Nice, but ....

  • 3 out of 5
This is a nice apartment. It is well located for sightseeing; it is clean and comfortable; it is well equipped and well maintained.
However if you are looking for somewhere quiet you should probably look elsewhere. Because of its location the apartment is very noisy at night, especially at the weekend, due to the many bars and restaurants in the adjoining streets.
My main concern with the rental is that, despite several requests, the owners have been unwilling to issue me with a receipt for the period of our stay. Since we stayed at the apartment on a business trip, we wanted to claim our expenses and have had problems doing so because we couldn't get the necessary receipt from the owners. I can think of only one reason why they would be reluctant to acknowledge the payment of monies paid to them and I find this disappointing. I can only suggest that if you need a receipt you should request it at the time of payment not post hoc as we did. This problem has soured my otherwise pleasant memories of the apartment.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review. Indeed this summer in Lisbon was particulary animated due to succes in terms of tourism and very nice weather! Portuguese people and tourists love to spend time outside home, this may be different in other countries but in South of Europe, specially in city center you can hardly avoid. I would qualify the noise as "normal" for a big Southern European city. Moreover, the apartment is very well isolated with double glass windows. If you keep it closed you cannot hear anything.
Concerning the second point I would qualify as misunderstanding, as during the check in we proposed a receipt and the answer was " No thanks I do not need". May be you have changed your mind? No problem ! if you wish to receive a receipt we can deliver any time, please just contact us.
We do this rental not for money but only for pleasure. We love to meet people, we love our apartment and of course we love to help people discover our beautiful city!
Thanks for all

Terrific Apartment

  • 4 out of 5
This is a very nice apartment in a great location. It's close to Barrio Alto, with its restaurants and bars, which can be very loud until 3 a.m., but with the windows closed you don't hear the noise. The apartment itself is modern, comfortable and clean, with everything you might need. It has an elevator so you don't have to lug your bags up stairs, too, which is nice. We would stay there again. Note for hot summer months: There's no air conditioning, so you'll want to use the floor fan in the bedroom at night.

Nice apartment but BEWARE

  • 2 out of 5
On May 2014 my wife and I rented this apartment for 4 weeks. The apartment is nice, secure, with a functional layout, very bright and clean and has a good Wi-Fi connection. The location is good because you can reach by foot most of Lisbon’s sightseeing places and there is a subway station nearby. In general the apartment is as described in the VRBO listing and pictures with two exceptions:

1. The apartment does NOT have ceiling fans which are essential on hot days (the VRBO listing says it does)

2. There is a LARGE BLACK MOLD AREA AND INFILTRATION on one of the kitchen walls. This problem is overdue and THE APARTMENT SHOULD NOT BE RENTED until this is addressed.

The apartment has two windows (living room and bedroom) both facing one of Bairro Alto’s narrow streets which have many small restaurants, tiny bars and clubs. Because these locals are so small, most of the drinking and socializing happens on the streets and the neighbourhood gets very noisy at night and littered with garbage. Particularly it gets unbearable noisy on Friday and Saturday nights making it impossible to sleep before 3 AM when the locals close and the patrons leave the streets. Regretfully some of these people urinate on the streets and because of this every Saturday morning the streets are washed. The view from the apartments’ windows is an eye-sore: unfortunately you see all the overflowing garbage containers from the several restaurants, bars and clubs.
Because of these reasons we do not recommend renting this apartment

Owner's Response: Our main concern as owners is always to satisfy our guests, make them feel good and help them to enjoy as much as possible the stay in the beautiful city of Lisbon. We do this as we love our guests, our city and our apartment. All reviews (old and recent ) prove that!
We accept critics when these are constructive as we are eager to always improve the comfort of our guests.
This review, we respect but cannot agree at all as it does not correspond to the reality and bring us to clarify some points.
1- regarding the fans, we do have mobile fans not ceiling fans, unfortunately the customer never brought this issue to us during his stay. Phone numbers, mails and direct contact with owners were possible during the whole stay. It is questionable why this is coming up after the stay?
2- there is no large neither black mold area and infiltration in the apartment. Unfortunately we cannot attach pictures of the walls to prove that. In fact a refresh painting in a small area (less than 0,5 Sqm) above the fridge is needed and will be done in the first available possibility ( not during a guest stay). This situation absolutely does not affect the stay of our guest neither the comfort. Recent reviews can prove that.
The apartment is located in city center, as such noise correspond to a city center noise, no more and not less. The noise addressed in the review is fully exaggerated. In fact during the guest stay, a long weekend with a bank holiday in Lisbon which is usually very animated in all city's area brought a little more noise that usual. But in any case this cannot be considered as this guests is trying to say as usual. If someone do not like animation should not come to Lisbon and not only to our apartment during this long weekend !
Moreover the apartment has a double glass windows and closing them avoid any disruption during the night for such occasions.
We regret this review which once again was written in a destructive way which we fully cannot understand the reasons as once again we love our guests, our city and apartment.
Hope this brig

Excellent Apartment

  • 5 out of 5
This is an excellent apartment. It is well-maintained, spotlessly clean, quiet, and well-furnished. It has all the modern conveniences--clothes washer, dish washer, TV, etc., etc. The WiFi is fast and reliable. There is an elevator. The apartment owners--Marc and Carina-- are great and very helpful. Marc will respond to your rental inquiries almost immediately, and Carina will spend all the time you need to get the lay of the land.
Across the street is a Fado theater with a pretty good show. But don't sit in front rows since their sound system is not very good, and the performers unfortunately use microphones. Of course the mics detract from the intimacy of the performance. Also there is a bank ATM across the street. Be aware that In Portugal you are allowed to withdraw only Euro 200 twice a day.
It is a steep walk uphill to the apartment from downtown Lisbon if you decide to forego taxis. But do not rent a car to see Lisbon. The street system and the traffic back-ups make driving very complex and challenging. It's better to use a taxi; they are not expensive. If you use a taxi to get to the apartment, tell the driver to take you to Rua da Misericordia and then tell him to stop when you see the apartment building at Travessa da Espera 3. Do not tell the driver to take you to Travessa da Espera. The back-street complex off Misericordia is complex, and inevitably the driver will enter the address in his GPS and proceed to get himself/herself lost. Cars cannot access Misericordia from Travessa or the reverse.
The neighborhood is bustling, but it lacks a near-by supermarket and a really good restaurant. For the former, you need to take a rather long down-hill walk to the MiniPreco. It has a good selection of foods and wines. But take a taxi back to the apartment with your supplies unless you are into long-distance, up-hill hauling.
As for restaurants, we highly recommend the Floresta do Salitre at Rua do Salitre 42D--not far from Avenida da Liberdade. It is an easy walk down hill from the apartment; the walk back is more of a challenge. This is a family-owned restaurant that offers well-prepared and generous portions of food at reasonable prices. It is popular with the locals, and is highly ranked on Trip Advisor. The grilled pork and the grilled grouper were in particular excellent. The service is polite and attentive. Their wine and their own-private port are high quality and a bargain. They do not take credit cards.

great stay in Lisbon

  • 5 out of 5
Spent 4 nights here in Lisbon. The apartment was in the perfect location. Most sites we walked to but were also close to the metro and walking distance to the train for Belem and Cascias. Lots of great night life in the area and terrific restaurants. The apartment was very well furnished including local maps and tour books. Our host spent plenty of initial time with us answering any questions we had.
