We loved that holidays

  • 5 out of 5
When we arrived, we greeted the owners and show us this fantastic apartment. Lots of space, everything you need in a kitchen, a full fridge with welcome drinks and fruit. twice a week, came a friendly housekeeper and cleans every corner very accurat. the pool was very clean, and many days we spent explizid at Zumbrai's Beach shack on the beach here.
All during this 4 weeks was beautiful, exactly as written in the description. The owner shows us many beautiful places and give us some carpool to external places. When we asked for something, it happened immediately. I will recommend this apartment to all of my friends.

We also provide scooters/bicycles for your convenience. We are continuing to improve our accommodation and response sensitively to suggestions.

Our stay was disappointing

  • 2 out of 5
We have used Holiday Rentals on numerous occasions before without any problems.

During our two week stay at the apartment we experienced a few problems. This was mainly due to lack of preparation.
The air conditioning stopped working on the second day and took a day to rectify. Later on the main fuse in the electricity supply failed and took a day (again) to rectify. That time we were transferred to another apartment which fortunately was empty while the fuse was mended.

The toilet seat was broken and a towel rail kept coming off the wall. The lounge area had several lights not working. They gave us some bulbs but we could not fit them as the fittings were high and there were no steps.
On our first night the front door jammed and we could not re-enter the apartment. Eventually the security staff freed the door. That took an hour.
The description is not accurate. The apartment is not suitable for people of all ages. It is at the top of a three storey block with six flights of stairs to the apartment door. It would not be suitable for elderly people or anyone with walking difficulties. There is no lift.
The description states that the internet is available at extra cost. It is not available at any cost. We told to use the internet cafe in Varca town (half mile or one kilometre away). The connection in the internet cafe is very intermittent and slow but the staff are very friendly.
The description states that that beach is one kilometre away. It is more like two kilometres and the walk is not shaded and would be an energy sapping exercise as the daytime temperature is 35 deg C with 90% humidity. We were lucky, we had a car.
The description says that is a luxury penthouse. It is not. It is just a normal adequate holiday apartment.
Our stay in the apartment was not a complete disaster but we feel that with a bit more attention it could have been much better.

Owner's Response: We note with surprise that despite several recent high profile court cases in the UK with owners successfully suing blatantly libellous reviews such as the one posted above this practise still persists. We are a successful owner rental business who has advertised with Homeaway over 10 years providing quality accommodation at discounted prices and have built up a steady data base of repeat customers over the years and will not allow this review to deter us from continuing our work which provides local jobs for Goans. Anyone who has been to Goa knows how crowded the hotels and resorts are. They charge over a £1000 a week per person for the same stretch of beach that our accommodation resides on for a mere £195 an apartment with all the comforts of a home away from home.
Every effort is made to have all appliances checked by a qualified electrician before guests arrive but due to India's sporadic power surges this preparation can be undone within 24 hours! We note the positive comments about the response time. Again these guests came as the monsoon rains were ending so doors and windows are still swollen from the hardwood expanding - hence the sticking door. Regarding the apartment not being "luxurious" any real estate definition of luxury would include hard-wood bespoke hand-made kitchen and furniture, granite work-tops and marble floors with cathedral ceilings all of which this apartment boasts. The apartment is advertised as a penthouse on the third floor - hence three flights of stairs with cathedral ceilings and views to match.
This "worthy" couple failed to mention that while they specified their arrival time by car to our accommodation to be 2pm they actually arrived at 11:30 at night where my patient husband duly let them in. This might give one pause to consider their inability to judge distances - when they blatantly talk of the local village being "a mile" away and the beach even further - feel free to ask for the google maps to judge for yourself when inquiring to arbitrate for yourselves. The internet facility is available at the time of booking but cannot be asked for after arrival as it is outsourced to a third party. Finally western, middle class attitudes should be left in the west and reviews should take into account that local indigenous Goans rely on the tourist business for their living. Petty issues should not detract from the wonderful food and scenery Goa provides at a fraction of the cost of living elsewhere in the world

