Overview

Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday cottage in Honfleur - La Bouveterie

4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeps 8

'La Bouveterie' is a delightful, traditional 16thC half-timbered cottage and barn in the beautiful Valley d'Ingres in an unspoilt and quiet semi-rural location, within 5 minutes walk of the village of La Riviere St Sauveur which has bakers, butcher, pharmacy, general store, restaurants, newsagent and post office. A pretty, secure and spacious garden surrounds the property. The cottage is ideally placed in the Pays d'Auge region of Calvados for exploring the historic areas of Northern France. This area is at the heart of Normandy's 3 particular delights - cider, Calvados and cheese, of which Camembert is the most famous. Nearby are lovely sandy beaches and picturesque villages. Access to Honfleur from the main channel ports is both fast and easy via a quiet motorway network. Also Paris is just a 2 hour drive. Honfleur is, without doubt, the jewel of Normandy's coast. It has quaint cobbled streets, quayside restaurants and bars, art galleries and museums, a marina, and 2 public gardens.

Garden and barn: In the garden store, there is a freezer and a spare fridge together with plenty of garden chairs, sun loungers, sunbeds, parasols, bicycles and games. Upstairs in the barn is a very large games room ( accessed through the garden store) with table tennis, darts, table football and seating - an ideal indoor play area for children and adults alike! The pretty garden surrounding the property has well maintained lawns and borders and a brick barbecue. There are several garden tables for 'al fresco' dining. There is ample parking in the drive plus undercover parking for 2 cars.

Places to visit and things to do.: Deauville and Trouville are the nearest seaside resorts with vast sandy beaches - absolutely ideal for children. There is also a beach in Honfleur.

Bayeux - the first major town to be liberated on 6 June 1944 and famous for its 70m long tapestry housed in its own museum. Arromanches - the famous Mulberry harbour can be seen here along with many other D Day memorials.

Dives sur mer - William the Conqueror assembled his fleet here before setting sail for England. The town has a magnificent wooden market hall (Les Halles), dating from the C16th. Etretat- a seaside resort endowed with natural beauty. Monet painted his observations of the coastline here. Rouen - a city of great antiquity with the Gros Horloge medieval clock. Also within 2 hours drive are Monet's garden at Giverny, Paris and Mont St Michel.

A drive through the 'Suisse Normande' is a very pleasant trip. There is an information box at the property containing numerous leaflets on things to do and places to go in addition to the above ideas.

Bedding: Duvets and pillows are supplied but guests are asked to bring their own bed linen, towels and kitchen linen. For protection, all bed linen is covered and we ask that this is left on and clients' linen is put on top.

A highchair and cot are available for infants.

About Mr and Mrs G Aldridge

As a family we live in the Sevenoaks area so getting to Honfleur via the tunnel is fast and easy so a very well located property for us.

Mr and Mrs G Aldridge purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Mr and Mrs G Aldridge chose Honfleur

We had a holiday at La Bouveterie in 1999 and when it became available to buy we couldn't resist buying it and have loved it ever since.

What makes this cottage unique

We think the location is ideal. We can walk into the village in a few minutes and drive into wonderful Honfleur in under 10 minutes - cycling into town is an option too. The property is situated off a country lane with lovely views. Travelling further afield is very easy too via a good motorway network.

Perfect Family Getaway

  • 5 out of 5
I recently stayed at the lovely "La Bouveterie" cottage with my 2 sons (7, 8 yrs old), my sister and my folks. We had plenty of room and we all comfortable (do be aware though the bathroom in the cottage is upstairs and there is no direct access from the attic loft). The yard is large and was perfect for my boys to run around and have fun in the grass. There is also a game room above the barn with darts and ping pong. Each night we would sit outside and enjoy the beautiful setting!

The small village of Rivier St Sauveur is a 5-10 min walk and the baker, butcher and produce stand are all so nice and everyone was so friendly. LeClerc which is a large grocery/target sort of store is nearby, as is the beautiful town of Honfleur. The neighbors, Roger and Monique, could not be friendlier and really make you feel welcome and in the heart of Normandy since they do not speak any English. There is no wi-fi or cable but that turned out to be very nice - you can sit outside and talk and relax instead of checking your email!

Easy access to all areas of Normandy - Mont St Michel was a couple hours away but a nice drive. Deauville/Trouville less than 30 min away - great beach and seafood. Also explored the DDay beaches, Rouen, Bayeux - all easy drives from this great location.

