PRIORY HOUSE

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Long Bennington - Priory House

Beautiful Grade II listed Georgian house in Lincolnshire

Overview:

Priory House is a country house with a difference! The imposing facade of this Grade II listed Georgian house conceals a fascinating interior, filled with light and colour and exotic excentricities. The creation of the owners, a sculptor and a fashion designer, it combines their obsessions to create a truly visual experience. There are two beautiful en-suite bedrooms in the main house and next to it in the brewhouse, an original Elizabethan Lincolnshire longhouse, offers romantic and unique additional accommodation.

The house is set in 1.5 acres of private grounds on the edge of the popular village of Long Bennington. The 2 properties together create a great weekend retreat for up to eight guests. It also provides a superb and somewhat quirky location for photography, fashion, film and TV. The owners love to share their home and make sure your stay is as relaxing or exciting as you want it to be.

Interior and grounds:

The imposing fascade conceals a fascinating interior, filled with light and colour and exotic excentricities. The property comprises two separate but neighbouring buildings, the Gerogian House and the Elizabethan longhouse.

The Longhouse: The Grade II listed Elizabethan Lincolnshire Longhouse sits next to the imposing stone Georgian Priory House, noted by TV appearances featuring its unusual interior.

Huge chestnut, oak and beech trees welcome you through the leafy wooded drive. Formerly the house would have provided ales to Priory House and its servants and it is now a romantic hideaway with a touch of baronial splendour and oodles of exotica. Relax in the flower filled conservatory. The spacious oak beamed living room combines the comfort ofcosy sofas with antique furniture and ethnic art. Curl up in front of the fire and the 42” plasma TV. A traditional Persian carpet softens the medieval style terracotta floor. A pretty little French chandelier illuminates the dining table and leopard skin curtains from the famous Biba’s in the 1970s provide extra warmth and privacy.

The Inglenook fireplace features a log burning stove. An intricately carved Indian screen covers one wall. A cast iron spiral staircase takes you to the minstrel’s gallery bedroom and a secret door in the screen leads to the kitchen and shower room. The Indian theme is continued in the designer built kitchen, incorporating an Edwardian brown glazed sink and a brand new Rangemaster cooker with ceramic hob. You will find everything you need including some basic provisions and condiments in the store cupboard. The shower room features a separate WC and the original decorated Victorian hand basin.

The Main House: A sweeping Georgian staircase leads to the two grand en-suite double bedrooms. Both light and sunny with south west facing windows overlooking the large front garden, surrounded by mature trees. The interior decorations are lavish and opulent but undenieably quirky! In the drawing room the giant Salvador Dali hand chairs and table mingle with enigmatic shop window manequins wearing Carole's beautiful vintage ballgowns.

You may choose a continental breakfast, a full hearty Lincolnshire breakfast or the special vegetarian feast in the fascinating dining room. In summer, weather permitting, we serve it on the sunny terrace overlooking the garden. In your room you will find a 32' TV with DVD player, tea and coffee making facilities and complimentary fruit and chocolates.

Guestbook comments from the manager
Our stay at the house was thoroughly relaxing. The house is intriguing and very interesting! A lovely bolthole to get away from it all for a few days. Carol and Roger made us feel most welcome. There are some lovely walks straight from your door.

Set on the edge of this popular village a mile from the A1 it is easily accessible from London or the North.

Our village is served extremely well on the Main Road by the Post Office and general store, Arnolds farm butchers and grocery store and we also have a well stocked newsagent. Sharrick's fish and chip shop next to the post office is the hub of the village at tea time. The three pubs also have restaurants. The Reindeer Inn is renowned and you will need to book, especially at the weekend.

Shopping in our two nearby towns is becoming increasingly trendy. Newark is 6 miles north of Long Bennington on the A1 and on the East Coast Main Line railway from Kings Cross. It is a pretty market town on the River Trent. It has quite a quite a few independent fashion boutiques, a lovely historic market square featuring the Town Hall and the Old Butter Market. The market days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Monday is the Flea market and Thursday the bric-a-brac day. Waitrose, Morrisons and Sainsbury???s are the main supermarkets. A tip for parking for the market – Morrisons car park.

A day out in Newark could comprise a peaceful trip on the river after visiting the ruined castle and tourist centre. There is a museum on Millgate and a variety of galleries. On Kirkgate you will find some carefully collected antiques from France and Peter and Gillian also have a very professional art gallery featuring successful internationally famous local artists. There is an abundance of tea shops and bars, cafes and restaurants, all waiting to make you welcome. The Palace is a flourishing theatre with an exciting and diverse programme.

Grantham is 7 miles to the south of Long Bennington and on the mainline railway from Kings Cross. It is also a market town on Saturdays, held around the Old Cross in Westgate. There is usually a farmers market. It has the usual range of national stores and the major supermarkets are Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury???s. Parking tip: Asda car park.

Lincoln, a Cathedral city and the County Town of Lincolnshire is only 20 miles away. Not to be missed. Aim for the cathedral and park in the cathedral car park. The movies the “Da Vinci Code” and “Elizabeth” were both filmed in Lincoln Cathedral. We have some of the props! They are reproductions of tombs in Westminster Abbey, now in my fashion studio here at Priory House. See them when you come for your wedding dress consultation.

Steep Hill is the quaint winding street leading up to the Cathedral. Tea shops, boutiques and old inns mingle together offering an eclectic experience of old world antiquarian bookshops and antiques. The ice cream shop by the Cathedral always has a queue. Nearby is a stunning new museum called The Collections featuring local Roman history.
