For those who like to participate in the salmon fishing run in late summer and fall, you can enjoy staying at the mouth of the Salmon River, in the Selkirk lighthouse itself, located right in the middle of the action, at the Salmon River Marina. Lake Ontario is at your doorstep, where you can see the commercial fishing charters leaving for the deep water of the lake in summer, and in the fall, fishing boats trolling for salmon close in along the lakeshore. In the river, right in front of you in September and early October, you can see salmon surfacing as they run up the river. Some days are windy, some are calm, many are sunny and some are brisk, but stay at the lighthouse marina and you will immensely enjoy the entire experience. In May and June, the action shifts to Brown Trout and Smallmouth Bass later in June. No matter what the month, or the mix of weather, the fishing is always great, and you will love being on the river, near the lake and sandy beach, enjoying the many faces and ever-changing moods of the lake. The lighthouse is being renovated in a warm, comfortable style that will also allow you to experience the rustic character and historic nature of the lighthouse structure. The large living room features a brick fireplace, and the kitchen is fully equipped. There is one bedroom downstairs and 2 upstairs. The 3 bedrooms will sleep as many as 6 total, with 3 double beds. River dockage is available if you have a boat of your own, with launch facilities at the Lighthouse Marina. Or you can reserve a rowboat from the Marina during the time of your stay. But you don't need to be a fisherman to enjoy the upcoming fall experience at the mouth of the Salmon River. The beach and river is beautiful in the spring and fall, and a romantic spot for couples to enjoy while watching all that is happening at the river then. But if you are a family ready to enjoy a fishing vacation, or a group of friends ready for a very special fishing vacation, what better place to stay - right in the middle of the action....
The 'brothers-in-law' Mike & Abe welcome you to join us, as our family has been enjoying the Salmon River Point since the 1930s, and we now have many family members and close family friends who own summer homes on the Point and further up the river along Pine Grove Road. Having grown up at the lake, enjoying the fishing, water sports, restful days in the sun and sand, marveling at the way the wind, waves and lake storms can entertain you, with rainy days spent working a jigsaw puzzle or reading a novel while enjoying views of the lake being some of our most memorable times. Or getting to stay up late roasting marshmallows over a beach fire, followed the next morning by a pancake breakfast after returning from fishing with our parents. Smallmouth bass and yellow perch fishing used to be the focus of our angling efforts, and those catches are arguably still the best tasting. But in the 1970s, the Salmon fishery developed and since then, Brown Trout can be caught in abundance along the lake shore as the water warms in May and June. The fishing charters run all summer long out to the deep waters of the lake, many departing directly from the Salmon River Marina right across the river. In the fall, the fishing gets especially active in the river, as the salmon migrate to run upstream. Year after year, our families and friends have enjoyed this special place and all that it has to offer. This year, we purchased and took on responsibility for restoring the Selkirk Lighthouse, a historic treasure that was built before any of us were born. With renovations starting this year, we will now be sharing this incredible place with others who can appreciate the special nature of the lighthouse and what it is to experience staying there. It is our hope that our guests will return time and time again, with family and friends, year after year.

The Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it stands as it has for 175 years at the mouth of the Salmon River, shining its light out across the lake every night. Across the river from the lighthouse is a beautiful sandy NY State Park property beach, bounded to the north by the pier guarding the entrance to the harbor. It was the construction of the pier years ago that initiated the creation of what is now an incredibly beautiful, sandy beach area (very unusual along Lake Ontario), right in front of the NY state park and two beach houses that we own there contiguous to the park property. The sand extends from the beach well into the lake. That makes the shore perfect for beach walking and swimming, with no undertow in calm waters, and of course, in fresh water there is no salt or sharks, jellyfish, seaweed or similar saltwater negatives. Facing west, you can enjoy refreshing breezes off of the lake during the day and offshore breezes at night. The lake can entertain young and old alike as it roars on windy days, making it seem like you are on the ocean (but for the lack of saltwater), and with a blazing, stunning sunset over the water very likely to end your day. Retired and looking to come north a little earlier than usual in the spring, or looking to stay a little later in fall before heading south? Or maybe looking for a romantic time away from the kids, in a very special place? Or looking for a special place to take youngsters (grandchildren?) for an off-season river harbor & beach experience? The lighthouse is charming & romantic, providing a wonderful getaway for adults who want to enjoy some quiet, tranquil time connecting to the natural surroundings. And for fall fishermen who want to maximize their enjoyment of the lake and river, even when they are not out on the water, there is no better place. What could be better than grilling your fresh daily catch and enjoying a patio dinner at the Salmon River Lighthouse?
In addition to the perfect harbor location, with beautiful sunset views, the lighthouse is equipped with Cable HD TV and wireless high speed internet, so you can stay connected to the outside world, as much as you need to or want to....
The Selkirk (Salmon River) Lighthouse was built in 1838, has been an iconic landmark at the Salmon River for over 175 years, and has operated as a Coast Guard Type II aid to navigation since 1987. It is unique in its construction in several ways, and is being restored this Spring, to be ready for guest occupancy starting June 20 (2014). The renovation of the structure is intended to give guests a very comfortable stay, while also allowing for appreciation for the history and the rustic nature of the lighthouse structure itself. Also, there is perhaps no better sandy beachfront location on all of Lake Ontario as exists directly across the Salmon River, with views of that beach and the lake directly west, where gorgeous sunsets can be experienced, different every day of the year. Throughout the year, fishing charters leave from the marina directly in front of the lighthouse. Brown Trout fishing is best in Spring, with Smallmouth Bass and Perch fishing in Summer, Chinook and Coho salmon fishing all through Summer and Autumn, culminating in the dramatic September & October Salmon and Steelhead run up the Salmon River. There is no more exciting place anywhere for those who love fresh water sport fishing, perfect for families and friends that desire memorable time together on the water. If you have your own boat, you can launch and dock your boat at the marina during your stay at the lighthouse. And if you don't have a boat, you can rent a rowboat for fishing or for access to the lake and beach across the river, or book a charter for a morning, afternoon, or all day! And you can enjoy all that while staying in a truly historic lighthouse, at the very mouth of the Salmon River. Taking advantage of the beach in the early season (May & June) is tremendous, as often you will share the beach with only seagulls and other shorebirds. The beach is all sand, in the water and out, directly across the river. In Late Spring and in Autumn, as ducks and geese trade up the Lake and the air chills, the lighthouse is a perfect place for a fishing party to stay, returning to comfort after a day on the lake or river. Or, for those who don't like to fish, but love to view the action at the marina and on the river, the lighthouse is the perfect place from which to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, watching the fishing charters come and go from the harbor. Day trips to Sackets Harbor, the Thousand Islands, Kingston, Syracuse, Old Forge, the Salmon River Hatchery and other surrounding sites are all fun activities when looking for fun other than on the beach and the water. And if you are looking for a romantic time away from it all, what could be better than transporting yourself back in time to another era, enjoying in a very personal way a monument to the maritime history of the Great Lakes. A stay at the Selkirk Lighthouse is something that you will remember forever....
