Our cottage is tucked into the forest in a small community with about 20 other cottages. It's a three-story 'A' frame with a balcony, bathroom with tub/shower, kitchen, two living rooms, two fireplaces and two bedrooms. Hiking, skiing nearby, relaxing place to hang out.
The ground floor is all newly refinished with lots of wood, tile and rustic interior. It has a kitchen, bathroom and living area with a wood-burning fireplace and is decorated with antiques from the region. There are two large wooden doors that cover a smaller door and large window. You can close the outer doors for extra warmth and privacy as needed.
The second floor has a small office area, a living room with a fireplace, WC with toilet and a balcony. There is also a door that leads out to the back of the cottage (it's built into a hill).
Ladder-style staircases connect all three floors. The third floor has a landing with a rack for hanging up clothes and two private bedrooms with locking doors. The larger bedroom has three single beds lining the walls and a chest of drawers (great for kids).
The smaller bedroom has a double bed and night stands (great for a couple). It also has a ceiling fan.
When you step outside, you're right in the forest. You can walk across the street and hike for miles in any direction. There is a spring about 100 meters from the cottage which has clean, cold water that tastes great. We fill several bottles every day and use it as drinking water.
If you've had enough relaxation in the forest, Trencin is just 5km away and has a lot to see and do including a medieval castle, downtown shopping, bars, restaurants, cafes, museums. There is also a lot to do in surrounding cities and villages. There is a fish farm that sells live fish. During summer months the grill is open and fresh fish, sides, beer and other items can be purchased and eaten at picnic tables next to the fish ponds.
I live in Texas with my wife and three kids. We enjoy visiting our cottage in the summer and using it as a home base for visiting other countries in Europe.
I first lived in the region in 1990 when it was Czechoslovakia and the Eastern Bloc had just opened up. I was there teaching English to doctors and fell in love with the people and the country. We have a lot of friends in the area and decided to buy a vacation getaway to use when visiting and to rent out to others.
At our cottage, you can get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some peace and quiet. If you decide you want to explore the history of the region, it's all around you. And you can be in major cities like Bratislava, Vienna, Budapest or Krakow within a couple of hours. Trencin and other surrounding towns have plenty to offer in the way of restaurants, bars, museums and activities to keep you happy.
The cottage is located in a small village with about 20 other weekend cottages. The town of Trencin is only 5 kilometers away and has a lot of attractions including the medieval castle, museum of local history, quaint downtown square with cobblestone streets, shops, antique stores, books stores, cinemas, sports arenas (local soccer and hockey team), large public swimming pool, two shopping malls and 'big box' shopping on the out skirts of town. There are a lot of events throughout the year including folk festivals, Christmas markets, art markets, film festivals, knight tournaments and more. A thousand-year old monastery built into a cave is just across the river. If you like beer, you can get some of the best beer in the world for very cheap. No joke...it's like 50 cents per half-liter bottle in the store and about a Euro in a local bar. There is also good local wine produced in the region.
