Villa Roza sits high on a ridge over looking sea at southern entrance to Souda Bay. The villa is a modern split level, open plan with living spaces, elegantly furnished with cool high sloping ceilings The adjacent bedroom wing has 2 double bedrooms and a bathroom. There is a modern fitted kitchen & utility, a separate shower room off the internal staircase leading to the 1st floor 'Tower Room'. This is a twin bedroom, with two very private sun terraces, facing east and west. Outside there are 5 terraces; 2 to the north, for cooling sea breezes, 1 covered 'sunset' to the west, 1 'sun trap' to the south/west, 1 eastern entrance, is vine covered. All windows & doors have mosquito screens & sun blinds. Garden borders adjacent to the villa are cultivated with shrubs, flowers, fruit trees, herbs, bougainvillea climbers. The swimming pool is 10 x 5 m 0.4-1.3 meters deep with a Roman bath stepped end. The remainder of the garden is wild with boundary stone walls & main entrance gate
This Villa is beautifully designed. The views from all seven terraces are amazing! What sunsets!! Butterflies and birds flutter and fly over the well kept but natural gardens. You can always find a comfortable place to rest or eat in or out of the sun/wind. The pool is substantial and clean and the house itself was cool, even when the temperature reached 34 degrees C outside. This place is an exceptional treat. I will be coming again!
I have nothing but good things to say about Villa Rosa! Absolutely beautiful Villa & breath-taking views! We would spend our mornings in the very relaxing & spacious pool & go into the villages in the afternoon & evenings! This was our best vacation ever....thanks to the owner, Chris, who answered all of my many questions & also a big thanks to Yvonne who takes care of the place for Chris......very kind & helpful! There is plenty to do around Crete & it was such a pleasure after a long adventuresome day to come home to such a warm & comfortable Villa....& did I mention the fantastic view :) !!!!!!
Thanks again Chris & Yvonne for making this a very unforgettable vacation......We absolutely loved our stay. After reading this review, I wouldn't know any reason for you not to stay here!!! You will not be sorry :)
Everything about staying at Villa Rosa was great. It is a beautiful, well maintained villa. The location is perfect for visiting the western villages of Plaka, Almyrida, Kalives and driving to Chania. It's easy to get to Vamos, litsarda, Gavalahori. There is a taverna straight down the road, just a walk away for a drink and some food. Kokkino Horio is a picturesque old village, perched on a hill. Not much to see there but there is a wonderful glass blowing factory where we picked up some beautiful souvenirs.
The sunsets from Villa Rosa are breathtaking. The pool was very, very well maintained. The grounds are lanscaped and gorgeous. Chris' photos of villa Rosa do not do it justice, you have to be there to see how beautiful it really is.
The housekeeper is very friendly. There could have been more towels and toilet paper left for us when the housekeeper came and she only cleaned the villa once during our six night stay, I thought that she should have came twice. We had to take our garbage out, which a cat tore into, so we had to find garbage bins in kokkino Horio to take our garbage to. We travelled with four young kids, so you can imagine that having enough towels would have been important, only one bathroom had toilet paper for the last 2 or 3 days we were there.
Chris is very helpful. He left these great Wonderful World of Wizz ride on toys for the kids, which they loved! There was a high chair and playpen for the baby. It was very well equipped.
Thank you to Chris for allowing us to stay at your Villa! I dream of coming back!
We have just returned from one of the best holdays we've ever had and I feel a need to put on record my appreciation.
Villa Rosa really does delight by exceeding the highest expectations, a rare thing in my experience of the travel trade. The views are quite simply fantastic, the pool generous the garden large and the silence and tranquility captivating. As you walk around when you arrive your jaw will drop. The absence of a/c worried us before we arrived but it is truly not an issue, even with daytime temperatures in the mid 30's the villa is always cool and comfortable, Sleeping is not a problem, there are no disco's here, and with the windows open there's a cool breeze whilst the screens keep the insects out. We didn't use insect repellant yet we've never had fewer holiday bites.
The property is lavishly equipped and everything is modern, clean and well maintained. There are more loungers, chairs, patios and tables than you could ever use but there's so much space it doesn't feel cluttered. Although totally unobtrusive you sense that Chris and his local prople are always there to ensure that everything runs smoothly for you.
The village has real local character, it's not a soulless holiday construction. There's a good taverna, that the locals use, only 5 minutes walk away so if you like a glass of wine with your evening meal there's no need to drive. The local minimarket is the same distance and stocks the necessities of life and more.
This truly is a holiday for peaceful relaxation but if you want lively it's less than 10 minutes by car or taxi. If you want really lively you probably should be somewhere else.
I'll stop going on and start planning to go back next year!
Our week at Villa Rosa was enchanting; Crete, the villa itself, the view, all added to one of the best family holidays we've ever had (parents, two teens, a preteen and my sister-in-law). But what was even more special was that the owner, Chris, on hearing the week before our arrival that my wheelchair-ridden sister-in-law was accompanying us, without us asking, made arrangements that accommodated my sister-in-law’s special needs.
We have nothing but positive comments about villa Roza; it was everything we wanted and more. When we look for a villa we search for seclusion and privacy and good views. I recall Chris (the owner) saying that the pictures cannot capture the essence of what the villa has to offer – how right he was. The view when you first walk into the villa through to the terrace is totally breathtaking – truly, truly stunning – you just have to be there!
The weather was very hot, just how we like it but the position of the villa ensures a wonderful cooling breeze. The villa was discretely and well maintained during our stay; all facilites are available and of high quality (including lots of books and CDs for your leisure, even binoculars and telescope to appreciate the views!).
The location makes a car essential as with most villas. There is a taverna & small supermarket in the village approx 5 mins walk and more tavernas in Plaka approx 5 mins drive. We preferred to take a 10 min drive into Almyrida – a small and friendly resort with a great atmosphere, a fabulous beach and some excellent beachfront tavernas.
We flew into Heraklion – would use Chania airport next time as the villa is approx 2 hours from Heraklion whereas Chania is 40 mins.
Villa Roza is on the outskirts of Kokkino Horio (Red Village) a small hilltop village close to the northern coast and a few kilometres east of Almirida. A sleepy traditional village of narrow streets and a square with eucalyptus trees. The villa is 6 minutes level walk from a taverna in the old school grounds at the beginning of the lane. It sits high on a ridge over looking the sea at the entrance to Souda Bay and is set in the middle of it's own grounds of 1.5 acres, among ancient stone 'wheat' terraces with wild almond & pear trees. There are panoramic views of 270 degrees, over looking the sea to 'Akrotiri' peninsula in the north, the Turkish Fort at 'Aptera' in the west & the 'White Mountains' to south & southwest.
