The Kato house is a traditional jewel, lovingly restored and more than remarkable. I am a commercial lawyer from Northern Ireland. My partner is Zacharias Petrakis, a specialist stone mason/builder from Pano Elounda. For the past 7 years I have split my time between Crete and the UK. Zach and I restore and build properties in the area, mainly for non Greeks. We now live in Pano Elounda in another restored village house. I have four children all presently working or studying in Ireland, London and Scotland who love coming out to stay in the Kato House in the summer, as do many other members of my large family who come from all parts of the world here to meet up.

Jessica Whittington purchased this house in 2001

My entire family fell in love with this house when I saw it. For us it was a rare chance to buy a traditional house with modern comforts, close to the village centre but still with a quiet village feel and wonderful view. We had loved Elounda for years but didn't want a standard new build. We lived in the house for a few years before we finished the one we currently have and have loved it winter and summer. Zacharias was initially against buying the house, He didn't like the lack of on street parking, Greeks don't walk! But even he has come to love it and he has added some wonderful features, including the elliptical stone fireplace, which in winter can be enjoyed from both the living room and the kitchen. The latticed wooden ceilings inspired him to do the same in other restorations.

I love this house and I have lived in it.When I decided to rent it in 2010, I wanted all my guests to enjoy it too. This is a much loved original family home and I hope that shows. Having been a tourist myself for many years for me the priorities are cleanliness, comfortable beds, a well stocked kitchen ( with large fridge and washing machine) and lots of hot water and towels! Because we are on hand, our guests know that any problems will be sorted very quickly. I don't think there is a comparable traditional house for rent in the area.

Wonderful holiday in a charming home.

We spent a wonderful week in this unique property where you're not far from the wonderful hustle and bustle of Elounda but far enough away to enjoy some peace and tranquility. I know we were there out of season (just) but very few people seemed to venture into the labyrinth of tiny streets that comprises Kato Elounda and those that did, did so with respect and wonder. No boxy apartments or villas up here. Now we're home we long for the view from the main bedroom window, sunrises were beautiful....every day! Ok, so the house is a climb up uneven ground but even the unfit can do it gently. We loved it and would recommend it highly. The house itself has everything you could wish for and I'm sure if it's not there, Jessica will put it there for you. Nothing is too much trouble and we really appreciated the introduction to the house, from the initial pick up and drive up to the house to get the lay of the land, to the really useful information sheet provided, telling you everything you need to know and more besides. We had hired a car although you don't need to do this and we were shown where to park this and walk up to the house. If you hire a very small car and you are feeling brave, it's possible to get closer. Elounda is very self contained with a huge choice of cafes, bars and restaurants. Jessica's recommendation of Kanali Restaurant should be followed up, we had a lovely meal there. Also The Carob Tree in Plaka is well worth a visit, we went twice. If you are going to Spinalonga, go early and go from Plaka, which is about 4km along the coast. The crossing is quieter from there and doesn't seem so commercialised.Plaka has some charming shops, 'The Green Shop' is just lovely. Elounda gets very swollen with visitors bussed in to visit Spinalonga, no doubt thanks to Victoria Hislop. The Eden Bar in Elounda has great service, a brother and sister set up, both really friendly and super efficient.
We also visited Agios Nikolaos and whilst great for shopping, it wasn't as intimate as Elounda. Another day we took a drive all the way around the bay to Muchos. We had sat and looked at the view for nearly a week and it kept inviting us to go and take a closer look.... we're glad we did, some of the views are spectacular.
We'd highly recommend this property to you, it has charm and character that you rarely see in rented holiday accommodation.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much Moira for that really all encompassing review, it is great when guests who are new to the area like it so much. It was lovely to meet you both- the outside light on the terrace has now been installed! I do hope you come back sometime.

My friends and I had a wonderful holiday here. The house is just perfect, it has everything you could possibly need and is very relaxing. Evenings spent looking out to sea on one of the two balconies. Its a steep walk down into town but very pleasant, there are plenty of bars and restaurants and the coast is beautiful. Jessica was very friendly and welcoming, she went beyond what we expected and was very charming. Its a shame we ran out of time to have a social drink with her and Jak, maybe next time because we will be back !
Owner's Response: Thanks Lynn. It is always so good to meet people who visit Elounda and the house for the first time and enjoy it so much. I know you all made the most of the area, the introduction to diving day and the kayaking to name just two! I really looking forward to seeing you all again, we'll definitely get together properly next time.

