'd stopped off in Fort William (last Morrisons) & Oban (last Tesco) for cheap fuel & supplies so we didn't arrive completely empty handed. The area is well served by the Co-Op group with a reasonably sized store in Kyle itself about 3-miles up the road. There's an even bigger store in Broadford on Skye itself - about 20-mins away.
We ate at the Seafoood Restaurant at the railway station in Kyle - good food, portions not massive, so another course req'd. The chip shop also very good if you need a quick meal (kids starving).
Other restaurants - Loch Duich Hotel (overlooks Eilean Donan castle) - good food. The 'Taste of India' just on the other side of the Skye bridge is good (btw no longer a fee to cross the bridge so eating on Skye is no problem). The Cuillin Hills Hotel, Portree is good - not a fantastic choice. great views. Good for lunch - Sligacan Hotel.
Great base for walking or sightseeing - we ventured into Skye many times, did lots of hill-walking. It was great to going to the beach/loch shore each morning with the kids.
Highly recommend this property a great base for exploring this magnificant region.

We would certainly recommend this house to friends looking for a quiet holiday with wonderful scenery. It is large and comfortable, it is very private and has fantastic views. In good weather there is a large garden to enjoy. The location is ideal for walkers with plenty of routes in the vicinity. It is also a good location for discovering Skye and the surrounding areas.
We used the Dutch description to select this house. All information is correct except that there isn't a separate shower unit, only the shower in the bath.
Visitors are charged for electricity use.

Blythswood lies about 40 m back from the shore and faces due south overlooking Lochalsh and Skye. We are situated at the end of our own 300m private track, surrounded by the National Trust for Scotland Woodland Garden at Glaick in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The views are truly spectacular. Because of our privacy, Blythswood is a place with enormous peace and freedom and being raised up, it is nearly invisible from the shore.
