Overview

Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Tremolat - Les Volets Bleus

Spacious country home, 6 bedrooms, perfect for families & friends together

Not far from Bergerac and Sarlat, where the Dordogne River makes a dramatic loop, “Les Volets Bleus” is a very private, high-end, beautifully-restored 300 year old stone farmhouse that sits on 2 acres of lawned garden, in the heart of the Perigord Noir, with tranquil views of the surrounding countryside. Within 3 minutes of the charming village of TREMOLAT, our spacious home is comfortably furnished with French country antiques and beautiful 'heavenly beds'. Situated among fig and walnut trees, with three sunny terraces: two that overlook the large, magnificent pool receiving day-long sunshine, it has all modern conveniences and is perfect for up to 12 people, with 4 queen bedrooms and 2 single/twin bedrooms, all with crisp white linens. It is ideal for 1 large family group, or for 2 or more smaller groups, since the Farmhouse and the Converted Barn each have their own fully-equipped kitchens, and dining/living areas, allowing complete independence.

Philosophy of the owners, Bill & Janice: We are the proud owners of “Les Volets Bleus” and purchased and upgraded/renovated the property in June 2005. Although our home is in California, we have travelled a great deal in Western Europe and have rented many properties – some great, and some less than spectacular! We always appreciated cleanliness, comfort, good beds, furniture you could actually sit on, great linens & towels, appliances that really worked, and nice big wine glasses! After buying our dream home, our philosophy hasn’t changed & we have upgraded the standard of the house to meet or exceed the best we’ve seen. Basically, we have designed it to be the way we’d like it if we arrived tired and hungry from across the world. We appreciate the chance that you take when you book on-line and hope that what you see is really what you’ll be getting! We guarantee you will not be disappointed - in fact, most of our guests feel that the reality of the house far exceeds their expectations.

Personal welcome: We have an excellent local manager who speaks both English and French fluently. You will be met personally, and have someone to answer any questions and address all your needs while your stay at our home. Our manager is well-versed in the house and the local area, and is very popular with our guests. We also provide you with very detailed maps and directions before your arrival, as well as information on the area so that you know exactly where to find everything you might need: such as days and towns for the best local market and inside tips and suggestions from previous guests. We want you to have the best possible experience in this wonderful area of the Dordogne that offers so much in the way of scenery, markets, activities, food adventures, and wonderfully warm people.

Internet access: We offer FREE fully-functioning, high-speed WIFI as well as free international telephones for all our guests.

Why Janice chose Tremolat

We found this beautiful area in 2003 when we took cooking classes in the area - and were amazed by the gentleness of the region: gentle food, gentle geography, gentle people. In addition, it's really how you hope life will be when you head to rural France. Most of our guests are shocked that a place like this REALLY exists! We looked at other countries, and considered other areas of France, but we pinch ourselves routinely at how fortunate we were to find villages like Tremolat, Le Bugue, Limeuil, Ste Alvere, Paunat and a place like the Dordogne. In addition, we're 15 minutes walk into Tremolat and 15 minutes drive from Le Bugue and Lalinde, so the easy access from Bordeaux and all the area is a plus. We've never met more welcoming and agreeable people in all our travels, and have never enjoyed food and wine like we do when at 'Les Volets Bleus'! We just love visiting our Farmhouse whenever we can. Rather than finding a holiday home, we've found a life.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The most commented on benefit about staying at our property is the number and quality of double beds, the wonderful linens and cleanliness of the house. We feel that when you're on vacation, you should sleep as well as possible, and so we spared no expense in finding and furnishing really good, queen-size beds in our home. We furnish them with Indian-cotton linens and great pillows - accompanied by soft, fluffy white towels. Others warned us that putting in 4 double bedrooms (and 2 singles) would be a mistake since you 'get more guests per room' if you put everyone in singles beds - but we disagreed! As a married couple, we LIKE to sleep together in a good bed when in vacation, so squashing together 2 tiny single beds is not our idea of fun! So at 'Les Volets Bleus' at least 4 couples get to sleep in a 'master' bedroom... rather than having one nice bedroom and then all the late-comers getting the dark rooms with single beds! Not my idea of fun either! In addition, we run our home like a boutique hotel with all the cleanliness, perks and amenities you'd expect at an upmarket location. We have an expert cleaning and prep team who go through the house with a fine-tooth comb... and it shows! So you can rest-assured that you will be sinking into beautiful, white, Indian-cotton sheets, and a bed that will give you the rest you deserve...and all in a house that meets the top standards for cleanliness. In terms of the outdoors, our guests also love all the terraces to sit outside on, and appreciate all the chairs and tables on each terrace, including all the pool chairs and towels. In addition, the beautifully clean, large pool (fenced to all highest EU regulations) is a winner with families of all ages in the summer. The proximity to all popular locations (being half-way between Bergerac and Sarlat) is also a definite plus, and our guests enjoy all the area has to offer, and not having to drive for hours to take part in it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This guest review was independently submitted to our "sister" site vrbo.com/79727:

