Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Tobago - Nature Retreat Tobago

Romantic

Nestled in the foothills of Tobago's Nature Forest Reserve, where walks through the old coco plantation are filled with lush flora and interesting fauna. A photographer´s dream with its private waterfall. A stroll to the beach takes 15mins.

Take a soak in the blue Caribbean Sea or just hang around the deck with the royal palms and roll into the coolest rainwater pool ever. You compete with the birds for first pick of the fruit that abound, bananas ,pawpaw, sapodilla, guava ,coconuts

Birdwatching, Trail walking: The island contains a wide variety of bird habitats, including, tropical rainforest, swamp forest,semi-deciduous forest, mangrove swamp, freshwater marshland, coastal fringes and savannah, as well as cultivated lands, these habitats are are not extensive and support distinct population of birds, such as parrots, cocorico`s, king of the woods, jacamas, together with the humming birds there are about 100 species that breed in Tobago. We are situated in the foothills of an ancient tropical rainforest and due to the abandon cocoa plantation there are many trails into the hills and to the beach which are well kept.

Deep sea diving: The Sisters Isles, a group of rocks just off shore, the famous brain coral located 30 mins away at Speyside, great snorkelling in our horse shoe bay of Parlatuvier and fishing off the jetty at night

deep sea fishing: A must for any angler worth his / her salt, its all there

Guestbook comments from the owner

My family including two kids, age 12 & 15, stayed at Rainbow Lodge for 3 weeks,Aug-Sept,2012.

We had a most fantastic time,Trevor ,the owner, was so welcoming and all his friends were a delight to meet.

We were taken into the Rainforest and fishing out at sea, all through Trev`s contacts.

The Lodge itself is beautiful, it is well maintained and the views are stunning, looking out to the Caribbean Sea across the rainforest .

We had some tasty meals out, to be honest we would quite happily have stayed at the villa and not travel out, as lying in the hammock by the pool could have been enough.

A walk down to the waterfall is just lovely through the old cocoa estate.

We would not hesitate to recommend this villa, which is away from the hustle and bustle of the the more touristy parts of the island, to any one thinking of a beautiful Caribbean ,Tobago holiday, we give Rainbow Lodge 5 stars.

We come away with wonderful memories and a wish to return.

Luxurious stay among birds and beautiful wildlife

  • 5 out of 5
Trevor Patience Villa Xanadu is Out of this World, up in the tree tops with the most amazing wildlife and view you can possibly imagine. Dinosaur sounding birds that wake you up in the morning, hummingbirds and parrots that join you for lunch and bats that swoop down around you as night falls.

We were warmly welcomed and Trevor was very helpful and made sure we had a good time and had everything we needed during our stay. The villa is really something special, very much like a spacious tree house but at the same time clean and safe. We had our two year old running around barefoot around the area and there were never any problems except for some hungry mosquitos. Kitchen, bathroom, and shower facilities were great. In both up and down stairs shower you could gaze out into the lush rainforest and also down towards the ocean. There is a lovely, big chill-out area with a refreshing rainwater pool. And the waterfall is just a 5-10 minute walk down a beautiful path. The closest beach was also lovely and barely any tourists around with two simple restaurants that served good food, manly fish.

We recommend staying here! Enjoy!

I would NEVER stay here again

  • 1 out of 5
I was so excited to book the Villa Xanadu based on the wonderful reviews. We arrived there for our 3 night stay and were initially enchanted. The view is stunning, the private infinity pool is lovely, and it felt like being in a treehouse. Trevor showed us around and then told us he would be leaving to visit a friend on another part of the island for several days. Well, things started to go south the first night when we were swarmed by mosquitoes, moths, locusts, and other insects as soon as dark set in. The living room is outside and there is literally no way to escape the bugs except under the mosquito net over the bed upstairs, as there are no window screens anywhere. There were also geckos pooping everywhere and bats darting in and out of the house after the bugs. We were preparing to take a dip in the pool when we heard someone crashing around farther down the hill and saw them wandering around with a flashlight. No idea who it was or what they were doing, but it put us on edge, especially when we went to bed and realized that there is absolutely NO way whatsoever to lock or secure the house. Every singe door and window is basically a sheet of plywood with the flimsiest of latches, and one entire wall of the downstairs is made of swinging panels that don't latch at all, so even if you closed every door and window anyone could walk right in, and it made it hard to relax and go to sleep. I hope it is safe up there, but after seeing someone wandering around the jungle with a flashlight earlier it creeped us out, especially since Trevor wasn't there and we didn't see the guard/groundskeeper he mentioned (Ranger) the entire trip. When we left to go out during the day we were extremely nervous about leaving any valuables, again, as there is absolutely no way to lock or secure the house. I am not an overly nervous traveler, but I am not at all familiar with the area and Trevor was away, so it felt weird to leave passports and money in what essentially amounts to an open air pavilion. Between the bugs, bats, geckos pooping everywhere, and the rat in kitchen I could not get out of there soon enough. Also, no drinking water is provided and Trevor told us to boil the tap water ourselves. I am okay with rustic but for that price I expect a lot more (like drinking water and basic security). I didn't feel safe or comfortable and would not stay there again nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Owner's Response: Oh Margret.
So sorry, I got back ,just after you left, had no idea of your ordeal.
Today I received a Super Host Reward from AirBnB.
A hi five from a 3 year old hanging out with her parents at Xanadu.
She was learning all about nature, while her mother took photos of a Locust, a humming bird and a butterfly on their sun deck, all the while drinking Chilled(boiled)rainwater.
The shock of your review, gave me a chance to reflect.
We have been blessed to be able to live here with doors wide open,
Safe and secure, even a flash light passing in the night is friendly like the fire flies flashing at night.
Your insecurity caused you to leave all the lights on, which invited the insects to come check you out.
I did tell you to leave on only the yellow lights, insects are not drawn to it.
The friendly geckos will eat all your invited guests and leave their appreciation.
The rat you saw is a local nocturnal Marsupal called a miniture Manicue, also drawn to lights at night.
Our 85% occupancy reflects our great value for money, and so does the previous 51 ,5 Star reviews.
Again I apologize Margret, for not being more available, it was a choice between you and my grand sons.
I promise you , if you every change your mind, I ,Trevor will hang around just for you,
My apologies also for Ranger, he own 4 boys needed attention.
From us all at the Retreat and for all you guests and future guests
We will look after you now even better and continue to make at least 98% of you happy.
Thanks Margret
I remain yours
Trevor

