Memorable and Unique Historic Apartment
Five of us stayed in this well-appointed and spotless apartment over Christmas 2013. It was truly charming and a place that all of us (3 adults, 2 kids under 10) will remember fondly from our visit to Paris. The apartment is small in usable living area but none of us felt crowded as the multiple levels, high ceilings and central stair made it seem a lot larger. The oldest in our party, at 74, found the stairs a little challenging after a day of walking around Paris but she managed. The kids on the other hand, loved having the huge spiral stair to go up and down. The 2nd floor living room/kitchen was on the cozy side when all five of us were gathered for a meal and the kitchen is definitely a one person space but it was well stocked with cooking implements and dishes. We did our grocery shopping at the Carrefour around the corner and there are various bakeries, restaurants, etc. nearby. The shower room is located on the 3rd floor ensuite to the bedroom and comes with a towel warmer - a nice touch. The toilet room is located on its own across the stairwell, also on the 3rd floor.
Be prepared to make up your own beds the first night. I was fine with that as the 1st floor loft bed would have been very hard for someone to make without climbing on it and I wouldn't have wanted that. The kids enjoyed sleeping in this space although it's a long haul up the stairs to the toilet in the middle of the night.
The metro is just a block away and the neighborhood isn't touristy at all. It felt very safe the entire time we were there.
Christian was the person who met us and he was very friendly and helpful. He forgot to mention that the water heater only refilled at night so with five of us, we learned the hard way the first night when we ran out of hot water (there's a switch to override). Shouldn't be a problem if there aren't as many people or if you are used to water heaters being on a timer. On the day we left, he came by to collect the keys and also called a taxi for us.
I communicated with the owner via e-mail for all the arrangements and although I had moments of trepidation, it being the first time using VRBO, it all worked out really well. Bettina is very responsive and trustworthy.
