Le Petit Roc combines Les Marronniers and Le Cerisier, ideal for large groups

At one end shallow enough for toddlers, at the other deep enough for adults to dive, this exceptionally large and attractively landscaped pool is suitable for all ages. The two larger properties can be connected, perfect for extended families. Les Marronniers profits from patio doors opening out onto a private, south facing, but shaded, terrace, oak beams, and a large balcony on the west gable end. The farm house, Le Cerisier, has a traditional Charentaise fireplace, with a Jotul wood burner, in its kitchen which opens out onto its own large, south facing terrace. The separate cottage, Le Pommier, is ideal for romantic couples of all ages, even those with young children! It has separate terraces for sunny breakfasts and shaded soirées, with a private, apple tree lawn. All three gites have access to a large terrace overlooking the pool, a tennis court, football goal,boules and volley ball courts, landscaped gardens, table tennis, children's play area, sports field, and a two acre wood.

Tennis Breaks: If you are interested in some coaching or a short tennis break built around coaching and playing, contact the owner, a CCA coach.

Places to Visit & Activities: Visit Chalais' 13th century château, cloisters and 12th century church - midnight tours every Wednesday. Further afield (between 15 minutes and 1 hour) you can visit the Monolithic church at Aubeterre, be in the heart of the St. Emilion wine region, or visit the famous brandy producers in Cognac. Alternatively, head east toward the fabulous Dordogne and the famous towns of Brantôme (the Venice of South West France) and Périgueux, the 'Walnut Capital'.

The coast is an hour's drive away. For unspoilt fishing villages or seaside resorts take your pick, although the Arcachon Basin and both the Dune of Pyla or Cap Ferret are worth a special mention.

For the more adventurous there is horse riding, canoeing, both lake and river swimming, as well as cycling, fishing, tennis and golf all within 15 minutes drive. Many of the river and lakeside beaches ( 'baignades' ) offer bars, restaurants, beach volley ball, playground activities and water slides.

Sport and Fitness: Bruce Evans is a very experienced P.E. teacher and sports coach: if you want your children to improve their skills and game knowledge, get some exercise, and enjoy a break yourselves, please contact me in advance on 00 33 5 45 78 55 38 to discuss possible activities and times. A beautiful, converted barn with private south and west facing terraces, shaded by huge chestnut trees. The large lounge/dining area opens out, via sliding patio doors, onto the south terrace, ideal for al fresco breakfasts and evening barbecue's. Off the lounge is the fully equipped, modern kitchen, with the front door opening onto the west terrace, perfect for sun downer drinks. The main bathroom is also on the ground floor and comprises bath, washbasin and large shower; with a w.c., bidet and basin in an adjoining room. The oak stair case leads to an open lounge area which has two single bed settees beneath beautiful, exposed oak beams. This area and the first bedroom lead, via separate French windows, onto a large west facing balcony which allows superb sunset view over the surrounding countryside. Two other large, family bedrooms, both with fully tiled en suite shower rooms, complete the first floor. The fourth double bedroom with vanity sink is situated on the ground floor.

About Bruce & Christine Evans

Bruce grew up in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, Christine in Poissy, west of Paris. We spent 14 years together in Pembrokeshire before moving out to the Charente. Our children go to school in Chalais, Christine is on the PTA, and Bruce is vice President of the tennis club.

We looked at properties throughout Poitou Charente over Easter 2006, but Le Petit Roc was our favourite before we set out and even though we first saw it on a rainy day, we didn't change our minds.

The small commune of Saint Avit is surrounded by sunflower fields and woods in the countryside between Chalais and the beautiful village of Aubeterre. Three kilometres from the Monday market and shops of Chalais, and ten minutes drive from Aubeterre and the River Dronne, this is paradise for those seeking cultural or outdoor activities, or simply the tranquillity of the countryside. Within a short drive are the market towns of Barbezieux, Coutras and Riberac, whilst the Roman city of Angouleme is forty minutes away to the north. To the south west is Bordeaux and its celebrated vineyards. A day at and around Saint Emilion is highly recommended. Just beyond Bordeaux is the Arcachon basin, the Dune Of Pyla and Cap Ferret, a beautiful destination for a day trip

Notes:
One family room has a mezzanine, a double bed and two singles with en-suite facilities, the second family room has four single beds with en suite facilities. The balcony is very safe with child locks. The superb 18m x 7m pool is set in an enclosed area of 200 m² with a locking gate for security. The pool, surrounded by wooden decking, palm trees, exotic plants, sun loungers and hammocks, is at its most spectacular when illuminated on balmy evenings for those magical midnight swims. Alternatively, admire the view of the pool from the upper terrace eating area where you will find a barbecue, sink, work tops and electric points.
