Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday chalet in Les Houches - The Alpine Retreat

Chalet - 4 bedrms, 3 bathrms, sleeps up to 10. Apt - 1 bedrm, 1 bathrm sleeps 4

The chalet + separate apt (part of the same property but with a private entrance) are superbly situated in the bustling ski resort of Les Houches, Chamonix (free bus and train available up/down the valley). Perfect for skiing in winter - right next to the pistes and just a 3 minute walk from the lifts and ski school - so close you can ski back for lunch! Ideal for alpine adventures in summer, in the heart of the renowned Chamonix Valley. There is a large private garden with unsurpassed views over the Mont Blanc massif. Just a 3-min walk from shops, restaurants, a bakery + several bars. The tastefully refurbished, exceptionally spacious accommodation has all mod cons, but retains a wealth of original features. Unlimited free wifi internet access and DVD/satellite TV are free.

You don't need 10 people to enjoy the spacious farmhouse with its 3 bathrooms and 2 reception rooms; we often have groups of 4 - 6 people relaxing in the warmth and wonder of this beautiful farmhouse chalet - we are currently offering a £400 discount for groups of 6 or less who would like to rent the Farmhouse :-)

Travel.: Most of our guests either fly to Geneva airport (EasyJet) which is less than an hour's drive/bus journey away, or they drive from the UK (8 hours from the French ferry ports). Other nearby airports include Turin (1 3/4 hrs drive) Lyon (2 hrs) and Milan (3 hrs). Car hire is available at all of these airports. We can arrange transfers from Geneva airport if required.

About Rob and Suzanne LEA

We came to live at The Alpine Retreat and run it as a self-catering business in early 2001. Since then we have built up a large group of returning guests, many of whom have become family friends. Rob is a Professional Photographer specializing in large format landscape images and interior chalet/hotel photography. Suzanne is a professional Sports Massage Therapist and Fitness Trainer. We both really enjoy outdoor activities including running, paragliding and exploring these beautiful mountains.

Rob and Suzanne LEA purchased this chalet in 2000

Why Rob and Suzanne LEA chose Les Houches

We love the great outdoors and this lovely Alpine Retreat is a wonderful Savoyarde Farmhouse in the middle of a spectacular mountain setting, yet with a friendly little village close by. The original features of the property have been lovingly maintained, but we have subtly added all the mod cons needed for the C21! It's a real gem!

What makes this chalet unique

The Alpine Retreat is a really special place, which you will share if you stay here! The views, the activities, the peace, being surrounded by Nature all create a very positive energy and we find it both invigorating and yet somehow very relaxing. Our guests leave uplifted and energised!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Ideal property for big group

  • 4 of 5

Property had all facilities available for staying with group of 8-10 adults. Kitchen was well equiped. Only 5 minutes walk from ski lifts and baker.

Good value, convenient, spacious

  • 4 of 5

We rented Alpine Retreat as a family party comprising 3 couples. It was very spacious for 6 and still good value. We therefore did not use the bunk room which would accommodate another 4 but the property is well equipped for 10. The descriptions are accurate and the views from the windows lovely - especially at sunset. The property is on the main road - runs about 8 feet below and to the right of the picture but we did not find this disturbing - the bedroom windows are triple glazed. This also means that the bus stop is almost outside - albeit the walk up to the main gondola is only 5 minutes so this is perhaps most useful if getting to the Carrefour which is further the other way. Bedrooms and the sitting room are panelled and some might find dark but it is an old building and this is part of the character. There is certainly a massive dining kitchen area with huge table which is light and airy where we found ourselves spending most of the time despite the large television with Sky and a good selection of DVDs in the next door sitting room (3 huge sofas). The chalet is well equipped with loads of plates, glasses, cooking equipment (huge saucepans for big parties) etc. There are 3 showers and loos so no competition there. There is a large hot water tank so sensible showering means everyone has some. The chalet is almost exactly half way between the main gondola and town so could not be more perfectly situation. Rob and Suzanne were extremely helpful and friendly and anxious to sort out anything which was not quite right. We were also welcomed by Ruth and Gregor who act as secondary caretakers and live next door. Recommend the resort which is very friendly and prettier than Chamonix. The airport transfer organised by Rob and Suzanne was completely hassle free and efficient.

Owner's Response: Thank you RC for such a comprehensive review about your recent holiday here at The Alpine Retreat - we were delighted that you all enjoyed yourselves so much. It was great that you managed to explore so much of the Valley using The Alpine Retreat as your base - we too think that the location is pretty hard to beat! Lovely to meet your family and their friends too - and good that you found that you had plenty of space here. You would be very welcome to return, summer or winter, if it fits in with your plans - we hope that you do :-) Thank you again, Suzanne and Rob

Fantastic Chalet in the Chamonix valley!

  • 5 of 5

Our family has just returned from a fabulous holiday at the Alpine Retreat. The owners were extremely friendly from our first e-mail to the end of our stay and the Farmhouse was everything that we could have hoped for. It was scrupulously clean, well-equipped, extremely spacious, warm and cosy. We found the Farmhouse to be very conveniently located. It is close to the cable cars, next to the pistes and just a 2-minute walk from several restaurants, bars and shops. We had the most amazing week and would have no hesitation in highly recommending the Alpine Retreat to anyone.

