Samoëns and surroundings

The only ski resort to be listed 'Town of Art and History' by the Caisse National des Monuments Historiques (National Fund for Monuments), this commune of Haute Savoie was awarded a 'Coq d'Or' (Golden Cockerel) that award the most beautiful villages of France.

Directly linked to the ski area of the Grand Massif, 8 min by cable car, the village benefits from 265 km of slopes and more than 30 km of cross-country skiing lanes.

In summer, many possibilities of hiking, including the natural reserve of Sixt Fer a Cheval.

The presence of many limestone quarries, exceptional for their hardness, the necessity for men to complete their low incomes (that they get with their agriculture activities) encouraged a long time ago the appearance and the development of an activity of construction, carving and sculpting in the Haute Vallée du Giffre and especially in Samoëns.

The renowned bricklayers of Samoëns, once called the Frahans, were working on construction sites in Europe.

Today the village perpetuates the tradition of carving and sculpting the stone, organizing every two years a Symposium of the stone. This European event lasts one week and is the opportunity to invite international artists to express themselves with a work, to do initiation workshops for these activities and to present conferences and meetings on this subject.
