|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
A unique, fully-staffed detached villa in a stunning location 5 kms from Echo Beach. This architect-designed holiday home of an English professor and writer combines traditional Asian and modern Western elements. The spacious accommodation comprises three stylish bedroom suites (one in a self-contained guest house), large reception, office and an attic/TV room. The villa contains a wealth of Buddhist and Balinese artefacts and antiques. The veranda with dining table and day bed, overlooks secluded pool and spectacular tropical gardens. The garden extends to the river and contains 2 pavilions with cushions or sofa. There are water features, stone carvings and shrines, and an infinity pool (10 X 4 metres) surrounded by palms, giant ferns, orchids and bougainvillea. In an unspoilt village location with local temples, the villa is only 15 mins from Canggu beach, and 25 mins from the smart restaurants and shops of Seminyak.
***NEW FOR 2013 - Villa Tukad has been extended with our new villa 'Dua' next door. We can now accommodate ten guests for weddings, family get togethers etc. If Villa Tukad is already booked when you want to come to Bali, please contact us for availability at Dua - further details, rates and pictures will be posted to this site soon.
Satisfied customers: Villa Tukad has been running for seven years now, in which time we have received nothing but praise for the facilities, the gardens, the atmosphere and especially the staff. The full-time cook keeps improving and her reportoire of Western and Asian dishes and the quality of her cooking means guests rarely go out to eat.
See reviews for guest comments are available on request.
Our guests mainly come from England, France, Germany, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia - the staff speak some English, and manage to communicate with guests from most countries.
A two-centred holiday: Visitors to Bali who would like to see more of the island might like to consider combining a stay at this villa with our other property in Bedugul. As well as golf, there are other outdoor pursuits in Bedugul to take advantage of the cool, fresh air. Boating, trekking, fishing etc.
The two properties are very different and although they are only one hour's drive apart, the climate in Bedugul is much cooler.
If you are interested in golf, then the two villas combine to give you close access to two of the most picturesque golf courses in Asia. The Nirwana (managed by Le Meridien) is at Tanah Lot. The Pancasari Country Club is a spectacular course in the crater of a volcano adjacent to property no 85226.
We will arrange transfers between the two properties, food and provisions to take to Bedugul and the villa manager will look after all your needs in both properties.
Please note that Villa Tukad, Villa Dua and the Bedugul property are NON-PROFIT MAKING ventures. All rental proceeds go to the staff, the village, and local suppliers.

Villa Tukad is far enough from the bustle of Bali's tourist resorts to provide a real experience of life in a Balinese village. Although the property is in a village, it is very secluded with high walls containing the fabulous gardens. It has all the luxuries and much more space than most holiday villas, and these are the reasons we chose it as an eventual retirement home. The property comes with the best staff you could hope for, and they have been with us for eight years now. There are still plenty of restaurants, shops and sites within a short drive, so for us it is in the perfect position, secluded, connected with 'real' Bali, but not too far from tourist Bali when we want to a night out or some retail therapy.
Guests and friends who have stayed at Villa Tukad remind us how special the place is. Unlike the sometimes soulless and ubiquitous 'luxury tropical villas' all over Asia, this was built with love and care, not to a price. Villa Tukad affects people and many keep coming back. One guest from Australia has been 5 times now, and says he is addicted to the charm and the atmosphere of the place. Another unique benefit is our star cook Desak, who is able to conjure western and Asian dishes with consummate ease. Our French guests rarely eat anywhere else. The other staff are also loyal, charming and utterly trustworthy.
We arrived in April and my immediate thoughts when I saw the villa, were that I had not booked enough time there, we had only booked 5 nights and as the villa is so spectacular I would have liked more time. The gardens are fabulous and the rural location is very peaceful. The villa itself is very well suited to our needs, lots of areas to just relax and laze about. The pool is great and deeper than it looks, very refreshing. All the rooms were large and well maintained. The staff at the villa were all fabulous, korman cooked nice breakfast in the morning, Katut keeps the gardens clean, and Nopi keeps an eye out at night. Desak the cook, cooks the most wonderful meals using local produce. We just let Desak surprise us with our meals, and they were all scrumptious, but there is a menu to choose from too. Eating in the villa was very cost effective, and is restaurant quality, if not better!
