Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Xlendi Bay, Gozo - Azure Escapes

Frequent repeat guests and high reviews for many years. 1 min from sandy beach

We named our property “Azure Escapes” for a good reason as it really is a place to kick back, unwind and escape everyday life for a while. Originally a girls school, the building, built from the local creamy limestone, has been cleverly converted into bright and spacious apartments in the seafront village of Xlendi, while our road “Ta’Karolina” is named after a convent of nuns who used to bathe in the nearby bay.

We offer good quality self catering accommodation in an ideal location, being set back against the commanding cliffs that surround Xlendi Bay, in a quiet cul-de-sac, yet only a two minute walk to the beach and village. Xlendi is undeniably very pretty with the village being centred around the horseshoe shaped bay that is superb for snorkelling, swimming and diving with its own natural reef. The beach is ideal for children as it gently slopes down to the water with several restaurants that overlook it, meaning you can relax while the children play. The bay is especially suited for those wishing to try diving as you can swim out from the edge and there is plenty to see even up to the 10 metre trial dive limit. There are plentiful restaurants within a few minutes walk as well as a superb gelateria while a very friendly fruit and vegetable man and van visits every week day.

With tastefully decorated bedrooms, large open plan living area with balcony overlooking the village and a kitchen equipped with fridge freezer, halogen hob, coffee maker etc together with numerous guide books and local information, our apartment offers you a peaceful retreat whatever time of year you choose to visit.

Airport transfers and car rental can be arranged. All bookings include free WIFI, welcome grocery pack, linen and indoor towels, maid service and local assistance.

About Elaine Meli

As my husbands family still live in Malta, we have been regular visitors to the islands since I lured him away from the sunshine to live in the UK many years ago. He claims he is still waiting for summer to arrive! Needing a bolthole from the hecticness that comes with being part of a large and noisy Mediterranean family, we bought our first property in Xlendi in 2003. It's only when several friends and colleagues began asking if they could visit that we thought maybe renting was the way to go. The overwhelming interest took us by surprise, so we felt more confident in buying our second property in 2007 this time with a pool because us Brits do love to swim in a pool rather than the sea! Desperately not wanting to fall into the pot of cliches, but both places truly are magical, charming and soooo relaxing.

Elaine Meli purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Elaine Meli chose Xlendi Bay, Gozo

I used to live in Malta and Xlendi was the first place I visited in Gozo. I just love the location and the friendly village feel to it, even in the height of summer. The shopkeepers have always got a smile and time to chat. It's a great place for a morning swim then you can relax while having your post workout cappucino on the waterfront or equally a great place to sit in the evening with a drink while the harbour lights sparkle on the water. There is a great choice of restaurants that defy the size of the village and the best gelateria by far on the island. If I sound like a walking gastronomic advert, well it can't be helped really and you will see what I mean once you have been there. It's a pretty well connected village by Gozitan standards with a regular bus service running from early morning until late at night, and the nearest bus stop is just a couple of minutes from the apartment.

What makes this apartment unique

Our apartment is in a quiet residential cul-de-sac set back against the cliffs so there is no traffic passing in front of us or behind for that matter! It is a large apartment and being third floor it looks out over the rooftops of the village, rather than at a brick wall, so it is bright and airy too. There are very few apartments in the flat village area of Xlendi, so our location is pretty special as you can enjoy the amenities yet still be in a quiet location. The apartment is very spacious and individually furnished, with beautiful views over the village. It makes me smile .... and I hope it does you too ...

Exactly as promised...

Elaine’s apartment was exactly as described on the website and as shown in the photos. It’s a good size for holiday accommodation and provides an ideal base for anyone staying in Xlendi as it’s just a minute’s walk from the sea front. The rooms are spacious and clean and the kitchen is equipped to cater for holiday style catering requirements. The balcony faces inland, rather than the sea, and catches the morning sun through until just before noon (in March). As other reviewers have mentioned and I can testify there is a flock of geese, together with a cockerel residing about 25 metres away, but the bedrooms are situated on the inside/far side of the apartment, so whilst these are still audible at times the inevitable dawn chorus is reduced to acceptable levels. Elaine provided lots of detailed information and happily answered all of our pre holiday queries which was very useful. We went in late March, so pretty much had the entire block, if not the street, to ourselves. Happy to recommend.

