Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Lamoine - The Henry House

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom On 80+ Acres Close To Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park

This charming, comfortable, classic cape in Lamoine was built around 1820. It is on a beautiful piece of property with over 80 acres of land, apple trees, blueberries, rhubarb, and some of the best drinking water in the world. You will enjoy the privacy this setting provides, yet the convenience of easy access.

Exposed hand-hewn beams in the dining room and master bedroom suite, and a built-in china hutch in the dining room add timeless charm and elegance. Recent renovations provide all the updated conveniences that will make your stay comfortable and easy.

A large yard provides lots of space for barbeques, games, and just relaxing in the sun. A basketball hoop in the driveway provides more fun, and blueberry fields (blueberries ripe for picking in July/August) provide the opportunity to eat one of Maine’s well-known fruits.

The first floor has a large mudroom, a lovely, light-filled modern kitchen, a large dining room, laundry room with washer/dryer, large bathroom with tub and shower, a warm and inviting living room with gas fireplace, and a bedroom with a full size bed.

The second floor has a large master bedroom with a king bed, its own bath with shower, a gas stove, and a lovely sitting area. Across the hall is a large bedroom with two twin beds and an alcove with two wicker chairs and a bookcase full of books. Large windows in both rooms brings the outdoors in, and views of Schoodic Mountain can take your breath away. Both upstairs bedrooms have air-conditioning.

This home has lots of natural light, fields, woods, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and is often visited by turkeys, deer, raccoons, porcupines, foxes, eagles, and moose.

Luxury linens, lush towels, beach towels, a well-equipped kitchen, games, books, outdoor games (croquet, basketball, badminton), all help to make you feel cozy and well cared for.

Far enough from everything to feel secluded and close enough to everything to thrive.

About Mary and David Henry

Mary Henry was raised in Lamoine, left for many years, and returned 20 years ago to visit her parents. While visiting, she met her husband David while out for a walk around the Shore Road in Lamoine. David was the pastor of Lamoine Baptist Church for 25 years. David and Mary have two teenage children.

Mary and David Henry purchased this farmhouse in 2003

Why Mary and David Henry chose Lamoine

This lovely home has been in our family for generations. We bought the house from Mary's father, renovated it, and lived there up until 2013 when we moved closer to Bangor. We love the land, the blueberries, the town, the people, and the proximity to everything else we love. It is where our family still gathers and makes memories.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The two gas fireplaces, even in the middle of summer, offer an ambience and warmth that is always soothing and inviting. Air conditioning in the master bedroom and twin bedroom upstairs offer relief from the humidity of summer, and makes sleeping an absolute pleasure. The hand-hewn beams speak of the effort that went into building this home in the early 1800's. Our home is surrounded by woods, fields, expansive lawn, apple trees, blueberry fields and the sound of peepers, and the call of eagles flying over head.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The whole family agrees this has been our best place to stay, ever! From the minute I entered, I could tell there was a special, warm feel to this place. There were so many unexpected extras so perfect for our family. We love art and reading so your choice of paintings on the walls was delightful and shelves full of books enriching. Our 13 year old read 5 hefty volumes while we were here! The younger kids explored outside and savored apples and blueberries along the way. We put the games to good use too. I think you have everything here that makes it feel like home. I especially liked the well stocked kitchen with dishes to make the simplest foods feel special. We enjoyed our outings as much as being here too. Acadia holds childhood memories for me and we did a lot there with the kids; biked around Eagle Lake and Jordan Pond, hiked Precipice Trail, up and down Dorr Mt and than Cadillac, had lots of happy times on Bar Island and eating our way through Bar Harbor. So many great times as a family! Thank you for providing such a haven. We surely hope to come back here again! (from South Carolina)

Great for the Family

  • 5 out of 5
We spent four days here and loved it. We have two young children (ages 4 and 2) and wanted to see all of Acadia National Park but still have space for ourselves. This house was perfect to do this as Bar Harbor is about 20 minutes away and everything in Acadia National Park is close together. The house is beautifully renovated and appointed, the linen is top grade and the beds really comfortable. Our kids loved going for nature walks right outside the cottage, sitting in front of an outdoor fire with us in the evening and playing croquet in the afternoon. This house would also be great if you are traveling with grandparents or an au pair as there is a queen size bed in the bedroom downstairs so you don't need to use the stairs. Everything in this house is provided for from fresh Maine coffee to chocolate bars to take with you on your day trips. Mary and David were lovely to work with and kindly posted back to us the two toys our kids had left between the cusions on the sofa! Great location, half the price of staying on MDI and the perfect place to let the kids run around outside instead of being confined to a hotel room. The personal touches from the owners when you arrive are really nice. We will return home to Australia at the end of this year with find memories of our time in Maine and Lamoine.