Comfortable accommodation in a superb location

Review for Alpine Retreat Farmhouse

Groups of 5 or 6 of us have spent a week in June at the Alpine Retreat Farmhouse four times in recent years – we keep going back, so obviously we enjoy it. As walkers we are out every day exploring the Chamonix valley and beyond. We do not have our own transport, but the bus stop is just up the road and our local station for the Chamonix Express about 10 minutes walk away. ‘Express’ is perhaps a bit of a mis-nomer – this delightful train comes slowly around the corner and if you stick your hand out it will stop for you. If you stay at the Farmhouse you will get a pass that gives you free travel on the buses and trains throughout most of the Chamonix Valley, all the way from Servoz to Vallorcine.

The Farmhouse is spacious and well equipped. We self-cater most of the time and often spend the evening chatting around the splendid dining room table rather than in the lounge, although that is a comfortable room. There are a couple of supermarkets in Les Houches, both with a good selection of food and drink. The nearest is about a 15 minute walk, though you can take the bus if you get the timing right. The thing we really enjoy about staying at the Farmhouse is sitting in the garden with tea and cakes after each walk, just looking at the superb view of the snow-clad mountains down the valley.

There are two lifts in Les Houches (Bellevue and Prarion), both about 10 minutes walk from the Farmhouse. They each take you up to about 1800m, from which you can do either circular walks at altitude, or else walk down to places like St Gervais or the Chalets de Miage and Les Contamines, eventually taking a bus down to Le Fayet and then train back to Les Houches. (Get timetables from the Tourist Office in Les Houches, this service is NOT included in your free pass and is less frequent than the Chamonix Valley service.)

We also have used the bus and/or train to travel to Argentière or Le Buet and done walks to the top of the La Flegere lift and then the Grand Balcon Sud, either walking back to Chamonix or using the Brevent lift. The Petit Balcon Sud is a less strenuous walk along the river from Argentière to Chamonix. Try to include a stop for a drink and/or food at the La Floria chalet on one of your walks, the views from there are splendid and the flower decorations on the chalet and in the gardens are a wonderful sight. From Le Buet there is a lovely walk to up to Bérard’s Gorge and the Refuge beyond.

We look forward to hosting you all again at The Alpine Retreat next summer ....thank you again.

Fabulous skiing week!

  • 5 of 5

Our 2 families have just enjoyed the most fabulous skiing week at the Alpine Retreat. The farmhouse is beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean, very spacious and it has the most incredible views of the mountains (a photo of which has pride of place in our home!). The location is really excellent, with easy access to the lifts and we could even ski back to the farmhouse for lunch. The bus stop is just 50 metres away and it is also possible to take the train to Chamonix and Vallorcine. Lovely range of different places to eat on the doorstep and a great patisserie which my husband enjoyed visiting every afternoon! The best treat of all was relaxing in front of the roaring wood burner in the evening – felt really cozy and indulgent! None of us wanted to leave at the end of the week. Thoroughly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Eric, for letting other potential guests know about your wonderful holiday here at The Alpine Retreat! We were delighted that you enjoyed so much of the Valley on the trains and buses - and that your family ski week went so well. You know you'll be most welcome to join our growing group of returning guests :-)

Fantastic mountain holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was our most fantastic holiday ever! Suzanne and Rob made us feel sooooo welcome and nothing was too much trouble for them. The farmhouse was ideally located between the 2 cable cars, and we could explore the beautiful area without the use of a car ... the hiking was brilliant, well-marked and with stunning vierws. Relaxing in the pretty garden after a days' adventures was a wonderful bonus and the spacious accommodation left us plenty of room to spread out, eat, drink and enjoy friends' company. This summer holiday was easily as good as our winter holiday at the Alpine Retreat. Excellent in all respects .... don't miss it! It gets booked up quickly!.

Les Houches is a lively ski resort in the infamous Chamonix valley at the foot of the majestic Mont Blanc.  A huge range of activities suits every taste. Summer visitors enjoy hiking, mountain biking, rafting, climbing, paragliding, canyoning and glacier walking.  Access is easy using cable cars (the nearest is just 3 mins' walk away), mountain trains, buses + well marked trails. In Winter Les Houches is a very popular ski resort in the Chamonix valley. The pretty tree-lined pistes, whilst family-friendly, provide challenging skiing for all - it hosts the Men’s World Cup Downhill race each Jan.  Whilst there are numerous mountain restaurants, you will be close enough to pop back to the Retreat for lunch! Local attractions include Huski & St Bernard kennels, ice-skating, indoor climbing, sledging (in the garden + at a park), swimming etc.  A free bus and train give easy access to Chamonix's surroundings. Day trips to Italy + Spa + skiing the Vallee Blanche are very popular day trips.

Other Activities: Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hiking, climbing (rock and ice), rafting, canyoning, paragliding, golf, indoor climbing wall

Ski: Our location is unbeatable; next to the pistes of Les Houches (one of the 5 resorts that make up the Chamonix valley) - a large family resort which has skiing to suit every level. Even the Men's World Cup downhill race is held here each year on the piste that runs past the end of the garden! There are more than 20 ski runs giving miles of pistes + the tree-lined trails are undoubtedly the best in the valley. The 2 cable cars, (located 2 minutes from the Retreat) + numerous chair lifts give easy access to the extensive skiing area on our doorstep and the huge range of traditional mountain restaurants make the resort one which many visit year after year. Over 100 snow canons make skiing back to the village/chalet a reality throughout the season and local transport is available (nearest bus stop is just 50 meters from the Alpine Retreat) enabling free access to the other resorts in the valley for those without a car.
