Eating out: Dining in Neum will always be a slight bit less expensive than Croatia but one gets the same quality seafood. There are also plenty of choices for less expensive Italian meals and pizza places. Traditional restaurants offer excellent menu’s of Herzegovina meals including; sarma, begova corba (chicken stew), teletina (veal), filled peppers, sitni cevap (veal stew), and grilled lamb and pork just to name a few. Both the traditional and Dalmatian restaurants specialize in fresh and saltwater fish dishes. The local trout, pastrmka, is always a good buy. Do try a tasty platter of Herzegovina cheese (livanksi, iz mijeha, kozija), proscutto with some fine red wines from the region. Service in Neum is good and tipping is normal, but not required. An average sit down meal with drinks generally ranges from 6-12 Euros.
Activities: From Neum you can jump on the excursion boats that travel up and down the Adriatic coastline. Scuba diving is relatively inexpensive compared to Croatia and other western Mediterranean countries. Jet skis and water skiing are also organized from beachside rental outlets. Dubrovnik is only an hour's drive from Neum, and the peninsula of Peljesac is a stone's throw away. From Orebic on Peljesac you can catch a ferry to the beautiful island of Korcula.
In the hinterland behind Neum is the village of Hutovo and the ancient ruins of Hadzibegova kula Fortress, used by the Ottomans to defend their western front. The holy site of Svetiste Kraljica mira is a shrine to the Queen of Peace in Hrasno. It has more local significance but those who have come on a pilgrimage often pay a visit to this tiny hinterland shrine. Hutovo blato, Stolac, Mostar and Medugorje are all within an hour's drive of Neum for day trips.
The Adriatic Sea from Split to Dubrovnik is gorgeous, very clean, and includes 22km of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The closed bay at Neum is protected from the strong open sea winds by the Peljesac Peninsula, and wonderfully calm.
During Yugoslav times it was an isolated retreat for the communist elite. Tourism has increased in this place and scuba-diving, para-sailing, boating and jet skiing can all readily be arranged in most places around the town. It all costs a little less than what it costs in Croatia.
This town is located on the southern coast of the eastern Adriatic, at the very outskirts of Dubrovnik.
The sea abounds in all kinds of fish and sea-shells, while the Mediterranean, with the specific flora and fauna spreads throughout the area enabling the population to grow olives, figs and wine.
Neum hinterland is well-known for archaeological and historical sights as well as numerous karst caves out of which Vjetrenica in Popovo polje is the most distinguished.
