Hope Thatch - what a gem!!!
My husband and I stayed in this gorgeous cottage for 2 weeks in December. It took us a long while to get the door unlocked, but got the keylock working better by giving it a clean. It was superb - the owners had thought of everything that we would need. A whole family could easily stay, there was plenty of room. Everything was good quality, and the bed was bliss. There were a couple of minor problems with the glass shower screen not working properly (so water went all over the floor) and a leak in the kitchen roof. (Hubby wanted to fix this, but the rainy weather meant that the roof didn't dry enough for a bit of silicone to set.) We tried to use the (pay)phone once, and lost our pound, but that could have been our fault as we weren't sure how to use it. The 2 pubs in the street were very friendly, and for us tourists, having the post office 2 minutes walk away was very helpful. The petrol station at the corner has a great supermarket, so there was no need to drive to Kingsbridge for groceries. The Kingsbridge Tourist Information Centre were extremely helpful. There is also a fabulous farmer's market in Kingsbridge. We chose Hope Thatch because of its quaint look, for being in a small village and for being a central location to touring Devon and Cornwall, and we were not disappointed! Even driving to Land's End for the day was fairly easy - about 3 hour's drive each way. We would say that having a car is a must, but parking at the cottage can be a problem. Often there would be another car parked in "our" spot, but the pub didn't mind us parking in their car park behind the pub. We would most definitely recommend Hope Thatch to families or couples - as long as you are physically able to climb rather steep stairs. It is a credit to the owners, and it was an absolute joy for us to stay there.
Owner's Response: We're glad that the cottage was enjoyed, we find it a cosy little gem and are pleased that our guests appreciated it. Not being there all of the time there can occasionally be a maintenance issue and we are grateful when our guests inform us of them so that they can be dealt with quickly - the caretaker's details are at the cottage and they are at hand to sort out any problems during our guests' stay. The problem with the kitchen roof was rectified immediately. The key was a spare one found in the old key lock safe, this has since been removed.