The trip to Seminyak was not too long being 35 mins , and Ubud in about an hour. Our driver Roy was fantastic, very cheerful and chatty and always punctual. My bali experience at Villa Tukad has been very memorable and we will definitely be visiting again, for longer next time :)
We had a fantastic stay at the Villa Tukad, the house and the garden were excellent.
What makes this villa really special are the staff, from Budi picking you up from the airport, Koman making breakfast and the wonderful Desak making lunch and dinner.
This is all done at cost, you agree what you'd like to eat, give Desak some funds she keeps an account book with all the receipts, she then buys and cooks the food as little or as much as you want.
My partner is Indonesian and thought the food was so good we took some home (specially prepared by Desak)
This is the best kept secret of the villa!
The villa is in a rural location and we did debated if we should stay in a similar location to where we have in the past or to try somewhere new. We were so pleased that we did, it was so peaceful and a taxi only costs £5 (60000 IRP) to Seminyak and the night life but you can leave it all behind and come back to the peace and quiet of the villa.
We very much liked that the villa is in a village and is in keeping with the other houses. It fits in and doesn't stand out like some of the other villas you'll see being built elsewhere in Bali.
We were also able to hold a birthday party for my 45th with some of our friend who live here and some who visiting. My partner along with Kiki the villa manager arranged food and drinks and extra staff and Kiki also bought a wonderful flower arrangement as a gift from the villa staff
The owner Paul was very helpful throughout our email communications and replies very quickly.
If you stay at the Villa Tukad you will have a great time, highly recommended.

Dear Mr. Paul,
how time is flying by! It was on August 11th that we left Villa Tukad in
the early morning and now already 2 1/2 weeks have passed since. But we
don't wish to have left without having thanked you for the great
opportunity to rent your house. This really is a "treasure" you have
installed: the good taste for style concerning architecture and
furniture, the generous space, the refreshing garden, the vicinity of
traditional villages and ricefields.
Another very enriching aspect of our stay in Villa Tukad has been the
chance to meet the people of Bali, especially ones of such exquisit
character as the ones employed at the Villa.
Having met them every day, we felt deep communication and understanding.
It has been a pleasure to speak to them, as they gave us insights into
the Balinese mentality, life and thinking. This has been utterly moving
and interesting. With this experience we really got the feeling of being
in Bali. We are certain that after this stay we will never settle for a
hotel anymore in Bali, and coming back to Bali, Villa Tukad will
definitively be our first choice.
We had a great time, thank you very much for everything. Please give
our best wishes to Kiki, Desak and the other associates

As said in many of the previous reviews, the photos of this villa don't do it and it's beautiful gardens justice. It truly is a little piece of paradise.
We recently spent ten days here - myself and my husband (50s), son, daughter and boyfriend (all 20s) and all fell in love with the place.
It is not the place to come if you wish to spend a lot of time in the hustle and bustle of Kuta (yuck) but apart from that, it is perfect. We had a few day trips into Kuta (Waterbom Park etc). The journey is not abysmal but slightly tedious - wouldn't want to be doing it every day. However, the younger members of our party hired scooters at a very cheap price and had a ball coming and going on them. Taxis to take us to nearby Echo Beach were very cheap and even hiring Budi for the whole day is exceptional value compared to western standards. We found Budi very pleasant - a quiet fellow but knowlegdable when necessary - friendly but not 'in your face'.
The property itself was looked after magnificently by Koman, Desak and the unobtrusive gentlemen who were occasionally to be seen around the garden. Koman was always there early to cook breakfast for us and clean the villa (heaven), Desak did our shopping daily, getting anything that was required for lunch, dinner or the next day's breakfast. She then went on to cook us magnificent meals, with nothing being too much trouble - her spring rolls are to die for, by the way. Kiki checked in regularly to see that everything was going well. When little things popped up, she attended to them immediately and very efficiently and again nothing was too much trouble. She even offered to buy me some jewellery and post it to Australia when I admired some of hers on the last day. She wouldn't take any money upfront as she didn't know exactly how much the postage would be. I found this quite amazing but quite lovely - it just wouldn't happen in our neck of the woods where no-one trusts anyone else anymore.
I found the owner, Paul, very easy and pleasant to deal with. We exchanged several emails prior to our trip and he was exceptionally helpful in answering my little questions and offerring advice.
