STUNNING ARCHITECTURE IN SCOTLAND'S GREATEST LANDSCAPE

Overview

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Achiltibiue - The Brochs of Coigach

Two luxury eco houses designed by an award-winning architect

The Brochs of Coigach have been awarded 5 stars by the Scottish Tourist Board and also the top gold level by the Green Tourism Business Scheme which is regarded as the World’s most credible sustainable tourism programme. The Brochs are works of art as much as the most luxurious holiday houses you can think of. Scàl's Broch is the perfect hide-away for two, though quite big in itself. The dining and sitting area is 8 metres long and 6 metres wide. The kitchen is slightly offset from this room. The bedroom measures 4 by 5 metres and the bathroom 3 by 6 metres.

Gille Buidhe's Broch accommodates within 143 square metres a huge open plan drawing room and dining area, a large kitchen, a further sitting room, 2 bedrooms, a large bathroom with bath, sauna and shower, and a second toilet. The largest room is 11 metres long and measures 10 metres across. Each window frames stunning views of the coastline. Original works by artists such as Edvard Munch and Tracey Emin adorn the walls.

The Brochs of Coigach have been shortlisted by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) for the 2011 Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award which is one of the most significant architecture awards in the world. We are silver members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and we are Scottish finalist of the Civic Trust Awards 2013, an international recognition given to projects of the highest quality design but only if they are judged to have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local community.

Red Magazine featured The Brochs of Coigach as Best in Britain for a Wilderness Getaway. Scottish Field described The Brochs as 'a modernist wonder echoing the Iron Age'. The leading German travel magazine MERIAN lists The Brochs as one of the 100 Best Dream Destinations for Two in the world.

AN IDEAL PLACE FOR AN AUTUMN OR WINTER BREAK: The Brochs of Coigach are especially suited for an autumn or winter break. Quite often, the winter light and the low northern sun shows the Scottish landscape at its best. The optical phenomena of nature are stunning. The panoramic windows of The Brochs of Coigach give you the feeling of being outdoors, though you are sitting in the utmost comfort of the observation and living room.

In autumn and wintertime, you can rent one or the other Brochs of Coigach on a daily basis like a hotel. This gives you a flexibility that you don't have with conventional holiday lets. The Brochs lend themselves for an extraordinary luxurious short break, for instance to celebrate a birthday, a wedding anniversary or another special occasion.

Kitchen and bathroom: The kitchens are built by Duncans of Grantown-on-Spey to a very high specification, with Siemens touch control hob and oven, 'whispering' AAA dishwasher, fridge freezer and Nova De-luxe Drawer Systems in Morello red cabinets.

The extremely spacious bathrooms are truly rooms in their own right, carefully designed so that their use is a pleasure in itself.

All linen and towels are provided. There are soap dispensers in the bathrooms.

You can buy from us eggs from our freely foraging rare breed hens and lamb from ancient breeds that we raise on our own fields - meat with a natural flavour that you wouldn't get anywhere else.

Details for holiday home Scàl's Broch, 1 Bedroom, Sleeps 2, 1 Bathroom

A one bedroom hide-away with a large kitchen and dining area, sitting and observation room, and a very large bath and sauna. In the back, there is a large utility and storage space. The building grows, as it were, out of a hillside and is encased in natural dry stone walls. Large panoramic windows bring about a feeling of being right in the middle of nature, though the inside provides the utmost luxury with underfloor heating, free wi-fi internet access and a Bose sound system. The view goes right across islands, the sea and into the mountains, uninterrupted by any other human habitation. The location warrants absolute privacy. There is an elegant Morso wood burning stove to watch the flames of a fire in the evenings. Original works by some of the best contemporary Scottish artists hang on the walls. There are also unusual antique displays in glass cabinets.

About Sheileagh or Reiner Luyken

My wife Sheileagh and I live on the Coigach peninsula since 1980, Sheileagh's family is from here. We raised four children and have four grandchildren, two of whom live not far away in another small Highland village. Sheileagh is an itinerant art teacher in various west coast primary schools, I am an feature writer, correspondent and columnist with the German weekly paper DIE ZEIT

Why Sheileagh or Reiner Luyken chose Achiltibiue

We built The Brochs between 2008 and 2011 after two years of planning. We've owned the land since thirty years, it was a beautiful site but it was extremely boggy and overgrown with brambles and bracken. Only in 2006 did we have an idea what to do with it. We built two houses that are really our personal dream houses. Nowhere else would you find houses right above the sea that are built like iron-age roundhouses. Externally, they are enveloped in drystone walls with a turf roof falling from the hillside over craggy outcrops to the ground below. Internally, The Brochs are not just modern and homely but also little museums featuring masterpieces of Scottish and Northern European artists. You will be surrounded on the outside by Scotland's greatest landscape and inside by some of Scotland's greatest art.