Clean, huge, and in Gozo's most beautiful village

Clean, huge, and in Gozo's most beautiful village
  • 5 out of 5
We did a lot of searching for a good value apartment in Gozo, but it was surprise to discover that this huge 3rd floor apartment was also in by far the the most interesting village in Gozo. As well as being visually dramatic and a great place for strolling/reading/watching the sunset and setting out on hikes, Xlendi is also the only place in Gozo – in early April, anyway – that has any semblance of nightlife. From six or seven restaurants there was always at least one open, with Ta' Karolina particularly brilliant. Still a quiet village though.
The town is down a steep (though recently tarmaced) road that does separate it from the rest of Gozo, principally because we couldn't find a bus service. So a car is probably worth having, though probably less so here because of all the restaurants; you wouldn't have to leave save for the lack of a grocery store.
Initially we were a bit disappointed that the apartment didn't overlook the sea, and soon also feared the nearby birds (peacocks, cockerels, geese ...) would keep us awake, though neither was an issue.
Note that the spacious balcony is only in sunshine in the morning, until about midday – so lazy mornings and busy afternoons is the best way to make best use of the apartment.
In all other respects the property was excellent – huge and great value, with a large bathroom and a useful pack of groceries when we arrived.

Beautiful Gozo!

  • 5 out of 5
The apartment is beautiful, the photos do not do it justice! It is so clean, spacious and the balcony provides a relaxing place to sit and read with gorgeous views. The apartment has been well thought out with everything you need, and lots of holiday information about Gozo. We parked outside the apartment block with no trouble and the sea is just around the corner.
Xlendi is a really pretty, peaceful bay with stunning views and walks, if it isn't too hot, (we come from Cornwall and it is similar to look at but with constant sunshine!) We stayed mid July and it was really hot,the daily swims in the clear blue sea were divine. If you have a family there are various cheap inflatable sea toys/snorkels/lilos for sale as the sea is safe for children.
The food in Xlendi restaurants is amazing the best we have ever eaten! Sitting outside the restaurant on a hot evening by the sea with all the candles twinkling is just magical! Read the visitors book for recommendations on the best places to eat and make sure you try the ice cream it is delicious! We popped into Victoria for food shopping supplies and went to The Duke supermarket which is really good and similar to home.
We did the boat trip to Comino and Blue Lagoon which was worth seeing, although go later in the day as it is very busy. We booked at Xlendi and had free transport to the harbour which made it a hassle free trip.
We really enjoyed our holiday in Xlendi and would recommend this apartment to anyone who wanted a relaxing break with lots of sun, swimming and good food!

A great place to unwind

  • 5 out of 5
We made the right choice with this apartment, it was very clean and bright and close to the sea. The restaurants in the village are all really good value and the service was always faultless and cheerful. We spent many hours just people watching. We didn't hire a car but you don't need it with the local buses. We would certainly recommend it to anyone who visits Xlendi and will be going back. There is a vistors book in the apartment, which has some good tips but don't believe everything you read and try things out for yourself.

Relaxing honeymoon

  • 5 out of 5
It was lovely to spend our first week of the honeymoon in the apartment.
The weather was just perfect (mid March, warm and sunny) and it was lovely that it was off peak so it was nice and quiet.
There are lovely restaurants (right by the water front) literally about 3 minutes away from the apartment, so it was very handy.
Victoria was only 10 minutes bus ride away (or a leisurely 45 minutes) where there are more amentities.
The apartment was big and the airport transfer was good.
One big plus is that the cleaner certainly does a great job as the apartment was spotless.
There is a little book in the apartment in which previous guests write little notes/tips...there were some useful points worth taking a look.
All in all, great.

October 09 Relaxing and peaceful...

  • 5 out of 5
We really enjoyed our stay in Xlendi. The appartment was very well placed. Peaceful and safe but only a minute away from all the restaurants and the sea. Temperature was fantastic and we appreciated the fans.
The stairs were good exercise and the appartment was very clean and spacious. We felt at home here and could easily have stayed longer. Thank you for letting us stay in your home.
We were pleased to have a car for getting around the island but the buses seemed very popular and cheap. So much to see on this island that we didn't get round it all yet. However we found it very tempting to just stay in Xlendi and enjoy the scenery, the snorkelling and the fantastic sea temperature!!
Highly recommended.

