Overview

Overview

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Albunuelas

CASA MORISCA is a typical Mudejar house, lovingly restored, around an open patio, with tiled floors and exposed beams in all rooms. 20% DISCOUNT UNTIL SEPTEMBER. Thick walls with small windows and traditional shutters keep it cool and shaded in summer. Perfect for short breaks.

Just one hour to the SKIING and a season December to May make this an ideal base for mixing a couple of days on the slopes with other activities and for groups with some non-skiiers.

The house is down in the heart of the old village, enclosed in Moorish style by other properties; but its second floor terrace gives a wonderful view over the roof tops. It also looks down into the inner patio with its barbecue, flowers and a fountain.

Through the front door of Casa Morisca, a traditional lounge with arab style banquettes and fireplace with woodburning stove is on the right and to the left a modern kitchen. This leads into the open patio, which lights the dining room and a double bedroom which has a shower and wc en-suite. There is the sound of running water throughout the house from the fountain in the patio as well as a centuries old fountain in the downstairs suite, which still supplied water to the previous occupants.

On the first floor are the master bedroom with king size bed, a twin bedroom, a bathroom with full size bath and a study.

DISCOUNT 24 euros for couples using only one bedroom. DISCOUNT 100 euros per week for additional weeks. LONG or SHORT stays - add/deduct price per night [one seventh of additional week rate]. FREE SET OF WALKING GUIDES in English, with all bookings.

"The house was great. The lounge was very dark, but this meant that it was also cool during the hottest part of the day. Breakfast on the roof terrace was wonderful, with good shade and views of the mountains. The house was clean, and the only noise was the birds and the beep of the bread van when it came round in the morning.
The house is in the middle of a large village which has a number of good bars. There is a good road to the motorway and to other places to visit.
We went in the spring, but the weather was too hot to go walking, which disappointed us, as the area looked as if there would be some very good walks.
Grenada is a drive away, and the Alhambra was amazing!
The only down side is a very steep hill up to the car park, you get some good exercise each day, but carrying luggage up the hill was not easy on our departure - this is definitely not for someone with limited mobility."

Owner's Response: Walking is best at dawn.We climb up the valley first when it is cool and then return down to the village as the sun rises for a late breakfast. People with limited mobility should ask about our other house ref 6233727.

Schönes altes Haus, aber marode und schmutzig

  • 1 out of 5

Owner's Response: As we say “Casa Morisca is a Moorish house with thick walls and small windows with traditional shutters kept cool and shaded in summer”. This does make the house cool and shaded - or dark and gloomy according to your perceptions [and perhaps therefore look dirty] - but that is the way people prefer it in Andalucía – they pay 50% extra for shaded “sombra” seats at the corrida. Perhaps these visitors from North Europe would have been happier in our other house, modern, lighter and more spacious – but hotter in August. Most visitors have been content as the other comments show.
As the weather, during these first two weeks of August and the month before, was consistently above the 35 degrees day and 15 degrees night time averages with no rain at all, there is no possibility that the walls were damp, though some ground floor walls had a problem in winter.
There is a choice of coffee machines: expresso, filter, cafetierre and we use the oven’s grill when we want to toast the baguettes [delivered daily] which would not fit a toaster. There is an ongoing problem that when electricity power supply to the village is briefly cut, the clocks needs resetting and the cooker does not operate until then. For that reason this is covered in our Visitor’s Notes. [We shall now make these available in German, though these visitors did use English in booking].
We deliberately leave opened supplies of basics and find that most visitors appreciate having salt, pepper, rice, pasta, olive oil, soap and washing powder etc to hand, as they would if it were their own holiday property.
The swallows have only just this year come to visit, roosting at night above the patio. We could not contemplate getting in a hawk, cat or gun to remove them and are happy as long as they are not in the house.
All the wall and floor tiles are in good condition and were newly fitted on conversion except one floor in the living room where we retained the nineteenth century tiles, which seemed to be a match to those in Lorca’s farm house in Granada, despite some showing their age. Looking through the other comments will show that a majority of our visitors enjoyed this cozy house and felt that they were getting value for money.

ALBUÑUELAS is an old Andaluz pueblo blanco, a village of white houses, lying at 737m, at the head of the Lecrin valley, on the steep side of the Río Santo gorge, beneath the Sierra de Albuñuelas which rises to 1504m at Herrero. Verdant and well irrigated since the time of the Moors, it grows a wealth of oranges, lemons, pomegranates, avocados, mangoes and vegetables - with almonds and olives, and pines covering the higher slopes. Something is being harvested at all times of the year. Midway from the City of Granada to the coast at Salobreña, its lake Beznar is fed by the melting snows of the Sierra Nevada. Unlike the adjacent Alpujurra it remains hidden from the influences of tourism, but with Granada half an hour and the others less than an hours drive, it is an ideal centre.

Its history goes back to the beginning of the millennium when Albuñuelas was on the routes of al Idrisi, the first arab geographer, and of Leon el Africano who travelled from Timbuktu to Granada. Many of the Albuñelenses still farm the surrounding terraced campos and can be seen commuting in the mornings by mule with tools, and dogs - even a goat - and returning laden later. They may travel for an hour to get to their patch, which could be up the far side of the gorge. There are three bridges over the river Santo and an extensive network of mule tracks up the hillside and a number of unmetalled forestal tracks, which give tremendous scope for walking and mountain bikes. Caballo at 3013m stands to the east of the valley and is capped in snow until well into spring after the almond blossom has fallen.
