Eric & Paula Lambert moved to St John in July 1979.
We came on vacation and didn't want to leave!
At the time Paula was pregnant with our first child so this was a real leap of faith!
Eric was a builder and just finished up a project, Paula had recently graduated from San Jose State University with an accounting degree. These skills were just what we needed to start a new life on St John just at the time that a 20-year long building boom was beginning.
The design and finishes for Samba Azul were inspired by Eric's having been raised in Brazil. After not having been to Brazil since leaving in 1963, he went back to Rio for a school reunion with his brother and sister. They had a fabulous time and it ignited a desire in him to take Paula there to see where he grew up. The trip we took together inspired us so much we made it part of our business to import granite to St John and St. Thomas.
While we were there to learn about the granite business we purchased art work which is now in Samba Azul The name Samba Azul is BLUE SAMBA in English.
We were able to find the perfect blue granite for our floors and decks, and marble for the entry foyer columns. The villa is designed around those features.
Samba Azul was designed and built by us as a culmination of Eric's knowledge and skill after having built 29 vacation villas here for others.
Paula has built a strong reputation in her field of business -bookkeeping, tax preparation, and business license consulting.
Eric has retired from building villas, now does renovations, granite installations and villa maintenance.
Eric Lambert purchased this villa in 2011
The land was bought by us in 1980. We purchased 2 side-by-side lots because we wanted both sunrise and sunset views. We built our home and Blue Aweigh Cottage on the eastern facing lot and eventually (30 years later) built Samba Azul on the west facing lot. Because we could control the placement of all the buildings they do not block each others views or conflict in any way. Also, the lot is on a hillside where no other houses can be built which could block its views. There are always Caribbean breezes swirling around which cool the property. And the view includes the bay Chocolate Hole, and looks west towards St Thomas (in the distance) and beautiful sunsets.
It is located at the end of a dead-end road in a quiet and safe neighborhood. We have lived here , raised our children here. It is convenient to town, but it has a remote feel to it.
All the rooms are large and have high open beam ceilings.
The pool is right off the great room. The bedrooms have their own private decks, and their own large bathrooms.
The owners designed this for vacationers after having built almost 30 villas for others. Layout and amenities are based on many years of experience. We have traveled extensively through out the world. We furnished and equipped this villa with the traveler in mind. You should not be missing anything! The only thing missing is you :)
>As we wind down our 2 weeks here, we just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay in your beautiful home! It's been incredibly relaxing. Always seem to go too fast though.
>It was a pleasure meeting you and Eric. Wish you could have come for dinner. We had a great evening sharing stories of St. John and beyond.
We were there for 7 days and could not ask for anything better in regards to accommodations. My husband and I have been to St. John numerous times and have stayed in many different places. This is our "top pick" for villas so far. It is conveniently located close to town, but you absolutely need a car. The ride to the villa is a little bumpy thanks to the dirt road, but that's the flavor of the island! I would definitely recommend this villa to couples or families who are looking for that "top of the line" accommodation without the high price.
Samba Azul was excellent. Very conveniently located to Cruz Bay. Easy access to other parts of the island. The villa had everything you could possibly want to make you feel right at home. All you need are your clothes and food and everything else is there. The great part about Samab Azul is not just the excellent villa that Eric and Paula provide for you to stay but the personal touches that are left and shared by the other previous guests. The owners were great to work with. I would highly recommend this place to stay.
Samba Azul was just as described in the listing. No, I take that back -- it was better. The property is beautiful and beautifully maintained. It's not cookie-cutter. The house reflects the owners' history and passions.
Paula was on hand to give us a walk-through and texted back promptly when we had subsequent questions. We'll remember the sunsets and stargazing from the deck for a long time.
We had the most wonderful time at Samba Azul! The house was beautiful, the views wonderful (especially the sunsets!) and we were very comfortable. The owners were great and incredibly helpful. We'd go back in a heartbeat!
My husband and I took our young teenage girl and niece to St. John for spring break of 2011. Our goal was to introduce them to the islands and to snorkeling. We were so pleased to find Samba Azul! The two master suites made it a perfect getaway for us. The kitchen and living areas separating the two suites made it as if we were there alone and the girls completely enjoyed their privacy too! The mornings were so pleasant drinking our coffee on the patio. The granite is incredible. My husband had no problem conducting some of his necessary business by internet while we were there. Thanks to Eric and Paula who gave us perfect instructions to the best areas on the island for eating, renting gear and snorkeling! We spent most of our day out on the island snorkeling, adventuring and shopping. In the evenings we so enjoyed the full kitchen and pool. It seemed that everything we thought we forgot to get at the store was already available and there in the villa. And the villa was so clean and comfortable which I so appreciated. Samba Azul holds some of our families’ top best memories! Check out our themes we listed in the memory book there in the villa under Guest #3! This is a perfect place for a set of couples to stay because of so much privacy yet such comfortable group areas too. It has everything on our list! We will definitely be back again!
St. John's economy is thriving and many homes and condos are being built. Construction is everywhere on the island and can begin anywhere at any time.
We are not responsible for construction noise or disruptions and appreciate your understanding.
