Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday villa in Castries - Mango Plantation House
4 bedrooms, sleeps 8, 2 bathrooms, tropical garden,Ocean views

La Plantation des Manguiers (Mango Plantation) dates back over 100 years. It has all the hallmarks of a house built to make the most of the climate in years gone by before air conditioning. The windows sport big heavy shutters and there is no glass, allowing the balmy trade winds to flow through the house. The sheltered wrap around veranda stays cool from morning to night protecting the interior from the heat of the day. From this sleepy veranda you can relax whilst watching the world go by in the distance. The commanding view changes constantly, with sailing boats, small planes, cruise ships, the changing colors of the sea and the sky all offering entertainment. On a clear day Martinique can be seen, sometimes so clearly that you feel that you could swim there! The interior of the house is elegantly decorated and furnished in keeping with the 'plantation' style wherever possible and is comfortable and inviting whilst still offering all the mod-cons to ensure a relaxing stay.

The villa is owned by Chef Jacques and his wife Cathy. They also own Jacques Waterfront Dining Restaurant which recently re-located to Rodney Bay on the Waterfront at the entrance to the Marina and is open lunch and dinner every day and brunch on Sundays.

In addition, wedding receptions, birthday parties; in fact any celebration can be arranged at Jacques or catered to the villa. There is a private waterfront deck at the restaurant for larger groups, discounts to villa guests apply, contact Cathy.

Transportation : La Plantation des Manguiers is situated close to Castries the buses are regular. From Castries it is possible to catch buses to anywhere you want to go but be prepared for loud music and being a little squashed! The buses generally don't use air conditioning either, so it is hot but breezy with the windows open. Also please note that the walk to and from the house is for those who are of an above average fitness especially in the heat.

We live half way down a one way road with a bus stop at the top and the bottom. The walk to the bus stop from the house is all down hill. Coming back to the villa it is possible to get off the bus at the top of the hill and walk down the road to the drive way to the villa, however the drive is quite steep and would be challenging to those who do not walk on a regular basis especially in the heat. In this case I would recommend hiring a car. NB. Please contact Cathy for further information on special car hire deals.

Airport information: La Plantation des Manguiers is 21 miles or 1 hour 20 minutes by car from the international airport Hewanorra, which is situated in Vieux Fort in the south of the island. Helicopter transfers are available between Hewanorra and George FL Charles airport in Castries which is only 10-15 minutes by car from the villa. George FL Charles also has flights coming in from other Caribbean islands and flights that connect through Peurto Rico from the USA. Airport transfers are suggested and can be arranged, contact Cathy.

About Cathy Rioux

I was born in Nottingham in the U.K. and spent part of my childhood in Yorkshire, Guernsey in the Channel Islands and Oxforshire. I studied Hotel Management at Bournemouth University in the UK. I have travelled extensively since then working on a cruiseship, in Bahrain in the Middle East and Sudan in Africa, eventually settling in St Lucia 19 years ago with my husband Jacques who is French and our two children who were toddlers are the time and are now studying at University in Europe. We origionally came to St Lucia as Jacques was offered a job as the Executive Chef at Anse Chastanet Hotel in Soufriere. Four years later we decided to move to Castries and open our own restaurant. 'Jacques Waterfront Dining' was located not far from the house in Castries until July 2011 when it was destroyed by fire. Jacques re-opened on 11/11/11 in Rodney Bay in a fabulous waterfront location with view over the Marina.

Cathy Rioux purchased this villa in 1999
Why Cathy Rioux chose Castries

I will never forget the first time that I saw La Plantation des Manguiers (Mango Plantation for short). I was teaching English to children in a French school here in St Lucia. One December another teacher and I decided to teach the children Christmas Carols and organise a bus tour around each of the children's homes to sing to their newly learnt songs to their families. One of the children lived in Mango Plantation at the time. The bus driver dropped us at the bottom of the drive and we walked up the drive with the children. When we got to the top of the drive the view just took my breath away (or what was left of it after the steep climb) a lover of Caribbean architecture I instantly fell in love with the wooden Plantation house and said to my friend 'If I ever live in Castries, I want to live in this house' I never thought another thing about it until a few years later we met the family that was currrently renting in the house, we became good friends and we spent happy times there visitng them. As they were getting ready to leave St Lucia, Jacques and I were getting ready to open our restaurant in Castries and needless to say we jumped at the chance to rent the house. We lived in the house for 9 years and asked the owners if we could buy it several times but they were not ready to sell until 4 years ago. We absolutely love our house and we know that you will too!

