About this property

Renovated Downtown Lexington Apartment

We bought this 1948 home in December 2013. We renovated the downstairs apartment and rented it right away on an annual lease. Then we decided to renovate and furnish the upstairs apartment for travelers to Lexington. We thought it may work because the apartment is so centrally located in downtown Lexington, in Historic Northside Neighborhood, is pretty and has its own walled garden. In fact, it is only steps away from Jefferson Street, with lots of choices in, a brewery, restaurants and an upscale wine market.

It was SO successful that as soon as the downstairs lease was up we renovated and furnished it too. While the apartments are similar (two bedroom with queen sized beds and one bath) there are differences. Upstairs you have access to the attic, which we have not worked on yet, a screened in porch, and a slightly larger bathroom.

Downstairs is slightly larger; it has a separate dining room and access to the basement, which, while it is not special on its own, it does have a second washer and dryer.

Both have use of the front porch and lovely back garden with its table and chairs and various plantings.

Superb in Every Way
I've nothing but superlatives to say for this vacation rental. The location is perfect - in a quiet neighborhood with some great bars and restaurants nearby, and only 10-15 minutes walk from the Convention Centre. The apartment itself is a good size, spotlessly clean, well equipped and with exceptionally comfortable beds. Teri (the owner) corresponded promptly at every point from initial enquiry onwards. All these things alone would have made for a good stay, but Teri clearly wants to go that extra mile to make her guests have a great experience...and that shows in the details. For example, a fridge full of cold bottles of water and a couple of beers...just the ticket after travelling for 16 hours from the UK. A bathroom with nice toiletries. There's even a note in the apartment manual about how some money from every vacation rental is used to improve the apartment that bit further.

Happy renter
What a great apartment in a great location. We parked our car and walked everywhere during our stay. We were so pleased with the apartment when we walked in. We are hoping to visit Lexington again and will definitely try and stay at this location.

Quick visit
The property was perfect for our quick visit to see our daughter and go to Keeneland. Great location to blue heron and nice bar that was an old service station.

This great apartment in Lexington Historic district was clean, well appointed and very comfortable
We have very good friends in Lexington so we came here for a short stay. This apartment was a perfect place for us to unwind after a full day and night of socializing. Would not hesitate for a second to rent again.

About the host

Hosted by Teri Kelly

Host profile image
This vacation rental is run by two sisters. Teri lives just seven houses away in an 1890's Victorian. Delena lives in Austin, Tx, where she works as a recruiter. We were both born in Kentucky and grew up on Lexington's north side.

We, along with Teri's husband, Chris, have recently become involved in the development of the Distillery District by purchasing the abandoned James Pepper Distillery. We built Goodfella's Pizza a space in the old Boiler House, and recently completed work on the NEW James Pepper Distillery. We are currently working on an event space and another vacation rental on TOP of Goodfella's!

We became dismayed at reports that hotels are only giving their housekeepers 15-20 minutes to clean a room. This is NOT enough time! Two of us always spend at least two hours cleaning between guests. The report even showed that sheets are not always being changed between guests! Oh my! We very much want to assure anyone who rents our properties that every bed is changed between every guest...even if it appears not to have been used. Every. SIngle. Time. Exactly like we would expect when we rent from others.

Why they chose this property

The home is located in Downtown Lexington's second and largest neighborhood on beautiful West 3rd Street. The neighborhood has undergone a transformation in recent years while maintaining it's historic charm. There are many restaurants, breweries, bars and shops opening throughout.

We have a heart for historic preservation (this is our ninth renovation) downtown and this is our first short-term rental. We delight in helping visitors to our charming and comfy apartment make the most of their visit to our hometown.

What makes this property unique

The Garden: The garden is incredible. Not being talented gardeners ourselves, we feel incredibly lucky that a landscape architect rented one of the apartments for several years before we bought the house in December, 2013. He spent several thousand hours and hundreds of dollars creating an English garden of winding paths and full, lush beds. It is peaceful and a piece of paradise right downtown. All we had to do was dig it out since he had moved out and it was neglected for several years.

The Location: Certainly the biggest selling point of our property. We are located in Lexington's largest Historical neighborhood. While our block still has a ways to go, renovations are happening all the time. Guests can walk to several restaurants, bars and breweries in five minutes or less. They can walk to the heart of downtown or Rupp Arena in 20 minutes. The furnishings have been partially culled from area estate sales over the past year and partially bought new. The resulting look is a contemporary renovation, with vintage and casual furnishings. We wanted our guests to be able to cook for themselves if they wish. The kitchen was stocked with all of the basics and we and our guests have added items over the years. If guests find they need anything they are encouraged to contact Teri...she is only a few houses away with her own well-stocked kitchen.

Teri and her husband have spent a few nights there when their own home is rented, and have absolutely loved it. We are confident our guests will too!
