GREAT LITTLE HOUSE IN A GREAT LOCATION!

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in South Dakota - The Red House

Two-bedroom Home With Garage In Historic West Boulevard Neighborhood

This home will be a great headquarters for your Black Hills vacation. It features two small bedrooms with queen beds, and a comfortable couch for a fifth person to sleep on. The kitchen has all you will need for basic meals.

Enjoy your morning coffee while sitting on the covered front porch, and eat your meals on the porch or the side patio. Watch the many varieties of bees pollinate the xeriscaped front yard, and be sure to harvest some of the sage and thyme growing there for your meals. Lettuce, chard, kale and cilantro are currently harvestable in the greenhouse, and we are happy to cut a bag for you if you are interested.

Inside, the house is comfortable. It has a new furnace that keeps the winter at bay and three window a/c units that do a nice job keeping the house cool in the summer. The bathroom includes a bath/shower and a clothes washer and dryer.

The attached garage will fit one car and several bicycles, or several motorcycles if that’s your ride. You will appreciate it in the summer when afternoon thunderstorms can roll in, sometimes with hail.

We own the local fly-fishing shop, which Hans manages full time while Christine works as a physical therapist. Elsa, our 4-year-old, helps us with the gardening and keeps us moving.

Hans Stephenson purchased this house in 2008

We purchased this house because we love the neighborhood. Christine grew up in the West Boulevard area. It's a friendly neighborhood that is clean, has many beautiful historic homes, and is close to where we work and play.

You can't beat our location for access to festivities and cultural events in downtown city, and we also have great access to in-town trails for biking, hiking and running. Plus, all of the attractions you want to see in the Black Hills are within an hour drive.

We have enjoyed many dinners outside on the patio or on the front porch saying hello to neighbors as they walk by and enjoying the landscaping.

COZY HOUSE

  • 4 out of 5
My family and I enjoyed the house very much. It was very clean and only about 25 mins. From mount Rushmore, also it was very easy to find. We would definitely stay here again.

LOVED THIS ADORABLE HOUSE – PERFECT LOCATION FOR EVERYTHING

  • 5 out of 5
From the first moment we pulled up to the house, we were thrilled at how perfect it was for us. The flower gardens are beautiful and really make you feel at home. The garage was great to keep the car cool, it was quite warm most days. We loved the backyard garden filled with fresh kale, chard and lettuce. Being vegetarians, it can be challenging to eat out so we enjoyed cooking ourselves and what a treat to pick fresh greens and cook them and relax at home. The local Safeway markets have a nice selection of organic produce and a good amount of vegetarian selections. Z’Mariks was a great option to eat out, it’s a very casual Panera Bread type place with noodle and rice dishes that you can add tofu to. It’s best to pack lunches and snacks since eating out near the parks is mostly limited to burgers and pizzas. I think the national parks need to get a little healthier.

We saw so much while there…Mt Rushmore, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Rd, Wind Cave, Devil’s Tower, Wall Drug, Badlands, Hot Springs, Spearfish Canyon. TIP – be sure to ask at the visitor’s centers in the parks where the animals are that day. They usually know and we always saw them when we asked. So many buffalo, mountain goats, prairie dogs, burros….all with babies too, so cute! Don’t be afraid of the gravel roads, they are not bad at all and that’s where we saw most of the animals. Some really worthwhile tours for history buffs – Minuteman Missile site near Badlands and Ellsworth Airforce Base-Air & Space Museum(also has a missile silo you can go in and see).

Hans and Christine are super sweet and my husband was especially appreciative of the fly fishing location tips. He caught so many wild trout, he almost wants to move here!

QUIET, CLEAN, CONVENIENT

  • 5 out of 5
We loved staying in this vacation rental. The neighborhood is quiet and homey. The owners live nearby and are very accommodating. The house was spotless and convenient for trips to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and the Badlands. Even though there is only one bathroom, it is large enough for two people (unlike most motels). The laundry facilities are modern and soap is provided. Having a garage is a real blessing and above all, there were rhubarb bars on the kitchen table when we arrived...YUM.

GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD!

  • 5 out of 5
This property is a great budget-oriented choice. It isn't fancy, but it had all we needed and it was clean. Our large truck fit in the garage just fine, and the washer and dryer were both used a lot! The house is a perfect size for four people. We had six, but three of them were younger than six, so it worked ok for us.

We walked downtown for the weekly concert on Thursday evening. It is an easy walk for adults. I have visited Rapid City many times, but I had never been to this event before. I was amazed with the huge attendance!

The weather didn't cooperate, so we didn't get to Storybook Island. That was something I really wanted the children to see. We did ride the train in Hill City and that was a hit with the children. Reptile Gardens was ok, but no one's favorite. The drive on the wildlife loop in Custer State Park was a bust for seeing buffalo, but we did end up seeing three buffalo close up once we were off the loop!

I like eating downtown at Tally's, pizza at the Independent Ale House, and any Mexican food at Que Pasa. We drive to eat at Stonewall's Kitchen, the Colonial House (south on Mt. Rushmore and moving into a different building close by), and the Alpine Inn and Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City.

If I ever need accommodations for four people, I will definitely consider this rental again!

PERFECT BASE FOR THE BLACK HILLS, DEVILS TOWER AND BADLANDS

  • 4 out of 5
This is a nice place to stay, and offers far more privacy, convenience and atmosphere than a hotel. There were lots of fluffy towels, a laundry so you can pack light and wash when you need to. All the appliances worked well, including a lovely big screen TV for after a long day of sightseeing. (It would be helpful to have operating instructions for the TV remotes, and/or a list of local stations and their network affiliates). It is walking distance to the presidential statues and downtown, and near groceries and stores. Your car is undercover, and the garden and herbs are a nice addition. You can eat breakfast or dinner in, have coffee before heading out, or try some of the many nice restaurants close by. It is an easy day's tour to the south to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park (go on the Needles and Iron Ore roads), Two caves are also close by. On another day, head north to Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon (don't miss Roughlock falls), the town of Spearfish (the Bayleaf Café is nice), and even Devil's Tower. And it is also an easy day's jaunt to the spectacular Badlands to the east. A nice central location for a lovely area.

Our host was friendly and responded quickly to a gentle reminder about our security deposit - in his defense we were there a week before a huge snowfall.

GREAT EXPERIENCE!

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed in this cute "red house" for four nights. It was perfect for three of us. The rooms are neat and well organized. The beds are clean and comfortable. There are plenty of towels and other supplies at the bathroom and kitchen. The house is located at a very quite and safe street. We really enjoy the stay there.

This house is located just west of west boulevard in a very walkable, bike-able location. The house is one mile from downtown, one mile from two grocery stores, and four blocks from wilson park. The bike path that winds through rapid city is also just one mile away, which means you are minutes from great fishing, biking and running.

Rapid city has in the past few years created miles of great mountain biking, trail running and hiking trails right in town. This house is one mile from the m hill trails (hansen larson memorial park) and about four blocks from the nearest skyline drive trailhead.

Downtown rapid city offers year-round activities, including an artists' market and fountains in the summer and an ice skating rink in the winter. All of these activities are an easy 20-minute walk from this house.

Rapid city is a great headquarters for your black hills vacation. Head north to spearfish canyon or deadwood, south to custer state park, crazy horse and mount rushmore, or east to the badlands. From this house, you won't be more than an hour away from any attraction you choose.