What makes this house unique

Just the other day a couple staying in one of the houses observed a sea eagle for two and a half hours hunting just a hundred yards away. Other guests watched a big pod of dolphins play in the sea while they had breakfast. Where else in the world can you get that?

Guestbook comments from the owner

Excellent place to stay, and what a stupendous view! So many mountains! The Enard Bay walk (No 5 in the Achiltibuie booklet) is excellent though a bit rough in places.

Also enjoyed a lovely walk up to the Falls of Kirkaig - splendid open hillsides with excellent views of the main peaks - go past the path down to the falls for a great view of Suilven from close up.

It's a steep climb up to Stac Pollaidh but the path is very good and it's worth the effort.

we enjoyed the wonderful scallops and prawns too!!

Unique luxury!!

  • 5 out of 5
Great vision to build two such properties, takes self catering holidays to a different level. It must score 10 out of 10 in all areas, attention to detail married to the design and ever changing views a sure recipe for success; would not hesitate in going back or to recommend to others.

Stunning Views, immaculate property

  • 5 out of 5
The chocolate cake on arrival was divine. It's the little touches that make the difference to a holiday. The property was immaculately clean and well organised. Having arrived a little later than expected it was black outside so not until the following morning did the panoramic view out of the front window really strike home. The property is hidden away in a secluded and remote part of the west coast of Scotland but well worth the drive. Highly recommended for a get-away-from-it-all retreat.

A wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 out of 5
The Broch was in an enviable position and made full use of the amazing ever changing scenery. The accommodation was light, more spacious than expected and extremely well furnished and equipped. We were given a good welcome from the owners including much appreciated home made cakes and freshly laid eggs! There was plenty of information about the local area walks and attractions, would highly recommend the climbing of Stac Polly, the view from the top is stunning. The two local restaurants were well worth a visit and the friendly and helpful service at the local shop really appreciated. We would highly recommend the accommodation and area for a perfectly peaceful and relaxing holiday

Fabulous place to stay

  • 5 out of 5
What an absolutely fabulous place to stay, if only we could be here longer. Congratulations to Reiner and Sheileagh for making such an unusual idea work so well.

The property is as good as it looks in the photos and was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The owners had provided some thoughtful touches such as fresh wild flowers and some lovely handmade soap in the bathroom. The fixtures and furnishings were all of high quality and the large bed was extremely comfortable.

Even though we stayed in July it was still cool in the evenings so on a couple of occasions we lit the wood burning stove (a supply of wood and firelights were provided), which along with the underfloor heating made the cottage lovely and cosy. It was absolute bliss just sitting in the peace and quiet looking at the wonderful view across the bay.

We spent most of our time touring around the area, the highlights being the road to Lochinver, the beautiful beaches at Durness and (although a long way) the Applecross Inn and the road back over the mountains to Lochcarron. We also took the boat trip to the Summer Isles from Achiltibuie which did not disappoint us.

We would thoroughly recommend this property and hope to return again sometime.

Polbain by Achiltibuie is one of a number of small hamlets on a peninsula that abuts from the mountainous Northwest cost of the Highlands into the Minch, a broad waterway between the Scottish mainland and the Outer Hebrides. It forms part of the Assynt and Coiogach National Scenic Area. The revered Scottish poet Norman MacCaig called this landscape 'masterless and intractable in any terms that are human.' It is one of the most unspoiled and outstandingly beautiful areas of Europe. One might observe a sea eagle hunting for fish. Porpoises and minke come this way. Occasionally, pods of bottle nose dolphins pass by, jumping in and out of the water as if for pure joy. Seals are always around. Despite its remote location, there is a Michelin star restaurant in the vicinity. There are opportunities for hill walking, climbing, sea kajaking, sailing and motor cuises. The Brochs of Coigach are located within four acres at the end of a private farm track.

Other Activities: sea kayaking
