Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday villa in Castries - Mango Plantation House

4 bedrooms, sleeps 8, 2 bathrooms, tropical garden,Ocean views

La Plantation des Manguiers (Mango Plantation) dates back over 100 years. It has all the hallmarks of a house built to make the most of the climate in years gone by before air conditioning. The windows sport big heavy shutters and there is no glass, allowing the balmy trade winds to flow through the house. The sheltered wrap around veranda stays cool from morning to night protecting the interior from the heat of the day. From this sleepy veranda you can relax whilst watching the world go by in the distance. The commanding view changes constantly, with sailing boats, small planes, cruise ships, the changing colors of the sea and the sky all offering entertainment. On a clear day Martinique can be seen, sometimes so clearly that you feel that you could swim there! The interior of the house is elegantly decorated and furnished in keeping with the 'plantation' style wherever possible and is comfortable and inviting whilst still offering all the mod-cons to ensure a relaxing stay.

The villa is owned by Chef Jacques and his wife Cathy. They also own Jacques Waterfront Dining Restaurant which recently re-located to Rodney Bay on the Waterfront at the entrance to the Marina and is open lunch and dinner every day and brunch on Sundays.

In addition, wedding receptions, birthday parties; in fact any celebration can be arranged at Jacques or catered to the villa. There is a private waterfront deck at the restaurant for larger groups, discounts to villa guests apply, contact Cathy.

Transportation : La Plantation des Manguiers is situated close to Castries the buses are regular. From Castries it is possible to catch buses to anywhere you want to go but be prepared for loud music and being a little squashed! The buses generally don't use air conditioning either, so it is hot but breezy with the windows open. Also please note that the walk to and from the house is for those who are of an above average fitness especially in the heat.

We live half way down a one way road with a bus stop at the top and the bottom. The walk to the bus stop from the house is all down hill. Coming back to the villa it is possible to get off the bus at the top of the hill and walk down the road to the drive way to the villa, however the drive is quite steep and would be challenging to those who do not walk on a regular basis especially in the heat. In this case I would recommend hiring a car. NB. Please contact Cathy for further information on special car hire deals.

Airport information: La Plantation des Manguiers is 21 miles or 1 hour 20 minutes by car from the international airport Hewanorra, which is situated in Vieux Fort in the south of the island. Helicopter transfers are available between Hewanorra and George FL Charles airport in Castries which is only 10-15 minutes by car from the villa. George FL Charles also has flights coming in from other Caribbean islands and flights that connect through Peurto Rico from the USA. Airport transfers are suggested and can be arranged, contact Cathy.

About Cathy Rioux

I was born in Nottingham in the U.K. and spent part of my childhood in Yorkshire, Guernsey in the Channel Islands and Oxfordshire. I studied Hotel Management at Bournemouth University in the UK. I have traveled extensively since then working on a cruise ship, in Bahrain in the Middle East and Sudan in Africa, eventually settling in St Lucia 19 years ago with my husband Jacques who is French and our two children who were toddlers are the time and are now studying at University in Europe. We originally came to St Lucia as Jacques was offered a job as the Executive Chef at Anse Chastanet Hotel in Soufriere. Four years later we decided to move to Castries and open our own restaurant. 'Jacques Waterfront Dining' was located not far from the house in Castries until July 2011 when it was destroyed by fire. Jacques re-opened on 11/11/11 in Rodney Bay in a fabulous waterfront location with view over the Marina.

Cathy Rioux purchased this villa in 1999

Why Cathy Rioux chose Castries

I will never forget the first time that I saw La Plantation des Manguiers (Mango Plantation for short). I was teaching English to children in a French school here in St Lucia. One December another teacher and I decided to teach the children Christmas Carols and organise a bus tour around each of the children's homes to sing to their newly learnt songs to their families. One of the children lived in Mango Plantation at the time. The bus driver dropped us at the bottom of the drive and we walked up the drive with the children. When we got to the top of the drive the view just took my breath away (or what was left of it after the steep climb) a lover of Caribbean architecture I instantly fell in love with the wooden Plantation house and said to my friend 'If I ever live in Castries, I want to live in this house' I never thought another thing about it until a few years later we met the family that was currrently renting in the house, we became good friends and we spent happy times there visitng them. As they were getting ready to leave St Lucia, Jacques and I were getting ready to open our restaurant in Castries and needless to say we jumped at the chance to rent the house. We lived in the house for 9 years and asked the owners if we could buy it several times but they were not ready to sell until 4 years ago. We absolutely love our house and we know that you will too!

