Located less than 1 mile from HWY 299. This little cottage is 750 sq ft. It is in a semi secluded, semi private, yet serene environment. The cottage is provided water by way of an old earth well fead by a natural spring. During the latter parts of the summer water tables do get low here and our wells run dry. We are now in what we call 'camping mode'. Meaning there is no longer running water at the cottage. To accomodate this time frame. We provide 3 eight and a half gallon water containers with nice pour spouts for doing dishes, 3 two and a half gallon solar shower bags, and 50-100 gallons of Mt. Shasta Spring water for drinking and flushing the water conservation toilet. Close by is Readings Creek only 10 min walking time, this creek flows right into the Trinity River and is a sight to see. For years I have walked the creek and picked berries while going down to the mouth of the river. Also, by traveling back to HWY 299, turning left over the bridge, you will immediately drive upon the Douglas City store. This road is Steiner Flat, from here you can access the DC campground which has a great spread of beach, running water, hot showers, and picnic tables. You can continue down Steiner Flat road until it comes to an end. The cool thing is-is every dirt road you see takes you to an access point of the river, where you'll find amazing water holes for swimming or fishing. Every dirt road circles back around to itself. Very easy driving, safe, all BLM sights. Now the house is completely furnished....it has 1 bedroom with a queen size bed. The bathroom is small, but is complete with bath and shower. There is a hidabed couch which sleeps two, Direct tv cable, a portable cd player, a fully equipped kitchen, a gas BBQ, patio furniture for four, a swamp cooler, wood burning stove, firewood, and two sleeping cots along with linens. Other than the cottage out of water and in camping mode this is a wonderful, clean place in an amazing area.... I thankyou so much for your interest!!
Hi, my name is Cheryl...I am a full time student at Shasta College preparing to go into the Registered Nurses Program. For the last 10 years I have been working with wild mustangs and caring for my mother who survived the largest brain aneurism rupture, in the worst location. I am honored to share she is a walking, talking miracle!! Along side of caring for her and wild horses and going to college. My only other dream to accomplish, is to share my home with others. Why, you might ask? Because, it is a life changing experience I might say! And I want to share with others what I have been blessed with....
Cheryl Harmon purchased this cottage in 1996
I bought this property because it was meant to be....I was 25 and ready to purchase my first home away from home (Monterey). I traveled searching through Tahoe and the Yosemite areas and found nothing that captured my heart. Then my aunt and uncle showed up in Monterey and they had just purchased a home in Trinity County. They encouraged me to come and visit. Missing the road to their home. I found myself pulled over in front of this little cottage for sale....It was just meant to be!! So, I bought my first home and started a cleaning/painting service and a shuttling service for fishing guides and local tourists.
As soon as you get out of your vehicle....You will hear the river....smell the cedar trees in the yard, see hundreds of doug firs, pines, cedars, and madrones covering the mountain and be greeted by an amazing amount of birds!!
My family of two adults and two kids stayed in this cottage about a week during the Christmas week in 2013. The cottage was not huge but big enough for us. My wife and I used the bedroom while my kids loved laying on the couch bed in the living room with a wood-burning stove. Due to the cozy size of the cottage, it got warmed up very quickly when a couple of firewoods were added upon coming back from a day journey in Lewiston and Weaverville areas. The cottage is just few miles away from Weaverville where you can find everything you need (groceries, bank, gas, etc). The Trinity river is right at the cottage, just some walks away. The owner of the cottage was very nice and caring about our stay. There were a plenty of firewoods stacked at the back of the cottage and we also used a well-cleaned grill for our steaks. Of course, all these are provided at almost a price for camping! Will come back for another time, possibly this summer to explore the Trinity Alps.
Needed a place to stay for 2 weeks for a conference nearby and was delighted to find and stay at the Cedar Tree Cottage. It was very quaint and serene hidden in the mountains - just what we needed to debrief in the evenings from the busy-ness of our days. We had a bit of a water obstacle that the owner met with flying colors... she couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. In fact, the whole experience was quite a fun adventure. In truth, I really can't relate to the woman who stayed just before us who apparently had a terrible go of it. I think life is really about your attitude and what you make of it. I'd definitely recommend staying here!
The whole idea was to have a family vacation on the river. The river is "just a hop and a skip" away BUT the owner did not mention that there is a BIG "no trespassing" sign between you and the river so it is more "a hop and a skip AND A DRIVE" to the river.
No running water (not even to flush the toilet). The place a few miles away where the owner said we could refill the jugs was unaccessible because of ongoing constructions. We had to fill the jugs with river water.
In the yard, not a single blade of green grass, in the house not even a table to have dinner inside. Listed as "sleeps 6" ... If you put 3 people in each bed (and they are NOT king size either!).
Electric wires nailed to the ground against any basic common-sense without even mentioning building or fire codes.
I am not even sure that it is legal to rent a place in such unsanitary and unsafe conditions.
I was tempted to turn around and leave if it was not hours away from where i live and if the Trinity River was not so beautiful.
It would have been much much better to go to the local camping ground which is on the river, has potable water, showers and flush toilets, and is just $10/night.
Me and my dogs very much enjoyed our stay this summer. I wish we could have stayed longer. The cottage was lovely, clean and very peaceful, and very close to the local store and close to many site seeing attractions. The yard is huge and fully fenced. The house has great energy. Cheryl was very accommodating. I look forward to booking another vacation here in the future.
Located 7 miles East of Weaverville and less than 2 miles from Steiner Flat Rd. From Steiner Flat you can access the Douglas City campground with a great spread of beach for fun and simple tubing for kids!! There are also many other Trinity River BLM access points off Stiener Flat Rd. with beautiful trails, fishing opportunities, and swim holes by just driving up to them....One access point in particular is named Dutton Creek....this stretch of the river is called, the 'Canyon Run' and is famously known for its world class, Chinook Salmon and Steel Head fishing!! Great for tubing and scenic river drifts as well....Close by the cottage is 'Readings Creek' it takes just about 10 min to walk from the cottage back up to Hwy 3 and just to the right a little ways is the Readings Creek bridge and from there you can access the creek. By following the creek you will find yourself at the Trinity river. Here at the mouth of the river is where the largest bar of gold was discovered during the GOLD RUSH era. It's an amazing place to hang out and relax.... Last but not least there is information provided at the house on fishing guides, shuttle services, trinity river access points, white water rafting, packing, golfing, bowling, museums, the winery, the fish hatchery, mountain biking, gold panning and dining. Here to help ensure you have a great time!!
