PRIVACY AND PASTORAL TRANQUILLITY BETWEEN CHABLIS AND BEAUNE

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Jeux les Bard - Les Lilas

Completely restored Burgundian farmhouse with magnificent views 2 BR, sleeps 4

Built in the early part of the 19th century, Les Lilas is a classic Burgundian stone farmhouse attached to a large converted barn, recently completely restored by the present owners.

Although totally modernised, Les Lilas retains the features and the feel of its origins. Situated on the edge of the village of Jeux les Bard, in a walled-in south-facing garden, the property offers privacy with unobstructed views across pasture land to the distant hills.

The spacious house, which can sleep 4 in 2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms (1 en-suite bedroom upstairs with private entrance; 1 bedroom with adjoining shower room on the ground floor) . Many charming features: flag-stone and red-tile flooring; massive beams in the open-plan barn and an elevated terrace.

Pastoral tranquillity between Chablis and Beaune: Built in the early part of the 19th century, Les Lilas is a classic Burgundian stone farmhouse attached to a large converted barn, recently completely restored by the present owners.

Many charming features: flag-stone and red-tile flooring; massive beams in the open-plan barn and an elevated terrace.

Lovely perennial gardens surround the house, and a vegetable garden provides salad and vegetables in season.

Les Lilas: The house is centred on a massive converted open-plan barn with fully equipped kitchen, dining area, comfortable lounge, bar and elevated corner library.

The west wall is entirely composed of French doors and windows, giving on to a furnished elevated terrace with unobstructed views across the fields.

The room features dramatic oak beams and a décor that, while modern, still reflects the 19th century origins of the property.

Off the main barn, in the old Burgundian stone farmhouse, is the main floor bedroom, with adjoining bathroom and laundry.

The second en suite bedroom is accessed by exterior stairs and has a private entrance from a balcony above the main terrace.

There is a small walled in flower garden in front of the house, with perennial beds surrounding the rest of the property. There is a substantial vegetable garden situated near the private parking area.

Markets and tourism: Point of interest:

• Sunday morning, there is a small street market in Semur en Auxois. There are food shops open there as well. There is also a larger market in Chablis, but is a longer drive.

The supermarkets in Montbard and Toutry are open Sunday morning. The village of Epoisses has basic necessities.

Otherwise, the best markets are:

• Avallon is 20 minutes away. The market is Saturday morning, though this is a good town to shop in general.

• Montbard is 20 minutes away. The market is Friday morning.

• Auxerre is an hour away. The markets are Friday and Saturday mornings.

• Dijon is an hour away. Market Tuesday and Saturday morning

TOURISM:

The area in general is very rich in history and culture.

• Chateau at Epoisses

• Semur en Auxois

• Avallon

• Dijon

• Beaune and the Wine Region

• Auxerre and the Chablis Wine Region

• The Burgundy Canal valley has many sites: Alesia; Flavigny; Abbey of Fontenay; Chateaux at Ancy le Franc and Tanlay.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Very nice view over the fields from the terrace, everything is clean, nice furniture, very impressive kitchen. We had a little bbq yesterday. We also went to Semur-en-Auxois which really surprised us. Tomorrow we are heading for some Beaune visiting. We have had a good time here. We were able to get some sightseeing during the day and relax on the terrace and the large living room during the evening. Also the kitchen was very pleasant…

Relaxing! Literally pastoral!

  • 5 out of 5
My wife & our six year old son stayed here at Les Lilas for 3 weeks. It was perfect for us. We took frequent walks in the surrounding countryside and became quite familiar with Epoisses and Samur en Auxois as these two villages are where we shopped for groceries. We truly enjoyed the antics of the cows and our son fed them fresh grass almost daily.
The house was very comfortable for us. We slept upstairs and our son slept downstairs and this was never a concern for us or our son. Internet access was a plus and there is a television but we never turned it on. It was a great home for exploring the sights in Burgundy but be advised you will need a car and to be prepared to do some driving. This was the only slight negative for us as during our previous stays in France there has been at least a boulangerie within walking distance. Epoisses is really close however and we became very friendly with the local merchants.
We saw a lot during our 3 weeks but some of our fondest memories are of just walking the local roads and fields, cooking & having dinner at the house and just relaxing and playing. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Dennis & Ellie, and we thank them for their hospitality, help and kindness.

Bucolic!

  • 5 out of 5
Beautifully restored farmhouse with a pastoral view at the edge of a tiny village. Upon arrival we were pleased to see that the interior and exterior looked exactly like the photos on the website. The house was well furnished, roomy beyond our needs and expectations, and very comfortable. The kitchen was well appointed and a joy to play in. The location was convenient for taking day trips in every direction. We never ran out of ideas for outings. If we had been luckier with the weather that week we would have thoroughly enjoyed spending (a lot) of time on the deck sipping wine and watching the cows!

