Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Stranraer - Stables Cottage, Corsewall

Two Bedroom Cottage awarded 4 stars by VisitScotland close to the shore

Located in the heart of Corsewall Estate, seven miles from Stranraer, surrounded by historic woodland and overlooking a traditional 19th century walled kitchen garden, the recently restored Stables cottage is an ideal base for exploring Wigtownshire and rest of Dumfries & Galloway.

Stables Cottage, located on the first floor, has a spacious, modern open plan sitting room with kitchen and dining area with a traditional log burning stove as a focus for relaxing and comfy sofas and arm chairs.

The cottage has a double bedroom with a traditional style cast iron king size bed over looking the old walled garden. There is a twin bedroom with ivory traditional style cast iron beds. The bathroom has a bath with an overhead chrome shower.

Stables Cottage is equipped with a flat screen television, Freeview Box, DVD player; iPod radio/docking station and WiFi, a selection of board games, books and classic films. The cottage has its own private garden, with garden furniture a swing ball set and a barbecue. There is also a large trampoline, with a safety enclosure, a great new climbing frame and a Wendy house in the Estate gardens for children to use.

Corsewall Estate has three pretty beaches on Loch Ryan - Boat Bank, Lady Bay and Port Beg - that Stables Cottage guests can explore. A pretty walk down one of the drives will take you to Boat Bank, which is the nearest one to the cottage. Both Boat Bank and Lady Bay are wonderful spots if you like collecting shells or pebbles - oyster shells and mussels to cowries and scallop shells never fail to disappoint. Bird watching down on the shores of Loch Ryan or in the woods is second to none.

Port Beg is a pretty bay, pebbly down to the waterline and then sandy in the sea - ideal for paddling and swimming. There are lots of rock pools - so a bucket and a net is a must for the kids! There's a grassy area for picnics and barbies and the views out to sea, with Ailsa Craig in the foreground and the Isle of Arran in the distance, are simply magical.

The gardens and lawns provide a secure environment for children and it is a wonderful location for them to enjoy the great outdoors and play good old fashioned games from hide and seek and football to kick the can. The lawns are great for running about, and there are lots of little banks, which are ideal for rolling down. A stream runs through the estate, so with two stone bridges and an endless supply of sticks, Pooh sticks is always a fun game for children to enjoy.

And families are welcome to set up camp in the woods beside the lawns - we provide the tent, roll mats, wood and campfire location - guests just need to bring their sleeping bags! And if it all gets too much for some younger members of the camping party, they can always retreat back to home comforts indoors.

Located in over 20 acres of gardens and woodland adjacent to Stables Cottage, there are lots of tracks around the estate you can enjoy - on foot or by bike. This also makes it a great holiday for dogs too! In late January and February, the woods feature charming drifts of snowdrops followed by daffodils and in April and May the hue turns to purple with acres of bluebells. There is colour in the gardens almost all the way through the year starting with camellia from January to March, followed by a riot of colour in April and May as the rhododendrons and azaleas come into flower. The autumn sees the hydrangeas providing colour all the way through to November.

There is oodles of wildlife to spot – from roe deer and hares to barn owls, woodpeckers and most importantly, this area is one of the last bastions of the red squirrel. The cottage comes complete with its own red squirrel feeder – where you can watch any number of cheeky red squirrels feeding ferociously all day. Our record spotted at the feeders is currently six.

The Blue Peter pub in the village of Kirkcolm is 3/4s of a mile away. Under new ownership, the pub has good pub grub and also does great take away fish and chips - a 'must eat' while on holiday by the coast!

We have a second cottage, Garden Cottage, about 50 metres from Stables Cottage, which sleeps 6 - so groups of up to 10 can easily be accommodated in both locations.

Fantastic Cottage

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed in Stables Cottage for a week at the end of October and we had a wonderful time. The cottage is absolutely beautiful, so warm and cosy but modern at the same time. Kate and Angus had made us feel very welcome by leaving us bread, milk, jam and biscuits which was lovely. They even left our children halloween treats which went down very well with our daughters.

The grounds were fantastic and so big, you could have a lovely walk and not actually leave the grounds - our dog was in his element. Our children were able to use the trampoline, zip wire and climbing frame whenever they wanted to, which really made their holiday.

The area was lovely with having the sea so close by and Port Patrick was great. We would definitely return to this cottage and local area. We had a lovely, relaxing week. Thank you to Angus and Kate who couldn't have been more helpful and friendly.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for choosing Stables Cottage - it was lovely to meet you all and great to see the girls making full use of the trampoline and zip wire. And a big thank you for your very kind words. I do hope we'll be able to welcome you back to the cottage in the not too distant future.