Our trip to France was booked nearly a year in advance and eagerly anticipated by family who were coming from all corners of the world to meet after many years of not seeing each other. The farmhouse just outside of Tremolat turned out to be the perfect setting for a reunion, with very little distractions to take away from family time and plenty of areas to sneak away for a quiet catch-up over a glass or two of wine.

Farmhouse style al fresco eating was also a feature that resonates in the memory still, and the isolation of the place was such that the passing of a vehicle was enough to catch everyone's attention. When the lure of town called, Tremolat and many other equally charming villages were a short hop away. Janice was the ultimate hostess and she provided us with loads of useful information in the lead up to the trip, and support throughout our stay. Truly a local, Janice was able to connect us with people wherever we wanted to go and whatever we wanted to do.

The family fell in love with the region, and would happily return to stay in the farmhouse of one of Janice's other equally charming properties which we had the pleasure of visiting during our stay.

Fantastic vacation for families

  • 5 out of 5
We just enjoyed a fantastic vacation in "Les Volets Bleu" with three generations of family. The location and setup was ideal for meeting everybody's needs. The multiple bathrooms were very helpful so each family had their own space and privacy. The house is divided so one family can have their own house with complete kitchen two bedrooms and family room. The other part has 4 bedrooms, a big kitchen, and a living area. This is also convenient for kids play area while the adults have the other part of the house in the evenings. The plush linens and comfortable beds were wonderful. The kitchen is well stocked and set up for large family meals. However, we mostly ate on the patio. The whole setting is picturesque and perfect for family photo shoots. Janice the owner/hostess was delightful and entertaining. Her stories and advice made our trip even more interesting by personalizing the whole experience and making sure we took in all the Dordogne has to offer. We had wonderful days out wine tasting, had a delicious meal at the restaurant down the driveway, and took many beautiful walks straight from our front door. Staying at "Les Volet Bleu" with Janice looking after us made for a wonderful, memorable vacation for all. Each of us hope to return soon.

Another wonderful week at Les Volets Blue

  • 5 out of 5
My family and I first discovered Les Volets Blue last summer and returned again this year. Everyone loves it and think we'll be coming back!
The family range in age from 2 - 70+ but there is something for everyone to do. My parents liked to sit in the garden, under the wisteria and read books. My neices and nephews absolutely LOVED the pool! We all enjoyed the night markets and were lucky enough to be there for the one in Tremolat which was great fun. Day trips to beautiful old towns like Domme and Cadouin were lovely and we had a number of good lunches out. There are lots of places to enjoy evening meals too. the highlight for us this year was Le Vieux Logis
in Tremolat village. The Bistro was also very good and the Pizzeria was handy for early meals with the children. We have enjoyed the nearby caves, kayaking down the Dordogne and plenty of Boules in the garden after dinner!
The house is immaculate and extremely well equipped. Thoughtful extras like a welcome pack on arrival, iPod speakers, plenty of hairdryers and mosquito candles were appreciated. Everything is so comfortable including great beds (better than the one I have at home!) soft linen, pool towels provided etc. The laundry room is also handy.
The house is prettier than in the pictures and the description is spot on. I would certainly recommend Les Volets Blues

Quintessential French Farmhouse

  • 5 out of 5
I have been going to the Dordogne with my family for the past 20 years and have rented many, many places. This farmhouse is a perfect farmhouse just outside the very tony Tremolat, with the best restaurant in the area at the Vieux Logis. Each village has one main original farmhouse on its border and I believe Les Volets Bleus is the one for Tremolat. This large house on a huge property has its original rooms, stalls for probably goats across a large lawn, ancient water sinks, and those beautiful blue shutters everywhere. Incredibly charming and real. I really love that most of the rooms open out onto the patios for summer living. Great for kids to come in and out from the yard and pool area. The heart of this house is french country kitchen where we had the most incredible meals and memories. I also love that part of the house has a separate entry with its own kitchen. I actually stayed there for a little calmer space and gave over the main house to extended family and kids to use. Perfect for everyone. All day by the pool, which is nicely fenced, or eating, or exploring. By the way, kids just love all the castles and prehistoric sites.

