Since being built in 1880 numerous Senators, Congressmen, artists, and academics have all resided at what is now Hill Flats.
The building was previously used as a lecture hall and residence for scholars conducting research at the Library of Congress which is across the street.
Due to the buildings immediate proximity to national monuments, the National Park Service and Washington DC has designated Hill Flats a Historic building and has registered it under the Capitol Overlay and Fine Arts District. This designation ensures that all preservation is conducted under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol.
Hill Flats has been meticulously preserved while ensuring that it meets modern comforts.

Incredible architecture and historic charm in an unbeatable location.
This is a very comfortable and convenient apartment. The beds were very comfy and all appliances were new. Lots of places to eat including a small supermarket at the end of the street. Walking distance to many things. My 14 yr old daughter and husband hired bikes at the end of the street and navigated their way to many major sights and the nearby city bike depots . It only cost them the day deposit fee of $8 each. They had fun. My 13 yr old son and I walked to the hop on hop off bus and did the city tour (he wasn't well). The spy museum was fantastic-it is huge. The Smithsonian is amazing however the cafe is really a huge Macdonalds.
The owner of the property, Gene is very friendly guy who welcomed us with a lovely bottle of wine and answered any questions we had via email promptly. I would recommend this apartment.
Loved the place! Very clean and comfortable. I will stay there again for both work and family trips.
This condo is perfectly located within a few minutes walk of Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Smithsonians, Eastern market, fun places to eat and more. The unit is very quaint and clean. It was roomy enough for our family of four - we could spread out and each had his own bed. Gene, the owner, is very responsive and personable. He dropped by to check on us and brought a nice bottle of wine as a welcome to DC.
No need to look any longer. Book this condo if it's available.
Great location for visiting DC, right across the street from Library of Congress, walk to Mall, shopping & Restaurants. Metro too! Don't need to rent a car. Very reachable & responsive owner. Critical comments: 1. We could have used a snow shovel, we were there during early March snow storm. 2. Gene, You might want to check to loud creaking sound of the master bed. I'm an old man with a 2 hr bladder & when I got up to pee, the noise woke up my wife. We did enjoy our stay & would come back to this unit.
Although we were in DC for THE coldest week in forever in 2015, we had an excellent time. Walking distance to the National Mall and all its treasures. I would return whenever possible and stay here. One downside was the drafty window containing the air conditioning, but we were very creative in sealing it well. Then we got a space heater from our rentor, WELL DONE! Consider this rental, it is wonderful
