About this property

A delightful apartment in an old olive mill in Aups, Var, Provence, France

La Cascade takes its name from the small mill stream that tumbles down, right opposite the front door. It's part of an 18th century water-powered olive mill, Le Moulin de la Montre (spot the remains of the old sundial), and a small bridge leads to your private patio with wild fig and vines. You're only 10 min walk under the plane trees from the unspoilt village with its Wednesday and Saturday markets, bakeries, cafes and numerous exceptional restaurants. With 2 double bedrooms, a traditional kitchen, bathroom, separate WC and lounge (with an extra double sofa-bed), La Cascade enjoys a panoramic view over Aups towards the mountain ranges of Provence to the south. With many local festivals, a wide range of activities and delightful hill villages nearby it is ideally situated for exploring the beautiful, turquoise Lac St Croix (20 min by car) and the spectacular Gorge du Verdon (30 min). Parking at the Moulin for 2 or 4 wheels. Our normal change-over day is Saturday but there can sometimes be flexibility, so do ask.
Winter attractions include wild-boar and small game hunting and the renowned truffle market (every Thursday from end of Nov to early March) with the Fete des Truffes on the last Sunday in January.

A perfect place to revive for the next adventure
A quiet flat in a converted mill, with peaceful terrace and a wonderful, helpful host (by phone): I'd have stayed forever with very little encouragement. Everything you might need is to be found at La Cascade: a well equipped kitchen, bedrooms with views and/or water music, the fig-shaded terrace--and all just steps away from the village, and roads to dozens of places to visit and things to see.

Delightful stay at La Cascade!!!
Our week at La Cascade was a pure delight! We were fortunate to have our visit overlap with owners Michael and brother Chris who went above and beyond in every way imaginable, both before and after our arrival, to make our visit to Aups amazing. My cousin and I were on a sentimental journey to retrieve treasured memories of times we had spent in Aups and Moissac in our childhoods. Our American grandmother had owned farm property just outside of Aups since before WWII and she later invited each of her grandchildren to experience life in Provence during time spent living with her at Le Serre. Michael performed magic! He located several of our best friends and classmates from 60 years ago! He and Chris hosted a reunion party for us all on La Cascade's large front terrasse! Biggest SURPRISE and JOY imaginable ! I can truly say that every one of our days spent at La Cascade was delightful, from coffee on the small private terrace in the morning by the sweet waterfall, to relaxing with wine and BarBQ on the large "terrasse" in the evening, sunsets lighting the expansive view of the town and countryside below and beyond. Guests at La Cascade will find a fully- equipped kitchen, fit for gourmet chefs ---or casual meals. Hosts thoughtfully provided essentials for a dinner and breakfast upon arrival. The Provencal decor is both cheerful and comfortable. (Kitchen far more attractive than shown in some older photos!) Owners have provided a wealth of information about the surrounding areas and La Cascade's location is perfect both for walks into town and as a center point for exploring all of Provence. We loved the open-air markets on Saturday and Wednesday! Thank you Michael and Chris for making dreams come true!

Perfect base for exploring the Haut Var
We have visited Aups and the Haut Var many times but this was our first two-week stay in the village. La Cascade is perfectly situated on the edge of Aups, a five minute walk from the restaurants, cafes, shops and the fantastic twice-weekly market where we bought local produce to cook in the huge, well-equipped kitchen. We ate all our meals on the beautiful terrace by the mill stream, shaded by fig trees and grape vines. It was also a great place to relax after a long bike ride exploring the beautiful villages of the Haut Var or the dramatic scenery of the Verdon gorges and the lavender fields of the Valensole plateau. And later in the evening we would sit on the huge terrace in front of the owner's apartment watching the sunset. We loved our time at La Cascade and would definitely stay there again.

Spring Visit to La Cascade, in Aups
This was our first visit to this part of Provence and we were delighted to find a charming and busy market town, with open aspects, and extensive wooded areas for walking. The property, being a former Olive Mill, has very singular characteristics, in stout and traditional stone construction and the pleasing presence of the channeled water and the waterfall which gives its name. The interiors are ample, clean and well appointed, and there are multiple terraces, which enjoy the sun and shade as the day turns round. There are many similar villages in easy reach and the Gorge of Verdon is an essential day's excursion. We enjoyed our visit to Aups and our stay in La Cascade, very much, and would recommend the house to others.