I'd love to stay there again and hope to return! Diane was very easy to make arrangements with - thank you for everything!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very kind review, highlighting all the areas easily accessible from the house. Just to make clear - the cottage bathroom is accessible internally from the downstairs twin bedroom but there is no access to it from the attic bedroom. Regards, Diane

A lovely house in an ideal location

  • 5 out of 5
The house, garden and surroundings are as lovely as they look in the pictures. Everything was clean and well maintained and all the basics - dish cloths, cleaning materials, etc,, the things you often have to run out and buy were there - with lots of storage place and handy little shelves to put things on.
It was wonderful to be in the heart of the country and have two bakeries within 10 minutes walk along with good access to the road network. Great garden for bird-life.
We would recommend it to anyone but families might like to consider whether the configuration of bathrooms and bedrooms suits their needs

une charmante demeure

  • 5 out of 5

Wonderful Family Times

  • 5 out of 5
This was our second trip to La B and the wonderful memories came flooding back as soon as we arrived. To be welcomed by a bottle of wine and colouring books for the children show the extra mile Diane goes to make her guests feel at home. The house is so well equipped and clean and truly feels like a home from home. The garden is large and safe to allow the children to play happily for hours and there is always the games room! We were lucky enough to see the sun this year and eating outside was a real bonus and showed the house off in all its glory. We walked down to the village each morning for the excellent bakery, greengrocers and butchers plus Carrefour is a mere 5 min drive away for other supplies. There is an abundance of things to do in the area. Honfleur itself and the surrounding beaches took up the majority of our time again but a wet morning was spent in Natrospace (the children loved the butterflies) and a trip across the Seine to Jumieges was well worth it. The absence of wi fi, sky tv and even the Times newspaper is what this holiday is all about for us...fresh air in beautiful surroundings, adults unwinding, kids playing freely and safely. La B provides a super setting for quality family time, we love it and will be back! Thank you again Diane & Gary for sharing your wonderful home.

Perfect in every way

  • 5 out of 5
We had a wonderful stay and it is as fantastic as everyone states in their respective reviews. The cottage is picture postcard perfect and is well located close to the local bakery and a brisk walk or cycle into Honfleur, which is a magical place to wander around.

The two properties are very cosy (esp with the log fire on), clean and a true home from home. The games room was an added bonus keeping kids and adults alike amused for hours. The cycles also were much appreciated by those who didn't take their own with them and I would strongly recommend a cycle in the quiet lanes in land from the house as you get to see the best of the countryside and sleepy villages.

It was nice to be greeted by the friendly French couple and the eggs and wine were a nice touch. I have stayed in many holiday cottages and this was without doubt the best and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

Wonderful stay at La Bouveterie

  • 5 out of 5
We have just returned from a lovely week at La Bouveterie. Even in October the cottage, barn and gardens looked beautiful. Although very chilly when we arrived we soon got to work on getting the fire up and running. We thought the kitchen was very well equipped and the rooms and bathroom in the barn were very pretty ( it did take a long time for the rooms to warm up though so wrap up warm at night). Both buildings were lovely and clean for our arrival.
La Bouveterie is in a great location in that it feels rural but is a 5 minute walk from a lovely boulangerie,Les Halles and boucherie. As a young family, it is lovely to have the amenities just down the road so that the children could walk down the road to fetch the croissants. The chickens were a lovely sight in the mornings and the fresh (and enormous) eggs they produced even in October were very welcome.
We visited Honfleur which, out of season, was very relaxed, having been in haute saison it was a refreshing change to be able to find a table for a cider and crepe or meal without having to queue or rush our food for the next diners! Naturoscope butterfly sanctuary and the Aquarium were lovely for the kids. We also loved Etretat, Trouville fish market and Deauville beach for shells and kite flying! Plenty of supermarkets to enjoy within a 15km radius too! Wifi was available at the McDonalds near Honfleur so that was handy. if you are travelling with small children, a few childrens DVDs would be useful to add to the suitcase.
All in all a wonderful stay and we very much hope it is not our last. Thanks again to Diane and Gary for making it so pretty (Great paintings Gary!)

The medieval and historic town of Honfleur is less than a 10 minute drive from the property. It has strong connections with the Impressionist movement and the Eugene Boudin museum is well worth a visit. The weekly market on Saturdays is an ideal place to buy fresh produce - cheese, vegetables, bread and meats. In addition, there is a bio-marche on Wednesday mornings in the town. Deauville is an elegant seaside resort famous for horse racing, its casino and seafront promenade of timber decking and it has a lovely sandy beach. Trouville is a typical seaside town full of character and charm with a daily fish market and a sandy beach with activities for children. Both are within a 25 minute drive. Nearby are some very pretty towns and villages - Pont L'Eveque, Pont Audemer, Beaumont en Auge, Beuvron en Auge. Driving through the countryside in this area is a pleasure and the coastal route from Honfleur towards Deauville and further afield to Houlgate and Cabourg is very worth while.

Other Activities: 10 pin bowling, museums and galleries, boat rides, good restaurants
