About Mill Race House

I live and work in London but I know and love Ireland from my childhood. It has always been a special place for me and I am glad to still have this house to make this connection with the country strong.

Mill Race House purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Mill Race House chose Ballydehob

This was my grandmothers house and it is very dear to me, I am renting it so that it stays in the family. I hope that it brings as much joy to you as much as it does me.

What makes this cottage unique

The magnificent thing about this house is you feel completely closed of from the world and totally at piece, however you are mere metres from the lively little town of Durrus. It is very comfortable and has a warm feel to it and there are plenty of great bars nearby so if you fancy ducking out of the quiet life it is easily done!

Comfortable, welcoming village property

  • 4 out of 5
We stayed at the cottage for a week at the end of an unusually dry summer in West Cork. We know the area very well but have not stayed at this property before. We found it extremely comfortable and made particular use of the conservatory and outdoor area as the sitting room is somewhat dark during the day. Extremely well presented and very clean. The house is much more spacious than one expects from the listing and has been sympathetically renovated. We spent the week walking locally except for one stunning day out at Mizen head. Do not miss the scones at Ryan's and beg borrow and steal to go for dinner at Blair's Cove. We first went in 1983 and it is still as good as it was then with only very subtle changes over the years. We also had a good meal at Arundel's in Ahakista. We didn't need the heating and never used the oven so can't comment on either. It wasn't very wet so we didn't even have to dry boots and jackets! Eimear is very helpful and welcoming and I'm sure would be a great person for advice if you don't know the area.

Terrific location

  • 5 out of 5
Mill Race House is in a great location, close to village amenities and the beautiful coastline for easy walking and brave swimming. Excellent cooking at the Good Things Cafe; good Guinness and seafood at the local pubs.

The house is comfortable, clean and spacious with its own special style. Fine garden and courtyard. Emer the housekeeper was charming and helpful.

It was a joy to discover this area in late August when its amazing hedgerows of fuchsia, hydrangea and crocosmia were in full bloom. Could springtime be even better?

Quaint house in a great location

  • 4 out of 5
We stayed for three nights in June and really enjoyed ourselves. Emer, the care taker and her husband were very nice and had plenty of information to share about the house and things to do in the area. It is an easy drive to Sheep's Head or Mizen peninsula and you must visit Barely Cove beach! We also liked the town of Schull! There are local pubs within walking distance and a beautiful river and garden walk nearby. The house has a huge back patio with lights and interesting landscaping. Inside the kitchen is a cook's dream; very spacious and equipped with a restaurant quality gas stove. There is a wood or peat burning fireplace in the living room. If you are visiting in non summer months you will want to either pay for some heat oil or plan to have plenty of wood or peat on hand. The main bathroom is impressive with a claw-foot tub. There are shelves upon shelves of books; old and new. If you fancy some alone time you can relax in the sun room which is situated off the first floor bedroom. This house has a lot going for it and will not be disappointed!

lovely time in Mill Race House...

  • 5 out of 5
We were enthusiastically from Irland and which we could live in such a nice house. Mill Race House Cottage is miraculous and furnished tastefully, 1:1 with the photos. It is everything in the house what one needs. It is generous and maintained very much and the courtyard invites to stay.
We had a fantastic time there. Shops, pups, ectr. are in close vicinity.
We have warmly been taken up and come again certainly.
Our time was too short, nevertheless, we have seen a lot and experienced.
We have felt very well.
Many thanks for it :-)

Wonderful !

  • 5 out of 5
We loved our stay in Mill Race house ! It was like stepping back from our hectic lives for a brief magical spell. Our host Harry could not have been more efficient or helpful ! The satellite navigation co ordinates on the directions saved us , arriving unruffled and without 'divorce type ' rows on the way! We found the house charming, well equipped and comfortable. Situated at the edge of Durrus, it felt like being in the country ,yet it was just a 3 minute walk to the shops and ,more importantly the pubs ! We staggered back quite happily from 'the local',without having to get behind the wheel of the car ! The countryside is beautiful ,undulating and by the sea ,with lots of little coves and beaches to explore. Bantry is nearby and has great music as well as Bantry house and gardens. Our visit was too short and we would love to go back and stay for longer next time.

Great house, loved being on the edge of the village which is charming and so are the people. Bantry is a great town, delicious local food and we loved the market on Friday. Beautiful beaches and scenery so will definitely be coming back.

The small town of Durrus has to offer restaurants, bars, scenic walks in local countryside, Irish charm and hospitality, live music, and the many bays within a ten to twenty minute walk.

You are a ten minute drive from Bantry which can offer sea fishing, golf, a wider selection of bars, music and restaurants. There is also a charming market in the market square and many historical sights such as Bantry House.

There are further attractions throughout the county such as Blarney castle and the famous Blarney Stone. The English Market in Cork city and the many museums within the Capitol. The fantastic live music in Clonakility and it's market. Kinsale town has a wide variety of excellent restaurants and the harbour port has a number of entertaining distractions.

Or it is easy to relax and stay in the local area and drink well and eat good food. Whatever it is you are looking for we are happy to advise and offer our insights.
