Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Wainiha - Cook Hale

3br/2ba home on large lot, 600ft to beach, bordering preserve, close to tunnels

Welcome to Cook Hale, your tranquil escape to Ha'ena on the north shore of Kauai. Ha'ena is home to some of the best beaches and most beautiful scenery in the world. Cook Hale is conveniently located near tunnels and across the street from a footpath that leads 200 meters to a beautiful sandy beach. Come back from the beach and relax on the huge lanai facing the preserve while listening to the birds singing!

New to the rental market, Cook Hale has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, dining, and living room all on the second level. The open floor plan, opening onto the lanai, all facing the wooded preserve and mountains, takes full advantage of the property's setting. This private retreat is tucked away on a 12,000+ sf lot, and has covered parking for two cars underneath. There is also laundry, storage, and barbeque on the ground level.

Tunnels beach is 1/2 mile away. Tunnels is known to have world class snorkeling when it's calm, and world class surfing when it's not! Mediterranean Gourmet is even closer with great food and entertainment. The Napali coast is less than two miles away with incredible hiking and waterfalls. Several dining, shopping, and entertainment options are also available in historic Hanalei, just about 6 miles away.

Comfortable house, serene setting, walk to beach, close to creature comforts and outdoor adventures alike; this house is sure to please!

Why Todd chose Wainiha

Ha'ena is truly a tropical paradise, with everything you need within a short walk or drive. I love having the feeling of seclusion the home has, facing the preserve, but not having to walk down Kuhio Hwy to get to the beach, because of the proximity to the path.

Relaxing

  • 5 out of 5
We loved our stay here! The house is older and has a funky seventies vibe that reminds me of cabins we've rented in Tahoe. It is in a quiet residential area, about a half mile from the end of the road. Before arriving, I was a bit scared by the review that compared the house to a fishing cabin, but we found the house to be very comfortable and nicer than any fishing cabin I've been to.

We were two couples, a toddler and a baby and the house was just the right amount of space for us. The room with the king size bed is the one adjacent to the living room (you can see it in the pictures; it has an accordion wall), which was not an issue for us but is good to know when planning. It does not have air conditioning, but we found the fans to be sufficient cooling with temperatures in the mid-80s (and we're used to a very moderate climate). The other two bedrooms have air conditioning, but face the street. I didn't personally sleep in them but those who did said that they weren't bothered by any noise. All of us thought the beds were comfortable. As other reviewers have stated, the covered lanai is the jewel of this property. Plenty of space for all six of us to have our morning coffee, do a little yoga, or relax in the hammock and watch birds, horses and even a cow roaming by in the preserve. We were especially grateful for this feature as a storm hit during our stay and we spent a couple of days mostly lazing about the house. Also, we are avid cooks and appreciated the well stocked kitchen (appliances, etc.; don't expect food) and bbq.

We enjoyed being "away from it all" and still being able to walk to the beach. The path is unmarked and it took us a while to find it (look for the fire hydrant across the street) but it's only about 5 minutes to the beach. The beach isn't suitable for swimming but it was great for splashing our toddler's feet, morning and evening walks and watching the sunset. You can swim (check the conditions first) at Tunnels and Ke'e, which are a short bike ride (or drive) from the house. I was also able to walk to a nearby day spa and got a great massage there. Hanalei is about a 10-15 minute drive and has grocery stores, casual restaurants and a great farmer's market on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

We are looking forward to visiting again!

Much better than tourist condos

  • 4 out of 5
The pros are the lanai which is exactly as pictured, the large open floor plan, location off the beaten path for tourists, and the close proximity of Tunnels, Ke'e and Hanalei beaches. The wife and I spent blissful hours sitting on the lanai relaxing in the chairs or large hammock. Kitchen is adequately equipped but you will need to stop at the WalMart or one of the two large grocery stores in Lihue to stock up on food on your way from the airport. There is a large selection of good quality beach equipment as well as 4 newish bicycles. Also a washer & dryer downstairs. The kayak in the pictures wasn't there while we were which was a bit disappointing. I left a surf rod there for fishing but you'll need to get some more tackle. (The food store in Princeville sells frozen squid for bait.) The large king-size bed is comfortable and the owner, Todd, was easy to deal with.
The cons are that the property is an older one and needs some maintenance and updating. (nothing terrible or vacation threatening. Think of your Uncle Joe's fishing cabin). The window unit air conditioning is only in the the 2 small bedrooms, not the room with the king bed. The inside temperature in late August was in the mid-80's by evening and, with the humidity, we really would have appreciated some air even though we're Texans and used to heat. The closest beach off the footpath has a lava shelf at the water line making it pretty useless for swimming or fishing although it's nice for laying out. Tunnels is a quarter mile or so down the beach to the west and has great snorkeling. Lastly, if you do want to do the tourist thing, you'll spend a lot of time in your car. 2.5 hours around the island to Waimea Canyon, 1 to 1.25 hours to Kapaa depending on the time of day and then another 15-20 minutes to Lihue. The property entrance does have the house numbers near the gate but you can't see them at midnight in the rain. Look for the 2 purplish reflectors and don't trust your GPS as it put us a mile or two down the road from the actual address.
There are some newer properties in this price range but I wouldn't hesitate to book here again. The lanai makes it all worthwhile!

an ideal quiet retreat located close to the best beaches and trails on the north shore of kauai

  • 5 out of 5
my wife and I stayed at Hale Cook for 4 nights in early August of 2014. The place is great. it has a ski house-like architecture with high peaked ceilings and wood paneled walls. not luxury but well-designed and homey. very open layout: kitchen, dining area, living room and huge deck - all in the same area, which is ideal. it is nice to have your own free standing house with a yard instead of a condo with neighbors coming and going and making noise.
we were looking for a quiet, peaceful retreat on the north shore and that is what Hale Cook is. located in the middle of haena, feels very far from the manicured country club that is princeville and is far less busy than hanalei. all of the one lane bridges between haena and hanalei do a good job of making haena have an off-the-beaten-track and local feel. we really enjoyed being only a short stroll (maybe 3 min but we stopped to eat guava along the way so might be 2 min) to the beach and being able to ride the bikes a few minutes (4 bikes at the house use) to tunnels beach (best snorkeling on Kauai) and the start of the kalaulau trail.

my wife and I particularly enjoyed sitting on the large deck facing the preserve and watching the breeze rustle through the trees and the giant palm tree and just relaxing. i just wish the apple bananas on apple banana tree on the property happened to be ripe during our visit - but we got plenty at the local farmers markets in haena and hanalei.

the owner, Todd was a pleasure to deal with.