Comfortable Burgundy Farm House

  • 5 out of 5
Les Lilas is a very comfortable, beautifully renovated farm house on the edge of the hamlet of Jeux les Bard, in an idealic rural setting. It is ideal for 2 couples as it has 2 separate bedrooms each with its own bathroom, one upstairs reached by a separate entrance, and the other on the ground floor. We had the upstairs room and it was wonderful each morning to pull back the curtains and see the neighbouring farmer's cows grazing in the adjacent field. The open plan living, dining and kitchen are well equipped with everything one could want.
The town of Epoisses, only a short drive away, has a good boulangerie and local cheese shop.
We drove each day through different parts of Burgundy where there is plenty to see and explore. Our favourites were the Abbey of Fontenay, and Alesia, a modern interpretive centre describing the Roman invasion of 58 BC, built next to uncovered Roman ruins of the period. The city of Beaune is a must, particularly Hotel Dieu, the medieval charity hospital. There are many stone, medieval villages to explore with their cobble stoned streets and squares. Chateauneuf, Noyers and Semur-en-Auxois were fun to wander around.
Burgundy is a delightful area to visit as it is not over-run with tourists, yet has plenty to offer in the way of sightseeing, beautiful food and of course the local wines, and Les Lilas is an excellent place to stay while you expolore.

Lovely stone built house with rural views.

A lovely peaceful week in Burgundy with our two teenage sons (who were delighted to discover waterskiing at a lake near Semur-en-Auxois, a beautiful old town just a 15 minute drive away). The best features of the house are the large open-plan living area with vaulted ceiling and the adjoining terrace overlooking the fields - venue for several happy barbecue evenings!

An excellent place to relax and unwind

  • 5 out of 5
This place is exactly as described. The photos are current and what is described is what you get - so refreshing. The open plan living area is neatly divided into different zones, for cooking, eating, tv watching (French satellite) and reading/relaxing. The outside terrace has a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. In fact it was hard to leave the terrace and go out exploring. The field opposite had cows and calves and provided constant entertainment. The bedrooms and shower rooms were spacious. The whole place was neat, clean and tidy. The owner, Dennis, provided clean linen at the end of the first week along with some freshly dug vegetables. On average about 3 cars a day passed the cottage. Often the only sound was the wind through the trees. I can't remember anywhere we have been in the UK recently where you don't hear the distance hum of traffic. Here you hear nothing except the sounds of the country. You need a car as the village doesn't have any facilities. Montbard has a supermarket, canal walks and the castle is worth the walk up to it. Semur is very attractive and has good places to eat - it also has supermarkets. Epoisse has a cheese shop and a castle. One of the castle guides speaks good English so it is worth going round the castle as well as the grounds. Also we would recommend Beaune for all things to do with wine. The wine museum clearly shows how important wine making was and still is to the region. Flavingy - a beautiful town. Do visit the sweet shop. It is also where some of the scenes of Chocolat were filmed. Noyers and Montreal are very pretty too. The garden at Lantilly is worth a look. The chateau at Tanlay is a fine example and worth seeing. Have not been to this region of France before - the inhabitants are very friendly and will strike up conversation with you. Everywhere is very attractive and you go through lovely village after lovely village. We really enjoyed our 2 weeks. If you want somewhere quiet and peaceful this is the place for you. It was quite warm during our stay - the ceiling fans in the open plan area were very effective. All in all a very decent property.

Great venue for friends, and wine, and food!

  • 5 out of 5
We enjoyed a lovely 2 week stay at Les Lilas at the beginning of June. Dennis and Ellie were very helpful in setting us up before we arrived and making sure everything was in place after we got there. This is a lovely farmhouse to escape to and settle into a historic relaxing space that still contains all of the modern conveniences. The rooms are spacious and bright and the countryside views are exceptional. The kitchen is large enough that 4 adults could be working on meals without getting in each others’ way. Jeux les Bard is convenient, close enough to Semur, Epoisses and Flavigny to get more historical perspective and to pick up a few things from the markets. We also enjoyed morning runs through the pasturelands to Viserny and Genay. We were able to use the barbecue, gas stovetop and oven to eat in for much of our stay. It is a reasonably short drive to Beaune and to Dijon so that we could attend wine tastings and walking tours there and at all points in between (with a little pre-planning from North America). Even if you are not interested in cooking at the farmhouse all the time, the Pomme d’Or in Epoisses offers an excellent close venue to catch a quick meal and Le Marronnier in Buffon is great if you want to celebrate a little bit. Both are about 20 mins away by car. All in all, an excellent time for 4 Atlantic Canadians, kicking back and enjoying the countryside. Thanks Dennis and Ellie for all of your hospitality. Watch out, we’ll be back!!

The village of Jeux les Bard in Burgundy is situated about 300km south-east of Paris. It is about an hour by car from either Dijon or Beaune (by auto-route) and about a half-hour from Chablis cross-country.

It is convenient to 3 interesting towns, each about 15 minutes drive from Jeux. Semur-en Auxois is a fortified medieval gem with good shopping and restaurants. Montbard is located in the Burgundy Canal valley and has many interesting sites nearby (notably the Abbey at Fontenay, Flavigny-sur Ozerain and Alesia, as well as many of Burgundy’s best chateaux). The TGV stops 8 times a day at the Montbard station, with Paris 1h05 away, and London (via Lille and the Eurostar) or EuroDisney is an easy morning trip. Avallon is about 20 minutes away, but boasts a wonderful market and many excellent shops and restaurants. Access to the Morvan regional park is easiest via Avallon.

  • As is typical in Burgundian farmhouses, the upstairs en-suite bedroom is accessed by an outside stair, hence it has a private entrance. Because of the stair, however, we do not recommend this room for children. High-beamed ceilings and built-in cabinets create an open spacious feel. The downstairs bedroom and bath can be partitioned off to create an en-suite, or the bathroom can be made available to general use. If used en-suite, a foyer opens on to a small private terrace.