I just wanted to let you know, that we had an amazing holiday in your house. Thank you so much.
The house is really breathtaking and we enjoyed every single minute there. The location, the view, the small details and everything you need, is in there. Just perfect.
You can really see and feel, that it was built with love :)
Furthermore the service was perfect. Rose came and cleaned the house and gave us new towels. And Zach was always there when we needed him.
Tell him again thanks and greats from us.

Thanks to you as well, for organizing and renting it to us. And I am sure, it wasn´t our last time there.
(I have recommended it also to my family :) so we hopefully will be there again as soon as possible.

Amazing village house

We loved the house, full of character, spiral staircase, beams, wonderful views. We enjoyed the walk up the hill, not for the unfit, less than 10 mins walk to the sea. My friend and I shared the house, I used the outside bedroom, she the beautiful main bedroom. We liked the weathered outside furniture, rustic chic, suits the house. A bit chilly at night in October needed extra blankets also more cooking utensils and pans required. Not suitable for children, 3 terraces. We really appreciated the lifts with our luggage up and down the hill. We could have stayed longer than 2 weeks, lovely village and neighbours, Elounda very friendly we were made very welcome. Very helpful owners, lots of local information.

We have just returned from 3 weeks stay at ‘The Kato House’. The description is fair, and the views are quite amazing. We had wonderful weather, and as Elounda does attract a strong breeze, it was welcomed when sunbathing on the compact terraces. The house was clean and tidy on arrival, with ample space for the four of us. It does sleep six, but this would be quite a squeeze for 6 adults, and more appropriate for maybe 2 adults and 3 or 4 children. The air con was a welcomed addition, as the evenings and nights were very sticky. The house is quite well equipped, but could do with a little updating in the outdoor furniture department, but I’m sure it will be by next season. We also found that it lacked a sharp knife, which we brought locally. We did most of the cleaning ourselves despite the offer of a weekly service, but with a washing machine and all the cleaning utensils on site, it was no problem. As stated the location is not for the elderly or infirmed, and the walk up and down the hill will help burn the calories off from all the wonderful food available at the local tavernas, but we also cooked some wonderful BBQ’s , and one or two spag bols with local salads, and then enjoyed the night views over Elounda. The location is very peaceful and tranquil, and the village has a charm about it. Elounda has a variety of restaurants, tavernas and bars to suit all tastes and ages.
There is a TV, which was not connected to an aerial, but the DVD and VCR did work on it, we took CD’d with which played through the DVD. There was plenty of hot and very strongly pumped water, which was welcomed after a day on the local beach.
We had issues with a broken lock, which Zack tried to resolve with some WD40; however after Zack also locked himself in, having to escape out of the window, we ended up removing it as it was safer. We have no complaints and would recommend the house for those wanting to partake in village life. The location is perfect for sightseeing or simply unwinding, with the beautiful Plaka just down the road or Ag Nik a short bus ride or drive away.
All in all a very enjoyable stay which we will be happy to do again next year.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your postive and thorough review. This is our first season and we're hoping to build on repeat customers and personal recommendations so it means alot to us that you took the time to write. We will certainly be upgrading the outside furniture next year as you suggest and hope to have the wi-fi connection too. So sorry about the kitchen knife- defintely will be sorted asap! Hope you enjoyed our DVD and book selection, I know you found our brief local information guide useful. Thanks again and hope to see you again soon.

Notes:
Air-conditioning in the second floor bedrooms only. Downstairs has floor fans. The property is not suitable for young children or older people due to the nature of the inside stairs and low balcony walls. Parking is on street and is limited in high season, the street itself is very narrow and driving up it is not for the faint hearted! Easy parking is always available below the church, approx 200 metres away. Kato Elounda is on a hill, so the downhill walk to the village is an easy 7 minutes, the uphill walk home is a lot more taxing! Car rental is not essential, but you have to be fit enough for the hill. No taxi access. We are local owners and are more than happy to provide lots of information about almost anything. This house is very suitable for those wanting to experience both Greek village life and the good tourist facilities of Elounda,Previous guests have been families with teenage children, couples and girls only activity holidays.