Great holiday in Goa for Christmas

  • 5 out of 5
This was our seventh visit to Goa and the best accommodation so far. The apartment was beautiful and services consistent and Amelia the housekeeper looked after us very well.
We liked the peaceful environment and the top quality beach which was a walk or bike ride away. The facilities included a gym and pool which was always clean. We had the best of both worlds as we could walk to the village for all daily needs and then to the beaches which were next to the top end hotels thus keeping them exclusive and very clean compared to other local beaches.
We were also impressed with the water-filter which was fitted to the mains water which meant we didnt have to keep buying bottled water. On occasion when we had a power cut the inverter back-up system clicked in and run the lights and the fans...until the power came back. We are used to staying in all sorts of accommodation in Goa but this was the best for the standard and cleanliness and we would recommend it to anyone. When we have stayed in hotels we have found they are very expensive in Goa and are very crowded with a mixture of local and international guests which occasionally caused problems especially in the pool. We experienced non of that in this small private complex with its consistently high standards (no litter anywhere).
The restaurants were great whether we ate in the hotels or on the beaches - where the seafood and continental foods were as widely available as the local curries. We also had access to a free taxi ride to and from the Zumbrai beach shack which we used through out our holiday. We also enjoyed the Garden Court restaurant which was within walking distance of the apartment and provided a great seafood fare at very reasonable prices. The owners provided a booklet with all the tel no. for taxi, scooters, doctor and emergency no. plus their own personal favourite places to see and things to do which proved very useful if you are only there few a week.
When we had a problem with the fridge-freezer the owners sent out a technician the same day (which believe me is unheard of in Goa)
We like self-catering as it enables us to cook if we like and have our own personal space without all the unwanted intrusions in a hotel and with this apartment we have excellent facilities at a fraction of the price.
We loved going to North Goa to anjuna market for the day but was glad that we booked our accommodation in the South as it has much better beaches and is much quieter than the North.

Our Holiday

  • 3 out of 5
Varca itself is not an ideal place to stay. There are no restaurants there. You either have to catch a bus into the next resort or catch a taxi which was not always easy to find one.
Although it says in the description that the appartment is in the beach belt, it took 45 minutes to walk to the beach or alternatively find a taxi.
Due to there being a large Church in the centre of Varca, every morning starting at 5.am bells were rang at 45 minute intervals.
The appartment was clean and maintained by a cleaner who came in twice a week. We had to report to her that the light bulbs were not working on the stair well. Although this was dealt with immediately, we felt that it was the owner's responsibility to regularly check the maintainance of the property.
It was very difficult to deciphen which switch was for what appliance as there were so many switches. It would have been useful to have the switches labelled.
We suffered a few power cuts-all at night time- which we know happens in Goa. However, a couple of the cuts were due to a shortage occuring within the building itself. After explaining to the owner on our mobile phone, that we had followed procedure before calling him, we felt he reluctantly came out to address the situation. Once realising the problem he called an electrician out who came immediately and fixed the problem. The last power cut happened on our last night- when we were busy using the washing machine, packing and generally preparing ourselves for our journey home. This lasted all night. We had to take soaking wet clothes out of the washing machine and wrap them up before packing them.
The pool is not very big. Each time we used it, it was very noisy due to the generator keeping the pool clean. However, the last 4 days of our holiday the pool was closed for cleaning. It would have been useful to have a toilet close by rather than having to go back up to your appartment.
We would not recommend this property to anyone.
We enjoyed going out on the bus to the other resorts where there were good restaurants, shops and interesting stalls.
One of the attractions we enjoyed was a day on a boat to observe the Dolphins and Birds on the river with an enjoyable lunch.

Owner's Response: Dear Brian & Trish - Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you didnt like Varca as its one of the top locations for Goa as it includes all the major 5* hotels and its 5* beaches.
Reading your review we have come to the conclusion that you were under the impression that you would be staying in a resort with Shops & Restaurants, but as you can clearly see on Holiday-Rentals this is a site for "Owner Rental Self Catering" on a private complex with shared pool. This ensures that there is no public access & 24 hr security is maintained.
Also the complex is conveniently located between Varca (with its shops/supermarkets/internet/PO/ATM etc. and the beach which is pretty exclusive and not over-crowded like Colva and Benaulim.
Anyone who has visited Goa knows that there are infrastructure problems with the water and electricity supplies - hence we have a separate water and power back-up installed in the apartment to ensure continuous supplies. Again to avoid any problems for some guests its better that they book into a resort or hotel (but then the price would be ten times the rate you paid)
The distance to the beach is clearly marked on the Goggle map provided on the advert and is clearly much nearer than your rather bias review claims.
Finally "the bells". Goa is a Catholic state and you cannot go more than a kilometre in any direction without encountering a chapel or church!!!! Many visitors actually come to Goa because it has these features and is a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures with English widely spoken. Again apologies for the power cuts but we are sure that the value of money that a self-catering holiday in Goa provides will see you back again in this great part of the world.
Best regards....Archie and Jane

But then, Goa is much more than just beaches and sea. It has alternative lifestyles and cultures which live side by side in an harmonious environment and are available to sample and enjoy. Much of the real Goa is in its interiors, both inside its buildings and in the jungles away from the coastal area. Legends from Hindu mythology credit Lord Parshuram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu with the creation of Goa. Over the centuries various dynasties have ruled Goa. Rashtrakutas, Kadambas, Silaharas, Chalukyas, Bahamani Muslims and most famously the Portuguese have been rulers of Goa and evidence of this is all around and in the most unexpected places. Having been the meeting point of races, religions and cultures both East and West over the centuries Goa has a multi-hued and distinctive lifestyle quite different from India.