I also want to note that while authentic and original, the property is very comfortable and luxurious. Lots of high quality linens, custom curtains and pillows, good beds, real glassware, kept up and very clean in a way that can't be easy in the countryside but Janice, who owns the house with her husband, does an incredible job. Couldn't ask for more. Do ask her for tips on where to eat and shop and visit. She knows the region well and seems to know all the vendors personally. Go far a field and see it all or just stay close and walk to the village for bread every morning, send the kids to town to the pizza place, or book an outdoor table at the Vieux Logis for a special dinner. Or even closer is Les Truffieres just next door for a perfect regional dinner in another farmhouse overlooking large meadow.

I wish you a great stay at Les Volets Bleus and hope you love the region as much as I do.

Charming French Dream Vacation

  • 5 out of 5
Our family had such a wonderful time at Les Volets Bleus. It is the most charming and well appointed home, decorated with the most impeccable taste and stocked for your every need. I felt like I was living in a French country magazine. There was plenty of room for our whole family and the pool, grounds and badminton provided hours of entertainment - especially great for the kids. The owners are amazingly helpful and you don't even need to buy a guide book for the region because they provide so much great information on what to see and do in the area. We made all our plans based on their recommendations and we were never disappointed. On top of all that right next door is a 5 star michelin restaurant -- "Les Truffieres" -- with unbelievable food and a wonderful ambiance. We frequently rent homes abroad for our summer vacations, but this experience was above and beyond -- definitely a unique and "must-do" vacation.

A perfect French country farmhouse

  • 5 out of 5
We found the Les Volets Bleus to be the perfect French country farmhouse ideally situated in the Dordogne for a long summer holiday. The owners have done a great job furnishing this authentic stone building with taste and comfort in mind (the website photos and description are exactly what you'll find). We loved that most of the ground floor rooms (kitchen, salon, bedroom) have big doors leading out to the yard and terraces allowing for warm summer breezes and easy in-out access for everyone between the indoors and the pool, garden, and lovely dining terrace. Each of the bedrooms is beautifully decorated with down pillows and comforters and high quality linens, making for some of the best night’s sleep we’ve had in ages. The thick stone walls helped keep the rooms both quiet and cool! In addition to the character and comfort of the farmhouse, its location immediately next to a small family-run restaurant (Les Truffierres) and just about a 15 minute walk downhill to the village (Tremolat) made it even more perfect for us. We had several meals next door and appreciated the delicious regional specialties, the affordability, and the warmth of host. A morning or afternoon stroll into the village for baguettes, pizza, a meal at the bistro, or a special treat at the Michelin starred restaurant made for such a completely sublime experience that we almost didn’t make it to all the wonderful sights in the region. We’ve told an endless number of friends about this particular place (and by the way, the warmth and helpfulness of the owners) and hope we’ll be able to return many times in the years to come.

A Fabulous week in Tremolat

  • 5 out of 5
On our recent trip to France we travelled to the South West and spent a fabulous week at Les Volets Bleus in the beautiful village of Tremolat. Secluded and farmlike, the area is beautiful and peaceful, yet only minutes from the beautiful village which boasts a famous chateau serving world-class food, a village restaurant, and a few shops. Right next door to the farmhouse is the wonderful Les Truffiers specialising in duck (of course). Every bit as good as a Parisian restaurant its homely country feel and reasonable prices are unique.
The farmhouse itself is clean, well-appointed, stylish and comfortable, with beautiful French antique furnishings and best of all the best quality white linen and divine beds and pillows. The garden and pool are great and I must say renting this home has pretty much spoiled us for renting anywhere else, as usually rental properties rarely live up to expectations as this did. The owners have put a lot of effort into the home and made sure it lacks nothing that a holiday-maker would need.
The owners were delightful to deal with, and made sure our stay was totally hassle-free... can't wait to return!

There is a highly-regarded 'ferme auberge' (farm restaurant) is on the property immediately next door (a short walk down a country lane). It is open for lunch and dinner most days. It is very reasonable and serves delightful local cuisine. Our guests always rave about their experiences at 'Les Truffieres'. There are three additional restaurants in Trémolat. This is therefore an ideal location for either eating out, or enjoying a summer meal at home.