All expectations exceeded

  • 5 out of 5
We can say only the best about our stay at Stable Cottage. The apartment was so beautiful and lovely furnished. Everything fitted together and we felt so comfortable and home. The arrangement of the Cottage is at very high standard, everything was new and clean. We didn´t miss nothing. The fotos in the internet were equivalent to the real apartment. Our expectations were exceeded.
The owners were very kind and always keen to help us in any case. They provided us regularly with fire wood and any tip we needed for walks or shopping opportunities. They were always contactable and we felt absolutely in good hands.
In any case we would recommend the Cottage to friends and relatives.

The Stables Corsewall Estate

  • 5 out of 5
We had a wonderful 3 night stay at the Stables. The accommodation is wonderful - homely but with an edge of luxury especially the bed and bedding. I could have stayed in bed the whole weekend. We were met by Angus who showed us round and explained how we were welcome to walk over the estate and not to feel shy about asking for anything we needed. There was a very adequate welcome pack which is unusual nowadays and we could easily have brought no food and coped until the next day after breakfast - lovely. We knew the surrounding area quite well but the family had provided good guides to activities in the immediate area and beyond. The flat is dog friendly which is a must for us as our dog goes with us on all our holidays. He was as warmly welcomed as we were and I hope that we will have occasion to have another short break there as it was absolutely delightful. I just wanted to refit out my house when I came home. Thank you again Angus and Kate.

heaven on earth

  • 5 out of 5
where do i start with this gorgeous place ? first of all we had a 95 mile drive down the coast road which was made very easy because of the scenery,on entering the estate we were dumbstruck with the amount of colourful flowers scattered all over the place. on arriving at the main house we were met by the lovely owners, angus, kate and family who showed us to our fantastic stable cottage and explained everything we needed to know about about our surroundings for the weekend, angus went through all the does with us (THERE WASNT ANY DONTS),we were told to walk where we wanted treat the place like our own and pick as many flowers as we wanted .there are some fantastic walks, on our first walk our son lee seen his first real hedgehog just wander right in front of him about 30 feet from the cottage, and roe deer actually walking around in the grounds.the cottage was well equipped with everything we needed, spotlessly clean, tidy, and talk about comfy beds, i have back problems and normally cant sleep to good in strange beds, but just put up with it , this wasnt the case with stables cottage, i slept like a baby and woke the next day feeling refreshed and ready for another day in paradise , my wife barbara loved the peace and quiet and our son lee loved , well everything, this wonderful family thought of everything , there was a childrens playhouse in the garden, a swing , trampoline, even a family size tent in the woods with sleeping bags and camping equipment if you really wanted to get close to nature, angus and kate recommended a few places to eat which were spot on , all in all we had a fantastic time and we couldnt speak highly enough of of the place which was made all the better by the wonderful owners, fantastic hosts . we would highly recommend stables cottage to anyone, they will not be disappointed.thanks again for a lovely time angus kate and kids,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, robert, barbara and lee

Located in the heart of Corsewall Estate in the North Rhins of Dumfries & Galloway, surrounded by pretty woodland and overlooking an extensive walled kitchen garden, this recently restored cottage is a ideal base for exploring Galloway.

Walk down to the shores of Loch Ryan and around Wig Bay and The Scar – a circular walk along Loch Ryan shoreline and back into the village of Kirkcolm. The Scar, a sandbank which juts out into Loch Ryan, is home to one of the largest colonies of nesting migrant terns in the region. From an historical perspective, during the Second World War, Wig Bay, was used as a base for the flying Catalina boats – you’ll see evidence of this on your walk and also throughout the woods at Corsewall Estate, which was requisitioned by the Canadian Air Force during the War.

Stables Cottage is ideally located to explore Wigtownshire and Galloway. Explore some of the many sandy beaches or enjoy a walk in the Galloway Forest Park – which has miles of excellent tracks to enjoy on foot or by mountain bike. It also boasts the title of the UK’s first Dark Skies Park. If mountain biking is where it’s at for you, you can try the 7Stanes – seven amazing and varied mountain biking centres across Dumfries & Galloway.

There are lots of activities for children come rain or shine in Galloway. Head for Cream O’ Galloway – the ice cream factory at Gatehouse of Fleet and the children can enjoy the outdoor adventure playground or the Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory at Twynholm where they can get really stuck in to chocolate at one of the kids’ very hands on workshops.

For keen golfers, Stables Cottage at Corsewall, has some challenging and scenic golf courses close by – including the Dunskey Golf Club at Portpatrick and the Stranraer Golf Club designed by the great James Braid. Only an hour’s drive away is the championship course at Turnberry and a bit further north is Royal Troon.

There are a number of pretty gardens to visit - from the Logan Botanical Gardens and Ardwell to Dunskey and Glenwhan to Castle Kennedy where you will see exotic plants in abundance and riots of colour.

The Mull of Galloway, with a working lighthouse, which you can visit and climb right to the top of the light tower, is a must see. It is Scotland's most southerly point and on clear days you can see England, Ireland and the Isle of Man.