My husband and I spent a fair bit of time relaxing around the villa and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience. The gardens are spectacular and so tranquil - you hear a bit of the day-to-day village life going on around you but it's still very peaceful.
Would definitely recommend this property.
We spent 2 fantastic weeks in Bali in August, with 9 nights of our trip spent in Villa Tukad and the 4 nights in Paul’s property in Bedugal. It was the most wonderful holiday to date and we could not recommend it enough.
Villa Tukad is a beautiful property with everything you could ask for- swimming pool, superbly maintained gardens, veranda’s and air conditioning (very useful in this climate!) The interior is impeccably decorated and gardens are landscaped featuring ponds and statues.
As for the staff, you will rarely meet such lovely people! The food is delicious and freshly made by Desak and Koman who will go out of their way to source the best produce and cook to perfection. Speak to Desak about the best local beaches and they can show you some really stunning hidden gems. Security on site is flawless and the place is always clean.
There is plenty to do around Bali and nowhere is too far or too much hassle to sort out. Kiki very kindly booked a trekking tour to Mt. Batur at sunrise for us one night and we really enjoyed it. It’s an easy enough trek for any moderately fit person and the scenery is breathtaking as you wait for your egg to boil in the hot pools. We walked on the sea bed floor and rode elephants, both unforgettable experiences. Relaxation is guaranteed in Tukad, with talented masseurs available at affordable prices.
In summary, this property is wonderful and is really worth visiting!
Villa Tukad is a beautiful home. The photos do not do the place justice and besides, so much of what is great about the villa is not what you see but what you hear, smell and feel on your skin. Every morning we’d get up and leave the air-conditioned bedroom, stepping through warm, humid air and into the living room where the tall glass doors were wide open and you could hear the sounds of the beautiful garden, feel the breeze on your skin and smell Komang’s pancakes cooking. We loved it.
The property is clean and well-maintained by the army of wonderful staff. I cannot put too much emphasis on how great they are. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is done with a smile. Desak's dinners were the highlight of the day - her Mie Goreng is simply to die for. Every morning, we got up to Koman's delicious pancakes, toast with the creamiest butter I have ever tasted, tea, fruit platters and Jungle Juice - some seriously good orange juice. We didn't see Kiki very much, but that was our fault for sleeping in every day! Nevertheless, she gave us ideas for what to do, called our takeaway orders in for us on Desak's nights off and sorted out a surprise birthday cake for my fiancée. There are a few guys around the villa too: Pak Novi, Ketut and another chap whose name escapes me. All are very friendly, but very discreet in carrying out their duties, often accompanied by Dinah the dog, with her poor half-tail, who was always around for whatever attention you could spare! We would recommend Budi, the quiet, polite driver, for all your trips in his air-conditioned people carrier. Finally, Paul, the owner, is excellent to deal with: he answered all our questions in detail and was always pleasant to talk to.
Truthfully, we didn't get out and see Bali that much because we concentrated on relaxing – not too difficult in Villa Tukad! Our days were mostly spent sleeping late, reading and playing cards by the pool, then watching movies in the attic room after it got dark at around 6:30pm.
I would recommend this property to anyone wanting a great chill out holiday. Easily within an hour’s drive of Semiyak and Kuta and just over an hour to Ubud, it’s near enough to the main tourist spots for you to get your fill but far enough away from the hustle and bustle for you to really unwind. We definitely recommend the massages on the veranda - a reasonable $13 for an hour's massage!
Learn "terima kasih", the Indonesian phrase for "thank you" because you will need it!
Villa Tukad is close to local beaches and a short drive from the bars, restaurants and shops of Seminyak. The villa is secluded with complete privacy and security. The veranda looks out over fabulous terraced tropical gardens dropping down to a river in a deep valley skirted by tall, exotic trees. The staff can do your food shopping at nearby bakeries, local markets and western supermarkets. Echo Beach has cafe/restaurant and bar open all day, and seafood barbecue. Temples in the village have traditional music and ceremonies. Bicycles are available for riding to the beach and through the rice terraces, etc. There is a golf, spa resort and sports club at Tanah Lot (15 min), and Ubud, the major cultural centre of Bali is 45 min by car across countryside.
NB: Combine a rental with our cabin in the mountains overlooking Lake Bratan.