What makes this villa unique

Plantation des Manguiers is a typical Caribbean Plantation style house. The foundations date back over 100 hundred years. The wooden part has been renovated over the years but by all accounts has been kept true to the original style. The view is superb. We never get tired of sitting on the veranda and watching the ever changing sea and sky. We look out over the City of Castries to Pigeon Island beyond. On a clear day we can see Martinique so well, you would believe that you could swim there! The lights twinkle at night. We live only minutes from Castries but the house feels secluded, there are neighbors but we can't see them, and they can't see us.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Merci beacoup Cathy. Merci encore.

Thank you very much Cathy, we enjoyed your marvellous house and won't forget the marvellous breakfasts with a panoramic view. Your house is ideally located to visit the north and the south of the island. The charm of the house and the island won us over. Thanks once again.

Wonderful house, wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this wonderful house on our first visit to St Lucia. The house was a major reason for us choosing to come to St Lucia in the first place, having seen so many bland and overpriced villas and apartments elsewhere. We were not disappointed. The house and everything about it was exactly as shown in the photos and description, which is not always the case with holiday homes. The only change was the single beds on the landing have been replaced with a sofa and armchair and so this is now the perfect spot to read or use the internet with a stunning view of Castries and the sea beyond through the little window.

We agree with all the other reviews and many positive comments made in them. One big bonus for us was the reliable and fast internet access so that we could keep in touch with home, share our holiday experience with friends, and keep our self-employed businesses ticking over. It was also invaluable in helping to sort out a minor crisis during our stay.

We hired Cathy's car and were very glad we did, and also for driver Stanley coming to meet us at the airport - well worth the small extra cost. St Lucia's roads are an adventure in themselves, mainly due the alarming gradients encountered on all the hilly roads (not least up to the house itself), but 4WD and automatic makes it as easy as possible. Driving yourself is great fun once you get used to it, but certainly not something for the inexperienced or feint-hearted. Once we had learned the local driving rules we found other road users to be mostly very thoughtful and considerate. On many occasions pedestrians or other drivers would offer us directions within seconds of us looking a bit lost - a novel alternative to road signs which are almost entirely absent. The house is ideally located for visiting almost all of the rest of the island on day trips.

Our favourite beach was just inside the wall at Pigeon Island with the excellent Jambe de Bois cafe nearby, an idyllic spot with good facilities where you can just be with the locals, watch the boating action in Rodney Bay and get away from the resort dwellers. The Pink Plantation House restaurant just a short distance directly up the hill from the house was a joy, and of course Cathy and Jacques own restaurant is not to be missed. So many good memories, too many to include in a short (?) review. We will be back one day.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have you to stay with us it is always nice to have people in our house who love it as much as we do! We look forward to welcoming you back. Cathy and Jacky

Treasured memories were made here!

  • 4 of 5

We began every morning and ended each evening enjoying the front porch and all its wonderful offerings. The sights and sounds both day and night awakened our senses and love of nature. We felt peaceful, private, and relaxed. The villa was presented so well I felt like I had been there before!

The weather was perfect. Although it rained a few times , we could keep going and be dry in a few moments! And the smell of the rain forest was luscious.

Getting around was a bit tricky. We rented Cathy's car which was perfect, but driving place to place was a challenge. You might want to research your choices. However, we did manage to experience many activities such as zip lining, horseback riding, taking a huge Catamaran to Soufrie, visiting the drive-in volcano, snorkeling, swimming, visiting the Pink Plantation, touring the Rum Distillery, and many more....all worthwhile.

The restaurants are great including Jacque's on the waterfront and Spinnakers on the beach. All our other meals were, of course, on the front porch.!

Cathy was helpful and friendly. She even lent us her two spectacular doggies, Maya and Millie, who added to our pleasurable stay. ( You don't have to have the dogs if you'd rather not.)

So GO, explore, meet some neat people, learn all about St. Lucia, and have fun at Mango Plantation!