What makes this villa unique

Plantation des Manguiers is a typical Caribbean Plantation style house. The foundations date back over 100 hundred years. The wooden part has been renovated over the years but by all accounts has been kept true to the origional style. The view is superb. We never get tired of sitting on the verandah and watching the ever changing sea and sky. We look out over the City of Castries to Pigeon Island beyond. On a clear day we can see Martinique so well, you would believe that you could swim there! The lights twinkle at night. We live only minutes from Castries but the house feels secluded, there are neighbours but we can't see them, and they can't see us.

Car: recommended

La Plantation des Manguiers is situated in the tiny community of Bois Cachet (hidden wood). Once at the house it is difficult to believe that you are only minutes from the capital city of Castries, nestled as it is, amongst trees and foliage, notably Mango trees, hence the villa's name. With breath taking views over Castries out to Pigeon Island in the north and Martinique beyond, La Plantation des Manguiers is relaxing and tranquil with plenty of privacy. Castries is 5 minutes by car or bus (10 minutes walk to the nearest bus stop, all down hill!!) The white sand beach of Vigie with it's shady trees is 10-15 minutes from the villa and besides being great for a swim is also nice for a early morning or late afternoon walk. Reduit beach, a popular tourist area is approximately 30-40 minutes by car depending on the traffic. Pigeon Island is 5-10 minutes further north from here and offers beaches, walks and historical ruins, it is a great place for young children to run around.

Golf: Sandals Regency is only 5 minutes from the villa by car or a challenging 30 minute walk and offers a magnificent course with rolling hills and majestic fairways. A challenging nine-hole layout on 3,141 yards and par 33, this course features narrow fairways, making it suitable for skilled golfers, although it is also popular among beginners. There is also the St. Lucia Golf Club which is located on the northern tip of the island and is set within the scenic rolling hills of Cap Estates. The par-71 plays to 6685 yards/6113 metres and overlooks the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The course opened in 2001 and has since become one of the most demanding layouts in the Caribbean. The par 4 opening hole gets players’ attention right away with a fairway guarded on the right by a water hazard and trees and on the left with Out of Bounds. This course is approximately 40 mins from the villa by car depending on the traffic. If you require any further information on Golf in St Lucia, or bookings made in advance of your arrival Cathy will be pleased to help.

Beautiful tropical vacation home

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 05 April 2013 Date of Stay: March 2013
We were intrigued by this house from the moment we discovered it online and it more than lived up to the reviews. We ate all of our meals on the lovely covered veranda where we could watch the city of Castries below, Pigeon Point to the north and the Caribbean Ocean beyond. At night the town was lit up and when it was clear we could see the lights of Martinique in the distance. We were regaled by choruses of cicadas and frogs as dusk descended. Cathy and Jacques welcomed us on our arrival and Cathy was a wealth of information on local sites. She was always available when we had questions. We enjoyed Jacques delicious food and a jazz trio(with steel drum/pans) at the Sunday morning brunch at their restaurant. Angie, the housekeeper, agreed to cook us traditional Caribbean fare and sent us to the bustling Saturday farmers' market with grocery lists for our meals. Glenroy, the gardener, taught my teenagers to climb a coconut tree and to drink coconut water from the freshly harvested fruit.
The house is a great stepping off point for visiting Soufriere, the Pitons and the volcano to the south, Dennery on the Atlantic side, and Rodney Bay and Pigeon Point to the north. We had the added convenience of renting Cathy and Jacques RAV for our sightseeing excursions.
We would love to stay at the Mango Plantation on our next trip to St. Lucia.

Private island property with beautiful gardens

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 11 March 2013 Date of Stay: February 2013
Mango Plantation is a very comfortable traditional home with amazing views of Castries town and harbour and beyond to the coastline. On a clear day we could see the island of Martinique. We watched the large cruise liners arriving each morning while enjoying breakfast on the large shaded terrace. The house has all the amenities required with the added benefit of being able to dine outside, listening to the sounds of nature and island life while watching numerous humming birds visiting the beautiful flowers in this picturesque garden. We really appreciated the large rooms with plenty of space to unwind. This was such a relaxing haven away from the hustle and bustle of a large impersonal resort. Our maid Angie was a fountain of information on local culture, places to visit and Caribbean food, she gave us advice on cooking local food, and I came home with some of her recipes, plus a supply of Caribbean spices that she had purchased on our behalf and preserved for us on request. We have already enjoyed the flavours of St Lucia on our return home, thanks Angie.

We were picked up at the airport by Stanley, their driver, who was waiting for us on arrival, no delays waiting for taxis or car hire, we were on the road within minutes. On the drive to Castries he gave us advice and information about the island particularly in relation to driving around St Lucia. We were welcomed by Cathy on arrival who gave us a tour of the house and a quick tour of Castries explaining the route to take in and around the town, this proved invaluable to us during our stay. We also hired Cathy's Toyota RAV 4 wheel drive, very comfortable with air conditioning, a good decision given some of the roads on the island and really good value for the duration of our stay.