XLENDI VILLAGE

Our apartment is located in the flat village area of Xlendi within a minutes walk to the local grocery and souvenir shops, cafes, bars and restaurants; many of them situated on the seafront.

There are some excellent restaurants for a village of this size with a choice of Italian pizza and pasta, local cuisine and fish and seafood.

The warm, gentle waters of Xlendi Bay are ideal for families with children because of the protection from strong currents provided by the natural reef surrounding the bay. This reef also makes Xlendi particularly appealing for experienced and beginner divers alike due to the abundance of marine wildlife and superb visibility.

Xlendi has several diving centres, a bank with cashpoint, Tourist Information centre and a fruit and veg van comes at 1pm each day (not always at weekends). There is a regular bus service and the nearest stop is 2 mins.

The apartment is an excellent base for exploring the rest of the island with the capital Victoria and its' markets only 5 minutes by road. We are just 7 minutes from Dwerja and the Azure Window and only 10 minutes from the red sandy bay of Ramla

Many people don't realise how stunning the islands still are in the autumn and even the winter – yes, we do get the odd cold spell and rainy day but also a lot of days with brilliant blue skies and sunshine. Off season it makes this area all the more magical ... less tourists to compete with and a more leisurely pace to be taken.

For water lovers, the islands offer some of the best diving in the Mediterranean. There is a wealth of choice for complete novices through to challenging wreck dives for the more experienced. Trial dives in the calm clear waters of Xlendi Bay are a great place to start and from the tender age of eight, children can take the Padi Bubblemaker course to introduce them to the world of scuba diving in a pool in less than six feet of water. In addition to the Mediterranean Sea and many beaches just a short drive away, there is windsurfing, sailing and kitesurfing. If you prefer a slower pace and a little more peace, you could try deep sea fishing, or take a leisurely cruise around the rugged coastline or just enjoy swimming in one of the many beautiful hidden bays.

We are on the island with the oldest freestanding Neolithic temples in the world; they make Stonehenge and the Pyramids look like new builds! Both Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are in the south of Malta but well worth the trip, plus you can also combine it with a trip to the famous Hypogeum, a vast underground burial chamber where over 7,000 human bones were discovered. The most intact temple is on Gozo itself; Ggantija (meaning Giant) was reputed to have been built by a local giantess.

Walkers, cyclists and horse lovers can explore the breathtaking local scenery – most of it so unspoilt … There are the caves of Xaghra , the nature reserve at Ta Cenc, numerous country walks where you can explore the island's unique flora, folklore and maritime museums, the busy market towns of Xaghra and Victoria, windmills, the craft village at Gharb, and a positive plethora of baroque churches!

Talking of food, there are many local delicacies to try. Seafood and shellfish are in abundance. Fish soups, home-made pizzas, aromatic fruit and vegetables, exquisite pastries, award winning wines and let us not forget the ice-creams! Hungry?

For those of you seeking a more tranquil and relaxing holiday, simply rest in our spacious apartment or treat yourselves to a day at a local 5 star spa centre.

Take a day trip over to Malta on the regular ferry service and wander around the baroque modern day capital Valletta, peruse the delights of colourful Marsaxlokk and it's famous Sunday market; amble through the medieval 'silent city' of Mdina for breathtaking views or unwind in one of the award winning spas on the island.

Apart from the prehistoric temples, magnificent baroque architecture, endless sunshine and blue skies, there is a wealth of sporting activities such as ....

WALKING Gozo is wonderful walking country with plenty of well trodden tracks through the more famous of the islands landmarks such as Calypso's Cave or the Azure Window but also some hidden secrets such as the beauty and peace of the Lunzjata Valley and the tiny hamlet of Ghasri.

ROCK CLIMBING For the adrenalin junkies, the Maltese Islands offer a varied and scenic playground for rock climbers of all levels. Whether you are looking to tick off some short and sweet challenges or setting out to push your limits on a multi-pitch adventure, there's a spot here to suit your style. There is a comprehensive guide in each apartment cataloguing 21 areas on all 3 islands with 1,200 + climbs.

If your idea of a good holiday is tranquility, magnificent unspoiled scenery, the best diving in the Med, superb food and the most amazingly friendly people plus a typical Mediterranean climate, then Gozo is a good choice!
