About Sarah Means

We purchased the house in 2013 after falling in love with the Miller Beach Area. As Chicago residents we appreciate both the proximity to the city, and the small beach community atmosphere.

Gary wedding trip

  • 2 of 5

We had 9 stay and there was plenty of room for us and our pets. Having the pets be able to come with us was a big part of our choosing this rental. However, the bedroom at the end of the hall on the main floor didn't have working heat. The blinds in the basement bedrooms had panels missing and with homes very close by it didn't feel like there was privacy. The morning we wanted to get ready for our sons wedding, two people took barely warm showers and then there wasn't any hot water. The rest of us, having no choice, took ice cold showers. The parking in front of the house including the garage is supposed to fit 4 vehicles but not if everyone is driving an SUV. We squeezed one in the garage, which doesn't lock and 3 barely on the pad. For those of us not used to using coded door locks, there weren't any directions on how to lock up when we were leaving and that would've been helpful. On the up side, the contact people are very nice and happily answered all questions during the booking process. If the problems were fixed, we would probably be happy to recommend it but unfortunately, at this point, for the amount we paid for a 3 night stay, we would not recommend it.

Owner's Response: We are truly sorry these guests had problems with their stay. We appreciate feedback, and all reputable owners bend over backwards to make sure their guests have a great stay. Unfortunately, the renter never contacted us to let us know about any problems, and even the most conscientious owner cannot rectify issues that are not brought to their attention. We have local contacts that are about 15 minutes away, and can usually fix any problem the same day – we want to get them taken care of right away! In this case the temperature control on the hot water tank had been turned way down – and is a quick under a minute fix. Just to clarify, the garage door does lock, our welcome binder checklist explains how to operate keypad doors (just make sure they are shut all the way) and there is a small amount of auxiliary parking on the other side of the house from the garage we inform guests about in a pinch (the neighbor doesn’t appreciate us using it unless we have to). We have however reconfigured the shelves in the garage to accommodate larger vehicles, (18’ 8” of length now) as we were not aware of how tight it was for 2 SUVs. We are very proud of our beautiful home, the care & effort we put into maintaining it, and how we have furnished and stocked it to make sure your stay in the heart of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore area is as comfortable, carefree, and relaxed as possible. We are available 24 hours a day via phone and email, and are dedicated to answering questions and solving problems in real-time!

Great for a Wedding party.

  • 5 of 5

My fiancé (now husband) and I rented this home because we were getting married at nearby Marquette Park Pavilion . We both felt that it was a more reasonable option than booking multiple hotel rooms for all of the bridesmaids and ourselves for our wedding day festivities. We were also less than 5 minutes away from the venue, because there really isn't any decent hotels nearby. The Loon's Nest was able to comfortably host 4 aggressive Bridesmaids, 1 extremely patient Maid of Honor, 1 pretty little Flower Girl, 1 very handsome Ring Bearer, 1 emotional Bride and 1 very adorable shih tzu. The distinguished Groom stayed the evening of the wedding. We had space to roam. The home itself is beautiful and literally a block away from the lake. Everyone loved the home, the layout and raved about the location. There was a slight island feel throughout the community. The only setback about the home is the neighbor across the street. The limo had arrived on the day of the wedding and was blocking the neighbor. He was able to move out of her way, but that wasn't without a few choice words from her. I would totally recommend this home and look forward to this being our yearly anniversary rendezvous.

The Loon's Nest was perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

This was a very 'cool' place to stay. The pictures were spot on! The outlet to the beach was literally right there...we were able to run back as often as we needed. The house had everything you could need (but bring your own plastic for food at the beach!). With the beautifully decorated rooms, everyone was able to have their own. I just loved the artwork throughout the house. Everyone around us was extremely friendly. We love to spend the days on the beach and nights out to eat. We spent on rainy day at the outlet mall that is minutes away. I would highly recommend this place and hope to come back again! Probably one of the best VRBO rentals in Miller Beach we have stayed. Thank you!

GREAT

  • 5 of 5

We came to the Gary area to shoot a film and rented this house while we were working in the area. Our stay lasted about 2 weeks so we really got to great a feel of the house. Our contact for the listing was super on top of responses, even when he was traveling out of the country. The place was perfect for a large group with bedrooms on multiple levels and a really great kitchen. It was still chilly when we were staying there, but I can see how great it would be in warmer months in particular, as it is less than a block from the beach. We had a great stay!

Great Winter Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We really, really enjoyed our time at the beach house!!! Our first night there, even before unpacking, we went down to the beach. Even though it was cold, we really enjoyed watching the sunset on the beach. It was gorgeous, and amazingly, we were able to see the Chicago skyline in the distance! The kitchen had everything we needed to cook, including a blender to make smoothies!!!

The only criticisms I have are minor: It was hard to get the fireplace going, especially because we could not find any matches in the house. But, we used the gas stove, and with a lot of tries, we were finally able to get a good fire burning. Just a suggestion: it would be a good idea to have matches somewhere nearby the fireplace.

Also, on the website it says that are 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. However, the weekend we stayed there, there were only 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The basement was under construction, so that could be the reason there were less bedrooms and bathrooms available. However, the three bedrooms were lovely and accommodated us six ladies quite well. The living room was also very spacious and comfy.

We played games and watched movies most of the weekend. Though we brought our own games and movies, the house provided plenty. During the evening time, we went to the beach, around sunset time, and enjoyed the skyline and frozen sand.

Overall, it was a weekend of great relaxation! We have attached some pictures of our time in the house and on the beach. Enjoy!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words! We love the fireplace for winter stays, and truly admire your MacGyver skills at getting it going. We normally do have both a fireplace lighter and long matches available by the fireplace, but the previous guests must have used them and not replaced. We're now adding that to our cleaning lady's checklist to make sure there are some available, as well as adjusting our welcome booklet to ask that if you use them up, please replace them or let us know we are out. Always learning! As far as the size of the house, we had the listing at 3 bedrooms when you made your reservation, unsure of whether the painting, etc would be done by your stay for the 2 downstairs bedrooms. We changed the listing sometime after you reserved, then knowing that we just had one day of tying up loose ends after you checked out so we could offer the next inquiring guests a functioning 5 bedroom / 3 bedroom house. We hope you will consider a return visit and really do sincerely appreciate the feedback and helpful tidbits to future guests!

Perfect getaway house

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house to celebrate my husband's 30th birthday with some friends with a relaxing weekend away from the city. Being only 45 minutes from Chicago, the location was perfect: easy enough to reach even for just a few hours (for friends who couldn't stay long), but nestled in the small Miller Beach community for that special "getaway" feeling.

The house is really nice and comfortable, everything looks new. Being winter we couldn't enjoy the backyard or the sun deck much, but the living area is very spacious and it comfortably fit our group of about 10 for dinner. The lake is a block away and we enjoyed a nice walk on a snow-covered beach - and the fireplace was perfect to warm up afterwards! The only minor disappointment was that the jetted tub's drain plug wouldn't hold the water, making it impossible to take a nice long bath (or maybe we couldn't figure out how to seal it?).

The owner was very friendly and responsive, and worked with us to accommodate our requests. Extra bonus: they allow pets so we brought our cat!

Everyone had a great time and loved the house. Definitely recommended!