Having read previous reviews we booked a table at Jacques Waterfront restaurant in Rodney Bay, and we were not disappointed. The Sunday Jazz brunch is amazing, we went back twice and also enjoyed delicious evening meals, definitely the best restaurant in St Lucia, not to be missed.

Having returned to the UK just a week ago today, its hard to adjust to rain, snow and thick sweaters again. We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to experience such a lovely traditional island home, while being within easy reach of so many of the attractions on this beautiful island.

Thank you Cathy and Jacques for looking after us so well, for your advice and, assistance always with a smile.

Best wishes Linda & Trevor.

Pearl of the Caribbean!

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 10 August 2012 Date of Stay: February 2012
We've been traveling a lot in the Caribbean but never before have we found a place to stay like this. The house is large and equipped with all amenities. You find yourself in a beautiful garden with bananas and other fruits fresh from the tree directly in your mouth. The views of Castries and the sea is breathtaking. House and garden are well maintained and the maid Madeline has an eye on everything. Cathy and Jacques are the perfect hosts. They took care of us from arrival when Cathy picked us up at the airport until the end of our stay when Jacques served us a delicious vegetarian dinner at their restaurant. Although the house is up on the hill shops, markets and restaurants can be reached by car in a few minutes (we did it almost every day on foot - a wise decision during peak hours in Castries). In order to explore the beauty of St. Lucia, it is advisable to hire Cathy's 4WD.
Thanks again to Cathy, Jacques, Madeline and Maya (the watchdog) making our stay on St. Lucia so unforgettable.
Owner's Response: Dear Maria,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review on your stay at Mango Plantation. We really appreciate it and it is so nice to know that you enjoyed your stay with us so much. We love our house and we are glad that you were happy and comfortable there! For the benefit of other travelers I would just like to point out that although Maya our beautiful German shepherd is the perfect hostess and loves children, please be assured that if you are not fond of dogs she does not need to stay at the house while you are there. Also although we offer a full maid service you are able to request that Madeline works part time or not at all if you prefer.

A perfect family holiday

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 03 July 2012 Date of Stay: January 2012
We are an Italian family, with 2 children. We spent 2 weeks holidays in this beautiful place and we would hightly recomand it to other families because it is safety for babies.
The house is very big and you can stay there with all the conforts up to 8 people.
The villa is perfectly located as it is slightly up in the hills, in the middle of tropical forest.
You can sleep listening natural sounds like tree frogs and caribbean birds.
It is always windy an it is a pleasure dinning in the patio looking the natural landscape.
Enough to be out of the crowd but still in 2 minutes by car you can be downtown.
The owners, Cathy and Jacques, wormly welcome us and they has been at our complete disposal for the entire vacation.
They are also owners of a wonderful restaurant called "Jacques Waterfront" in Rodney Bay Marina, where you can eat a fantastic franch-caribbean dishes.
A special mention also to Madelaine who has been a perfect carefull made.
The island is very friendly and there are a lots of incredible places and beaches to go.
To conclude we have been into a real paradise!

This was my very first trip to a Caribbean island and I have to say I couldn't have make a better choice!

Whenever I travel, I like to get to know the place and get in contact with the local culture, history, traditions and people. I've been looking for a quiet, large, private house and the Plantation Villa is all that and more. It is very homey, stylish and comfortable, it is equipped with everything you would normally need during your vacation, spotless clean and simply awesome. I loved my big bedroom with ensuite bathroom, the huge four poster bed where no mosquitos would ever bite you, being protected by a net all over. The other two bedrooms upstairs were just as nicely furnished, with lovely view over the bay that my friend enjoyed every morning.

We didn't spend too much time at the villa during the day, but the maid stopped by daily and took care of the house and our needs. The house has an alarm system, but we never felt the need to use it, the beautiful german shepperd, Maya, made us feel more than secure. She is such a lovely dog, I loved waking up in the mornings, open the window to my bedroom and have her greet me with such joy!

The location of the villa is ideal if you want to be close to town, restaurants, shops, etc., but yet private enough that you see no other house/neighbor from the yard. It is a hidden gem on the top of a hill, overlooking the bay and the sea, the views are mesmerizing at day and night. A 4x4 car is needed at all times during your stay there, but Cathy, the owner will be happy to help you find a rental.

As for the owners of the property, Cathy and Jaques Rioux, they are some of the nicest people I've met. Very welcoming, happy to share the information you'll need and Jaques is an exquisite french chef. His new restaurant, Jaques Waterfront Dinning in Rodney Bay area, is the perfect spot for a lovely al fresco dinner. I loved the Sunday brunch with live jazz music too!

Thank you for everything Cathy and Jaques, you've both made my vacation special. I'll be back sometime for a longer period in St. Lucia and for sure I will stay again at the Plantation Villa.
