Our 1200 square foot, Log Cabin is nestled 9100 feet high in the Sangre De Christo Mountain range in the south-eastern part of Colorado. It is between Walsenburg and Alamosa on Highway 160, 90 miles north of Taos New Mexico. Many of our renters come from Texas, as this is the closest you can get to Texas and be in the mountains. About a ten hour drive from Dallas. 4-WHEEL DRIVE IS NEEDED FOR WINTER & SPRING ACCESS!!
Forbes Park is a private, gated neighborhood with only 200 homes on 13,000 acres. There is no hunting in the park, so you will find lots of deer, elk, turkey, bears, coyote, beaver, and smaller critters all over. You will have beautiful views of 11,000 foot to 14,000 foot mountains nearby with amazing sunsets.
The cabin has a comfy queen bed downstairs, and a luxurious king bed in the upstairs loft, as well as a full-size and double-size futon. The log-style furniture is of Aspen and Pine. The spacious kitchen is fully stocked (even with spices, condiments, and extra food!), with gas stove/oven, large refrigerator, microwave, as well as a washer and dryer. Outside, you will enjoy the hot tub on the front porch or beautiful sunsets on the large back deck! In wintertime the woodburning stove keeps the cabin warm while you can watch the Satellite TV or any of over 100 movies!
The park has lots of wildlife, and hiking. There is nearby fishing and hunting. Visit the Sand Dunes National Park, the picturesque towns of LaVeta and Cuchara, Taos, New Mexico, or explore further to historic mining towns such as Creed! Great snow skiing is 90 miles away in Taos (Red River) or 2 hours to Wolf Creek. Or stay in the park for cross-country skiing and sledding.
This is a great get-away for a long weekend or a week or more. Please see our rates below. Contact Kevin or Susan for more details.

My husband and I stayed in this lovely cabin for several days as part of our annual Colorado vacation. The cabin was perfect and fully met all of our expectations. It is located in a gated community as stated, and it was everything we were looking for. If you don't mind driving several miles back dirt roads (which are well-maintained), and if you want to see a lot of wildlife, then this is the cabin for you! We bought supplies at a grocery store in Pueblo and made most of our meals in the cabin.
While there, we enjoyed a drive along the Highway of Legends, CO Highway 12, from La Veta to Trinidad which was absolutely beautiful, especially in September! We also took another day to drive to Antonito and catch a ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. We actually made our reservations beforehand and decided to ride their bus from Antonito to Chama, NM, and then ride the train back to Antonito. We highly recommend this train ride... it was amazing and spectacular!
This is a great getaway place for those seeking privacy, seclusion and beauty! There are enough nearby interesting places to check out if you want, but it is also a great place to just sit back, kick your feet up and relax!
The property was as advertised, the pictures were accurate and we felt at home as soon as we arrived. The beauty of the surrounding area is awesome and we really enjoy Forbes Park. We found the cabin clean and well stocked, We would highly recommend to friends and relatives.
We traveled to Spanish Peaks and hiked most of the way to the top, also traveled to St Elmos ghost town and rode 4wheelers.
Our only regret is not spending more time just sitting and doing nothing.
Beautiful property in the middle of no where. If what you're wanting is a peaceful escape, I can't think of anything better. Its about 10 miles up a dirt road between two tiny mountain towns. The cabin was clean and well stocked with the essentials. Can't beat the price!
The groundskeeper also called us to make sure everything was okay and to check up on us when the weather got bad. That was greatly appreciated!
I can't wait to come back here! Highly recommended.
This is a great cabin to rent if you want a place with peace, quiet, and tranquility. Imagine a place where you can go and not have a neighbor nearby for about a mile or so. Imagine a place where you can sit on a deck and enjoy the trees looming high above you and see a small bird of many colors that you must identify so you go in the cabin and find the book on birds provided so you can look it up. Imagine a place where the only sounds you hear are the wind blowing in the trees and the animals making their noises. Imagine all of this in a well equipped cabin with everything you need to have a wonderful time. This cabin is well equipped with all of the necessities of life but much more. If you want to watch television, there is satellite dish tv. If you want movies, there is a huge collection of them to show on a DVD player. If you just want to relax and play cards, as we did each night, there is a comfortable table near the kitchen just right for that.
The house is well equipped and just right for visitors. It is in a gated community with gravel roads but once you get used to driving over them it is not hard to leave and explore the region and see what is outside the gate. We drove down to LaVeta and Cuchara and had a picnic by a lake one day. Another day we drove over to Westcliffe and over the pass to Rye and back to Colorado City before returning to Walsenburg. Another day we drove west to Alamosa, had coffee at a neat little coffee shop on Main Street and stocked up on some supplies before eating Mexican food. Each day we returned to our place of solitude and quiet and enjoyed the evening together.
We would highly recommend this house to those who want a place to enjoy and also one to use as home base to explore the region.
Woodsy, low-key cabin in huge, gated community near Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway (fabulous rock formations!).
We booked this on a last-minute basis for Thanksgiving because we hadn't ever explored this part of Colorado. There was a moment of trepidation hoping the gate key would arrive in the mail before we left, but of course it did. Owner Kevin was very generous and accommodating. He doesn't nickel-dime you with fees, and even waived his holiday surcharge for us.
The cabin itself has a very cool loft area with king bed and sitting area, but the balusters holding up the railing are pretty far apart, so hold on to tiny kids. Lots of knick-knacks for unruly kids or dogs to disturb. Stairs to loft could be an issue for unfit people (and old dogs like ours). The living area has TV, stereo, hundreds of DVDs and tapes, games and books. Lots to do. There is ample wood for the charming woodstove, which is the primary heating method for the living space. Electric heaters are available but we didn't need them for extra heat (though you'll need to comply with directions to prevent frozen pipes when leaving the cabin).
Cute kitchen has small oven, gas stove, microwave, refrig, coffee -- no dishwasher, but LOTS of food and supplies in the pantry. You needn't bring anything but food. We grilled on the big back deck using charcoal we found there, and left lighter fluid. The water is well water, which is excellent, and shower is blissfully hot. Didn't try the hot tub, but it was working. There's a phone and cable; our cell phones didn't work.
We saw very few residents -- maybe 4 cars -- so it appears to be mostly 2nd homes. No homes within sight of the cabin. Night is pitch black here, and the moon and stars are extra bright. Saw rabbits, deer and a coyote on our evening walks. It's fairly remote, so bring what you need and hunker down for a quiet respite from city life.
We stayed here in May 2012. This was a very beautiful area; very remote and quiet. The cabin had everything you could possibly need. The park itself was wonderful, and we took many nice walks. We loved the close location to the Great National Sand Dunes Park, and the natural falls. We even made a stop at the UFO watchtower - very interesting (and no, we don't normally chase UFO's!). Thanks so much for a lovely stay!
