Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Guilford - Peddlars Farm

4 bedroom 3700 square foot house on 4 acres close to hiking, biking and beach

Experience the charm of historic Guilford CT in colonial style. The Benjamin Fowler house at Peddlars Farm is an authentic 1752 Saltbox colonial decorated with charming antiques. The four bedroom house easily sleeps 6 and features a dining room, living room, large eat in kitchen and spacious screen in porch. You will be amazed at the large stone fireplace and wide board floors throughout the house. Bring your best recipe and cook in the beehive ovens. There are two bathrooms, both recently redone and the kitchen includes dishes, cooking pots and glasses. Bed linens are included, you bring your own towels. The master bedroom features a 19th century queen size sleigh bed with a 1780 chippendale dresser. The second bedroom has two antique full size beds. A lover of antique houses. I am a native of Guilford Ct and I purchased this antique home in 2006 as a second home for my family. When a small farm with another antique house became available, we decided to keep this house and let others enjoy an antique house as much as we did.

Bill Butterly purchased this farmhouse in 2006

The Benjamin Fowler house is one of the ten oldest houses in Guilford CT, being built as an integral leanto Saltbox center chimney colonial. The integrity of its historic structure and charm of its massive fireplaces along with its pastoral setting made me fall in love with one of the nicest houses in Guilford CT.

Excellent Stay

  • 5 out of 5
Staying in this house was everything that I'd hoped for. We (group of 15) stayed here for two nights very comfortably. There were plenty of beds and couches to go around, and for those of us who did need sleeping bags (it says it sleeps up to 14 but realistically only about 8 or 9 can get beds) there was ample floor space and plenty of clean areas.

The house got rather cold at night but some rooms had heating which was perfectly effective and kept up with the charm of the house. As well, all electronics, like TV and wi-fi, and electric appliances, like the fridge and the microwave, were well-kept and in great condition. There were plenty of plates, mugs, bowls and utensils, and the hot water in the showers was excellent!

All in all I would recommend this house again to anyone who wants a comfortable and interesting place to stay, whether it be two nights or two weeks!

Great Stay

  • 5 out of 5
We had a wonderful time in this historic house. Just about anywhere else a place like this would be a museum. I mean, it's older than the United States! The turnpike is pretty close, but there are enough trees so the noise isn't that much of an issue. It's very spacious and has a very authentic feel to it, but with all the convenience of a modern stove, dishwasher, etc.

Profoundly dissatisfied

  • 1 out of 5
We have travelled extensively and often rented homes. This is the first negative review we have ever written. The owner was very friendly and helpful on the phone when we were initially booking and making arrangements. Our experience after we arrived was quite a contrast.

We emailed the owner after our arrival late in the evening to let him know we were disappointed and not happy with the cleanliness of the place and the fact that there were not enough dishes for our group of eight, despite having confirmed with him by phone prior to arrival that the property was well equipped for our party of eight (two families of four, travelling together). His singular emailed reply was the following, "Feel free to leave. I personally cleaned the house for three hours today so I doubt I could ever meet your expectations."

Despite our requests, we never heard again from the owner after this and were left to fend for ourselves. We spent time doing our own cleaning, washing down dried grime that had dripped down the cupboard fronts, cleaning hair found in the fridge, scrubbing toilet bowls, etc. This was not difficult but also not what we had imagined for a vacation activity. Kitchen was not supplied with needed dishes for eight and owner never remedied this despite our requests. Sufficient plates, but only 6 mugs and 5 bowls. Even after cleaning, other than eating breakfast in shifts and washing bowls in between, we elected to eat out rather than cooking meals at the home as we had originally planned. Fortunately, many wonderful places to eat nearby.

The yard and surrounding area were very beautiful & the historic experience of staying in a colonial home would have been wonderful if it were not for the above. We especially loved the screened porch with a view of the yard and nearby barn.

Additionally, I expect it is a simple error that the home is listed as wheelchair accessible on the website since this is clearly not the case with multiple steps or stairs and tight corners as would be expected in such an historic home. The cold water tap in the tiny second floor bathroom was also not functioning.

I anticipate that there may be a final owner reply to this review but this is at least a brief summary of our experience. I also imagine it could be a very different experience for others with the above issues easily resolved and more appropriate and helpful responses and actions from the owner when potential difficulties or disappointments are encountered.

We had a wonderful stay. We were in the area for a long weekend to visit extended family and this was the perfect spot to retire to every night. We had more than enough beds for 8 of us one night (6 most nights). The screened-in porch (not mentioned in the listing) was great for coffee in the mornings and winding down in the evenings. We were also pleasantly surprised that this old farmhouse was retrofitted with AC, which kept us sufficiently cool. Be prepared for rustic living, but for the price, this place can't be beat.
