Overview

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Torrey - The Green Duck

1 Bedroom, Private Beach, Private Road, Perfect Blend Of Modern And Rustic.

The Green Duck (formerly Yellow Finch House - before being painted green in '14) is simply an easy house to be in. A simple 1 bedroom house, with a sunroom (sleeper sofa pulls out to a Queen size bed for extra sleeping) ,a full kitchen and living room area with a small working bathroom (standup shower only). The house is equipped with washer and dryer! We like to keep all the screened windows open all summer and let the breeze keep the house cool, but there is an option for AC in the bedroom if you absolutely need it ($5/day option - just leave the cash on the table when you leave if you use it). There is working WIFI, DVD system, and over Dish Network TV channels, but save that for a rainy day because you'll be spending most of your time outside on the deck or down on the beach and/or swimming dock. There are 2 brand new kayaks for your use as well as some extra life jackets and inflatables. Plenty of deck chairs for sitting or laying out in the sun. A great place for bird watching and fishing right off the dock! A raised metal fire pit for those late night bonfires! This property is unique as we get both Sunrise on the lake and sunset over the hills of Fox Run Winery! One last thing - a charming and historic train runs next to the house. The train seems to have no set schedule, but seems to run very infrequently. Sometimes not coming for days on end and other times passing by up to 3 times in one day. We see this as part of the charm of the place- the train goes slow and the conductor will even sound the whistle for you if you wave at the train! All in all - this is the perfect house for a quiet, get-a-way - full of fishing, swimming, laying around, working on your new book, or a just a romantic rural experience! Ideal for 2 people, but can sleep up to 4 altogether. Oh, and if it gets too quiet - Historic Downtown Geneva is a 15 minute drive. There you can find gift shops, a cinema, The Smith Opera House, grocery stores, and a lakefront park. If none of that suits you, please feel free to use any or all of our 3 bicycles for a joy ride around our area - right in the heart of Amish Country!

*** This is a year round rental. We spent last winter here and made some great memories. I must say the place is stunning during all four seasons. We do ask the guests DO NOT use the wood stove (for safety reasons). The house is well insulated. There is electric heat (Thermostat), as well as some very advanced, high-end space heaters for the areas that don't heat up as well. If you would like to see some photos of the place in winter time, just ask and I will email them to you.

About jonathan pierce

I grew up in the finger lakes district and spent many memorable summers on Seneca Lake at my Grandfather's cabin. I moved away for work to Manhattan and after years of hard work, I was able to purchase my own cabin on the same lake as my grandfather - my own dream come true- my own paradise. Sadly, my work requires me to travel almost constantly, so I am excited to share this slice of heaven with you!

jonathan pierce purchased this house in 2012

Why jonathan pierce chose Torrey

I wanted to have a home on Seneca Lake, simply for nostalgic reasons. I missed those perfect quiet summers I spent up here as a kid - and when I am here - I do feel like a kid again. You have to stay here to really grasp what I'm saying! Also, living in Manhattan has really made me crave serenity. Here, you are literally surrounded by nature.

What makes this house unique

Incredible lake views, private 165 ft. beach, private road to house (shared with only two neighbors), the house is on the Finger Lakes Wine Trail. The backyard is flush with Fox Run's Riesling grape vines (pictured)! There is a working refrigerator in the boat house , so you don't have to leave the beach to enjoy a cold beer or some crisp white wine in the sun!

Paradise

My husband and I were here for a 4-day weekend in early October. Needed some time away from the kids to relax and reconnect. It was a perfect weekend.

Hard to know where to start. The location is divine. We arrived after dark and my jaw dropped when I stepped out onto the deck the next morning. The view of Seneca lake from the deck of the house is huge. It's so gorgeous and so quiet out there. You could not imagine a more perfect setting. We left the bedroom window wide open despite the chill, so we could fall asleep listening to the waves lapping the shore. (Thanks for having the huge down comforter in the linen closet!) In the other direction grape vines as far as you can see.

The cabin has absolutely everything you could need. Umbrellas for the one rainy morning. Binoculars so I could get a better view of the 6 ft long fish jumping out toward the middle of the lake (oh wait, my husband says that they were just waves). Stocked kitchen, good knives, nice wine glasses, great appliances, gorgeous washer and dryer (we are from NYC and get really excited about washer/dryers). The first day was warm and we had every window in the house open. The breeze just moved right through. The rest of the days were chilly and the combo of baseboard heaters and space heaters made the house cozy and toasty. There is even a separate thermostat in the bathroom if you just want to warm that up. We had about 50 cups of coffee and played three epic games of Scrabble at the table in the sun room. It was hard to motivate to leave the house. We did not have a chance to use the kayaks or the fire pit, but we will be back and will use them next time.

Jonathan recommended we try Ports Cafe which is just up the road. It was fantastic. In fact we ate there twice. GO THERE. But make a reservation. If you want a combo of great on-road (with zero cars) and off-road (nothing too crazy) biking look for the Interlaken trail in the Finger Lakes National Forest just NorthEast of Hector on the East side of the lake. We parked our car at the end of Ball Diamond Road and rode North from there. Made a huge loop and stopped for lunch at Dano's Heuriger along the way.

Excellent rating! Johnny, the owner, was incredibly responsive to all questions, etc. Beautiful setting of the cottage overlooking the water (especially nice to hear the waves hitting the shore in the morning), excellent dock on the water, everything worked great (shower, etc.) and the appliances seemed new and were high end. Access to the kayaks was a nice bonus as was having Watkins Glenn 25 min down the road. Quiet spot and the one neighbor I saw was super nice and helpful. Lake is spectacular.

Some great R&R

Some great R&R

Spent 4 nights in this rental with my wife. We were thrilled with how many comforts of home this cabin afforded us. Quiet and peaceful, for sure - From Kayaking on the lake, to cocktails on the dock, this was truly a restful vacation. Within a short drive are Outlet Shopping (for those rainy days), hiking at Watkins Glen State Park and dozens of wineries! Would highly recommend.

Relaxing Retreat

  • 5 out of 5
This is a nice place. Just as the owner described it. It's in a beautiful spot, very peaceful and relaxing with stunning views. We had glorious weather for our week long stay, and didn't need to venture too far to fill our days... the private beach and jetty, kayaks, decks, etc were all we needed.

Penn Yan and Geneva are close by for shopping and eating out, and there's a winery with craft beer on tap within walking distance. Who could ask for more.

I must confess to shouting at the complicated coffee maker when we first arrived. But it didn't take long to conquer it. Turns out it makes a nice cup of coffee. In fact, I'm now thinking of buying one for myself.

Jonathan was a great host, and always on hand to answer any questions. Thanks Jonathan.

A Great Quiet Getaway on the Finger Lakes

  • 5 out of 5
This is our 4th trip to the Finger Lakes and 4th different lake we have stayed at. This is by far the best and the most peaceful. Did some kayaking on the lake and walked along the north end of the lake in Geneva, both were enjoyable. Visited the National Womens Historical Park in Seneca Falls and the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. Many wineries to visit and of course Ports Café is highly recommended! Overall a nice peaceful getaway for a week! Jonathan is a great host and we kept in touch by email which was great! Thanks Jon!