Tropical paradise

  • 5 out of 5
A beautiful property on a lovely part of the island. The view from the master bedroom is amazing, while lying in bed you can look down across the rain forest onto the bay below, it's quite a sight to wake-up to in the morning. The house itself is immaculate, the pictures do not do it justice. The infinity pool is a good size, deep and well maintained; there's an open air sun deck with outdoor lounge, TV, sofas and chaise longue. If you're feeling uninhibited you can shower in the open air, or alternatively the master bathroom has wide open views into the virgin rain forest.

Trevor was a fabulous host. He was very flexible in extending our stay for another night at short notice, and was on hand (his home is just a stone's throw away) to help with any little queries we had about local restaurants, etc.

Trevor currently has three rental properties. Xanadu sits at the top of the hill and has a commanding view down on the rest of the estate ("Patience"). All three of the rental properties look charming, but Xanadu was another league. Our 12 night vacation started at the 5* Trinidad Hyatt, and moved onto Coco Reef (reportedly the best beach resort on Tobago). Xanadu put the rest of the trip in the shade by quite a margin; when we arrived the wife likened it to Branson's Necker Island, it's that spectacular.

Car hire strongly recommended, the estate is relatively secluded and there's not a great deal in the immediate area. You also need to be prepared to be woken by the birds, as flocks of Cocorico (the national bird of Tobago) are frequent visitors to this area, and just like the people they represent can be fairly spirited in the small hours!

Perfect... just what we needed!!

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed for 2 weeks in October (sorry for the late review back to the rat race!!) We enjoyed everything about the experience. The house had everything we needed and more! It was very clean, plenty of towels and hot water were available. The swimming pool was just lovely and the perfect spot to chill and look at the stunning views over the sea or across the forest. Trevor and Ranger are great hosts and are there when needed but not at all intrusive. The waterfall was a pure delight and the walk was well worth it. Our visit was during the closed season but there was plenty of restaurants around the island to eat and they were all superb especially the amazing lobster at the Birdwatchers in Speyside! Be sure to visit the jetty in Paraltuvier and buy fresh fish or even better book one of the local fisherman to take you out and catch your dinner. A visit to this accommodation is a definite must I would visit again tomorrow given the opportunity!! Thank you for making our holiday so beautiful. Donna, Stuart, Dave and Rose.

Perfect Island Retreat!!!

  • 5 out of 5
This review is long overdue as I stayed in Trevor's (the host) lodge in April....It's now almost August, but the experience of staying in this majestic space has stayed with me!

There is quite a prelude to my arrival but to sum it up. I was expected to arrive at 6:00 p.m. and after getting lost and a flat tire didn't arrive until after midnight. Trevor the host, was even kind enough to come to the rescue when we got a flat tire in the middle of the night. Although we were really late, in distress and called him in the middle of the night Trevor was nothing but accommodating.

Once making it to the lodge I could not believe how beautiful and peaceful it was. The interior is rustic, clean and has everything you could need. Make sure to take a hike to the private waterfall!!!

I would highly recommend staying here. The surrounding villages are beautiful with quaint beaches and you really will feel as if you're in your own private paradise!

Looking to Return Soon!

Located 150m above sea level. Part of an old coco plantation, with its own private waterfall. Well kept trails into the rain forest, a bird watchers dream. Panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, the sisters rocks - offshore islands famous for deep sea diving and fishing. This sleepy fishing village nestled in the horseshoe bay of Parletuvier, with its night lit jetty, where lines are thrown late into the cool evening.

Imbi's shop caters for most needs. Sharon at the bar cooks daily lunch, fresh fish from the days catch.

To the west is the world famous beach at Englishman's Bay, Eula will feed you there.

Bloody Bay to the east, named for the savage naval battle fought between the English and French.

'The sea turned crimson and bodies washed up on Dead Mans Bay. There is a fabulous waterfall just in from the secluded beach.

Nearby Castara has a few restaurants an ATM machine and an internet cafe. We encourage you to ease back, rest, relax and enjoy. See you soon,
