Lichen is a comfortable open plan home, designed to allow for carefree and peaceful holidays. Water-views abound from almost every part of the house, while lawn and deck offer plenty of space for sunbathing and eating outdoors. Access to the waterfront is directly off the rocks and float at the front of the house. There's a Weber charcoal grill and picnics can be enjoyed on the broad deck. There are four bedrooms on the second floor, all with convenient lighting and ceiling fans. Three have queen beds with storage drawers beneath, and the fourth has four twin beds with storage drawers. All but one room have water views and the master bedroom has access to its own roof deck. A laundry alcove is in the hall. A shower room with dressing space and a full skylight bathroom with tub complete the upstairs. The first floor is an open space with one 'away' room on the north end. Two sitting areas, a dining area and kitchen surround a central fireplace in case of a summer cold snap! The kitchen is well-equipped and great for folks who love to cook. It has a 6-burner Viking range, two sinks, dishwasher, generous refrigerator and microwave. French doors open onto a deck that wraps the front of the house with wide steps down to the lawn. Closer to the waterfront is a broad patio with fireplace and seating wall on the rocks at the water's edge, a great place for star-gazing.
I grew up spending wonderful summers next door at a cottage my grandparents purchased in 1930. When the place next door came up for sale in 1989, my husband and I became its new owners in order to create a bigger gathering place for our large extended family. It continues in that role today.
Christina Hutton purchased this house in 1989
Lichen is part of a quiet and friendly neighborhood in an association which owns a beach down the way. The waters off Tuttles Point offer fishing, swimming, kayaking, and its protected nature is wonderful for young children. More ambitious adults can use the dock as embarkation point for paddling all around the Guilford and Madison waters, out to Faulkner's Island Light and the Thimble Islands. Ospreys, herons, gulls and many other shorebirds enjoy the area's protected waters and rich tidal marshes. The neighborhood is great for walking, bicycling, and riding tricycles.
I rented this home and the cottage next door for my extended family. What a beautiful and private location. The house was immaculate and beyond our expectations. We spent our days swimming and boating as well as making smores at the outdoor grill. This spacious home has a long table where we were able to all sit together for meals two or three times per day. The open layout of the livingroom, sun porch, kitchen and dining area set the stage for big family meals and games and art projects on stormy days, while providing ample space to curl up in a corner with a book. The owner, Christina, knows the area very well and was extremely generous with her suggestions for local restaurants and hot spots. She also responded promptly to our questions. I would recommend this spot to small groups of adults or families who are looking for a luxurious way to spend time at the Connecticut shore.
Perfect setting for a family get-together. Beautiful views, plenty of room, great kitchen--best pots and pans award for a rental house! Everything is intelligently and tastefully done.
The house is very bright in the morning, and on a sunny day in summer, air conditioning is a must, even though you are right on the water. The sun sets behind the house, however, so evening is cooler.
The "away room" makes a very good room not only for TV but also for kids' art area. The main sitting area is very comfortable for reading or conversation, though in morning it can be very bright.
The bathroom situation may sound like a potential issue, but we found that it worked just fine with 8 people in the house. The upstairs complete bathroom has a clever system of baskets in which each person can put toilet articles, The baskets store away easily. The shower room across the hall is a gem. You can admire the view of the harbor while you shower--and the window is framed in marble.
There are dimmers on substantially all the lights, there are motorized skylights that we would have loved if the weather had been a little cooler.
The refrigerator is a little unusual. It is very good, but a short person will be challenged to use the higher shelves. Cooperation therefore may be required.
I highly recommend this house. We have rented many places in the U.S. and in France, so we have experience.
