About Tony Bull

A native of Leigh on Sea in Essex I got to know this area in 1974 when we arranged an exchange for our children with a French military family whose 'summer and family home' was in this area. After many visits to this family we purchased, 1989, our own 'holiday home' in Bellenot. On my retirement in 1995 we moved permanetly to Bellenot. In 2001 we purchased a barn to store a small sailing dinghy and with it came a semi derelict cottage which had not been lived in for sixty years A local society then approached us and asked could we not save the cottage from becoming a ruin. This we did and, as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Tony Bull purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Tony Bull chose Pouilly en Auxois

My own children and grandchildren together with other family members and friends have, since 1989, enjoyed coming to this area time after time. This is one very important reason why we renovated the cottage so that it could all be enjoyed by others.

What makes this cottage unique

The grandparents of the local farmer, now retired, who sold us the property is delighted that his old family home, which had not been lived in for 60years, has been saved and is being enjoyed by so many people. We have been delighted to welcome many guests from all over the world who, without exception, have fallen in love with both the cottage and the surrounding area. In particular they have really enjoyed cycling along the canal and in the surrounding countryside. (modern bikes are at our guests disposal and others can be hired fro Pouilly), visiting all the many historic sites, enjoyed Dijon and Beaune (in particular sampling the wine at Beaune and other famous wine villages), swimming in the reservoir, A pleasure boat operates from Pouilly giving canal trips even passing through a 3km tunnel under the town. There are many way marked walks in this beautiful & sparsly occupied area. One guest said that if there is a paradise on earth then this must surly either be it or very near to it!

Wonderful French Experience

  • 5 out of 5
Our family loved our stay in this cosy but spacious farmhouse. The location is nice and rural, but still within five minutes drive of a good supermarket, great bakeries and butcher. For a short term rental property, it is exceptionally well equipped for enjoying cooking and partaking of the local offerings. Good coverage of English language cable channels, as well as videos and DVDs for use. Easy access to the beautiful areas of Dijon and Beaune. The owner provided us with a warm welcome, along with a great basket of local produce. We would recommend this to any families or couples wanting to enjoy a relaxing holiday in this beautiful are.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to entertain this young Australian family who found that the cottage met with their high and demanding standards.
I am delighted that Peter & Robyn made full use of all the facilities of the cottage and enjoyed exploring the beautiful countryside and the historic towns, some of wich date back to Roman times. They also found time to visit the famouse wine villages and towns located close by.
However, all the above being said, I suspect that they "ran out of time" and were unable to take advantage of the many other attractions on offer which including trips on the canal passenger boat based at Pouilly or steam railway at Bligny, white water rafting in the Morvan, fishing, golfing and many others.

A lovely place to stay

  • 5 out of 5
It’s hard to add much to all of the positive reviews, and in fact it’s all true. This is a super place to stay. Tony’s welcome is as warm as they all say, and the facilities provided in this sympathetically-renovated cottage were all we needed and more. Bellenot provides an excellent centre for exploring this part of Burgundy; almost every village is mediaeval, and the locals proud to share their heritage with you in a relaxed and friendly way.
There is much too much to see in a week, although of course we tried. From Vézelay and Fontenay in the north, to Bibracte (don’t miss it!) in the south, taking in smaller places in between. Take the small roads – you won’t regret it. And then, of course, there’s Dijon, Beaune, and much more besides. We stayed during the Journées du Patrimoine so managed to visit some places that are usually not open to the public (if you get the chance, the Chateau de Eguilly is remarkable).
All of this says that we recommend “Les Rossignols” wholeheartedly, and hope to be back. Thanks, Tony !

Charming cottage in Bellenot

  • 5 out of 5
We loved the cottage and surroundings. The cottage is very well equipped, cosy and comfortable, with charm and history and perfect for a home base. Also clean and well maintained.

The local town of Pouilly has enough shops for food and wine and a couple of bars to be sociable.

A perfect place to stay, thanks Tony for a wonderful holiday in your cottage and we would certainly recommend this property.

Lovely house, peaceful setting, wonderful host

  • 5 out of 5
This well-kept, clean and beautifully renovated farmhouse was the perfect place to stay while enjoying Burgundy. We were welcomed with a wonderful basket of local food, all of which we enjoyed over our stay. The house itself is bright and well-equipped and when it got a bit chilly we just built a fire and it was warm in no time. It's close to any amenity you would need and the surrounding area was full of places to explore. Our host Tony was most helpful and truly a delightful person to visit with. This would be a great house for a couple, a small family, or as we were, four adults. We don't hesitate to recommend this if you're looking for a quiet country holiday. Oh yes, and we found all of the locals the friendliest we had encountered in our 3 weeks in France!

Nice French style cottage in quiet village

  • 4 out of 5
Wonderful welcome basket provided by excellent and considerate host. The description of the cottage was accurate except for WiFi (host invited us to use his). Property clean and generally well maintained but boiler for hot water had to be re-lit a couple of times. Supplementary heating from log burning stove was great (logs supplied). Would recommend the cottage to friends - it is an excellent base for touring the area. We visited Beaune and Dijon and several of the local historic towns and especially enjoyed the Burgundy canal boat trip and the steam train at Bligny. The local town Pouilly has all facilities and very good food at the Hotel du Commerce. Maison de Pays was very useful for beautiful gifts to bring home.

A beautiful, charming and well-equipped cottage

  • 4 out of 5
This is a lovely cottage in a wonderful setting. I stayed there on my own, but it would be a comfortable size even at full occupancy. The building has been renovated to a high standard and the appliances are modern. I'm really glad I brought my astronomical telescope with me, because the skies were clear and free of light pollution all week. Once the streetlights go out in the evening, the sky is ablaze with stars, and I've never seen the Milky Way so clearly (at least, not from anywhere so easy to reach by road). The owner, who lives in the village, is extremely helpful and very professional. All in all, I would recommend this cottage, and this part of France, to anyone looking for the peace and quiet of a rural location, but suprisingly close to the amenities of a nearby small town and the autoroute network. The famous vineyards of Chablis (white wine, to the NW) and the Cote d'Or (globally famous reds, to the E) are a short and picturesque drive away - and I took advantage of both. Testing out my purchases during a barbecue on the secluded patio while waiting for the sun to set and the stars to come out, I felt very pleased with my choice of this cottage.