Amazing stay at La Plantation des Manguiers (Mango

  • 5 of 5

We had a delightful stay at this open air plantation. Pictures are spot on and the view is amazing! Cathy met us and escorted us to the house and showed us all around. The house is comfortable with decorative gated windows to allow in the caribbean breezes and wooden locked shutters in case of rain. The grounds are beautiful with fruit trees and flowers. The front porch is a perfect spot to enjoy the incredible view of the harbor of Castries. We felt safe in our surroundings and the owner is nearby if you have any questions. Books and pamphlets in the house for exploring the island. We rented a car and enjoyed visiting many of the sights and beaches. We thought we might need air conditioning but the owners have a fan at the foot of each bed with nets around the 4 poster beds and we were always comfortable during our stay. I have always wanted to stay in a house with the tradewinds blowing in and out and this made our stay unique. The house has been updated and cared for and if you truly want to embrace island style, this is the place to stay. Our space and time was respected by all, with schedules by a caring owner. Special "Thank You's!" go to Cathy, the owner, who was always attentive, helpful and caring. To Angie, who always kept the house neat and clean, and we felt like neighbors talking to her. To Glenroy, a true softspoken gentlemen, who cared for the gardens and climbed the coconut trees and showed us the fruits of this special place, and yes, the sour orange juice was delicious! Once in a while you visit a place and you feel at home. You leave with a special memory and feeling. We truly left this place as friends. We highly recommend!

Maison de charme, traditionnelle

  • 4 of 5

  • 4 of 5

A memory that we will cherish!!

  • 5 of 5

Four days before our trip, my mother inlaw was not able to go. Was not sure at first being a mom with twin boys, going alone!! Well that lasted 2 minutes after we met Cathy. The boys were able to experience living like real St. Lucians. The house had everything we needed, the view was breathtaking. Cathy and her husband were there for us everyday, she even gave me her phone with numbers put in. She oraganized a driver for us, took us place to see and do. The neighbours not too far or close, were very friendly and said if I needed anything. Angie the maid, who we have become to miss, cook us meals, and taught my boys about St. Lucia. The gardener showed they boys how to climb a coconut tree. I had alovera plants for our sun burns, and was shown how to do it myself. the house does not have air, but you don't need it with the warm breeze going thru. We felt so safe at cathys, that I would leave the doors a windows open until bedtime. I could go on about our amazing holiday at the plantation house, but listening to my boys say, wow mom, I really really like it here, is words enough.

Thank Cathy and Jackie, we miss you! xo

La Plantation des Manguiers is situated in the tiny community of Bois Cachet (hidden wood). Once at the house it is difficult to believe that you are only minutes from the capital city of Castries, nestled as it is, amongst trees and foliage, notably Mango trees, hence the villa's name. With breath taking views over Castries out to Pigeon Island in the north and Martinique beyond, La Plantation des Manguiers is relaxing and tranquil with plenty of privacy. Castries is 5 minutes by car or bus (10 minutes walk to the nearest bus stop, all down hill!!) The white sand beach of Vigie with it's shady trees is 10-15 minutes from the villa and besides being great for a swim is also nice for a early morning or late afternoon walk. Reduit beach, a popular tourist area is approximately 30-40 minutes by car depending on the traffic. Pigeon Island is 5-10 minutes further north from here and offers beaches, walks and historical ruins, it is a great place for young children to run around.

Golf: Sandals Regency is only 5 minutes from the villa by car or a challenging 30 minute walk and offers a magnificent course with rolling hills and majestic fairways. A challenging nine-hole layout on 3,141 yards and par 33, this course features narrow fairways, making it suitable for skilled golfers, although it is also popular among beginners. There is also the St. Lucia Golf Club which is located on the northern tip of the island and is set within the scenic rolling hills of Cap Estates. The par-71 plays to 6685 yards/6113 metres and overlooks the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The course opened in 2001 and has since become one of the most demanding layouts in the Caribbean. The par 4 opening hole gets players’ attention right away with a fairway guarded on the right by a water hazard and trees and on the left with Out of Bounds. This course is approximately 40 mins from the villa by car depending on the traffic. If you require any further information on Golf in St Lucia, or bookings made in advance of your arrival Cathy will be pleased to help.