Beyond all expectations

  • 5 out of 5
We could not have had a better week in Maine. The house was all it was advertised and more. The character was typical Maine, decorations and small touches were welcoming and comfortable. The location of the house put us within easy reach of Bar Harbor and all of Acadia, including Schoodic Point. We made a run up the coast to Quoddy Head which was a little more than two hours from the house. Ellsworth has everything you need. We saw a deer out the back window one morning. Just a fantastic week that was made even better by this rental. House is also just down the road from Lamoine State Park and Lamoine beach. Great spots to relax away from the crowds of Acadia. Owners went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable.

Our best experience ever with a vacation rental

  • 5 out of 5
Our family has enjoyed numerous VRBO experiences in recent years, but we all agreed this was the best one ever. The beautiful old farmhouse has so much character, and yet the owners have hit the perfect balance of adding modern conveniences without losing the historical feel. We loved the decor, including the art on the walls, and we all made use of the well stocked bookshelves that offered something for everyone.

The location feels private and secluded, but it's convenient to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We all hope to return to the Henry House in the future. Special little touches like a basket of goodies for the kids and a card welcoming each family member by name set this apart from other rentals. The owners were a pleasure to deal with, and super helpful when we had questions. We enjoyed our time so much that we extended our stay an additional day, and will plan to stay longer the next time.

We really enjoyed our stay in this quiet house located in the middle of a clearing offering nice views on the forest. The house has a history that can be felt and is also very comfortable and nicely decorated. Acadia national park is conveniently close by.

Owner's Response: We hope you will come back to hike more trails, have more picnics, and maybe even try one of Maine's other seasons. They all have something fabulous to offer. We look forward to your next visit!

Great Family Vacation

  • 5 out of 5
We spent two weeks in this charming house with our two teenage children and had a very enjoyable time. The house itself is in a lovely location and is thoughtfully equipped by attentive owners. The house was very welcoming and spotless on arrival. We really appreciated the comfy beds and well-appointed bathrooms.

We found plenty to do in the area. Acadia National Park is a gem, offering many opportunities for outdoor pursuits. We loved the free buses (provided by L .L. Bean) which solved any parking problems and got us around Mount Desert Island very easily. Boat trips to the Cranberry Islands and whale-watching were highlights of the trip. The Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Fort Knox offered an unusual day out in the very pretty town of Bucksport. The nearby town of Ellsworth (5 miles) had all amenities and restaurants - very convenient. Nearby Bar Harbor is a busy town with plenty of night life and souvenir-shopping opportunities. We had perfect summer weather but would love to return in another season.

We would recommend this house as a comfortable base from which to explore this beautiful area.

Owner's Response: All of you managed to do so much while you were here! We hope you come back another season to take a hike up the Bee Hive to enjoy the Fall colors, or get in some snow shoeing or cross-country skiing during the winter months. Maine is beautiful in all seasons. Hope to see you in one of them soon.

Charm, comfort, and nature - - the quintessential Maine coastal experience

  • 5 out of 5
This nearly two century home with its exposed hand-hewn beams and gas fireplaces provided us with a perfect respite from the big city intensity. We saw eagles and a half-dozen deer stroll through the back yard just before dusk. It was awesome!
And if you are looking for the beach, you are minutes away from both Lamoine and Marlboro Beaches. And just across the bay you can explore beautiful and quaint Bar Harbor with its restaurants, shops and bars, and the beautiful Acadia National Park with its trails, beaches, and crashing surf.
If you are looking for a cottage and surroundings that give you the quintessential coastal Maine experience, this is it!

Star gazing, that is what you will do every night at this home in Lamoine. The night sky gives a breath-taking view of The Milky Way, Big and Little Dippers, and the millions of other stars that adorn the skies. Blueberries can be picked in late July and August, and fresh rhubarb can be picked May through June.

This home is situated on a beautiful piece of property located just 4 miles from Lamoine State Park, 5 miles from Lamoine Beach, 3 miles from Blunt’s Pond (fresh water swimming hole), 6 miles from Ellsworth, 2 miles from the Bar Harbor Golf Course (Trenton), 17 miles from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, and just 45 minutes from Bangor International Airport, Bangor Waterfront Concerts and the new Cross Insurance Center entertainment arena.

When exploring Acadia National Park don't overlook Schoodic Point where the waves crash with thunderous sounds and the ocean spray leaves salt on your face. Schoodic Mountain is rated as a difficult climb and offers a 360 degree view of the Acadia Region.

Going to Lamoine Beach or Lamoine State Park is a great Maine experience. When you think of Maine, lobster boats, islands and mountains, this is the place that highlights all you think of as being Maine. Both offer beautiful views of Bar Harbor, the Porcupine Islands, Cadillac Mountain and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Picnic tables and grills make it a great place to eat a meal or two.

Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are all close by and offer some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Afternoon tea at the Bar Harbor Inn, and evening coffee and dessert at the Blue Nose Inn are a must do. There are many activities for every age from walking Sand Beach to taking a sail on the four-masted schooner The Margaret Todd.

Just the peace and quiet will renew your spirit, so bring a good book, or read one of ours, play a game or take a nap.
