We first came to Cat Island in 1999 for our anniversary. We were looking for a place for Rich to go bonefishing but that would also be good for relaxing on the beach with a cocktail. Over the next few years we went to several other island in the Bahamas, but we always came back to Cat Island. It felt more like home. We like to travel with friends, and try to go to Mexico and camping at least once a year, but it's hard when you can hear Cat Island calling your name. We live in the Northwest which allows us to fish for Salmon, Sturgeon, and go crabbing outside Tillamook Bay (where the cheese comes from). We also love going to central Oregon flyfishing on the Deschutes River. Rich enjoys golfing all over the West. I spend most of my free time in my art studio, doing yoga and volunteering at the Doernbecher Childrens Hospital, helping kids do art.
Lori Rome purchased this house in 2007
We bought the property in Bennett's Harbour in 2007. As soon as we saw it, we figured that there had to be a way that we could make it work. With the help and unmatched understanding and support of our three boys (Trevor Tyler and Zach~ The greatest kids on earth!) and the help a few friends we were able to build our beachfront dream home. We hope you agree.
One of the best things about Cat Island is the people. I have been lots of places, but have never met people who make you feel so welcome and a part of the community as the people on Cat Island. Whether its your first trip or you 20th, you'll feel like you've come home. It's amazing! Be sure to Drive on the left, and wave at everyone you pass on the road.
We had the pleasure of staying at this beautiful home on 1 of the most beautiful places we have ever been! We took the whole family including our 2 year old grandaughter over Christmas. The home is incredible, the people were amazing! We definitely fell in love and can't wait to return! The owners were so kind & patient to work with! We never tried the wi fi but didn't miss it, just got special minutes on our phone! The only thing we will take next time is baby oil for it made the sans flies not bite
Renting this house was definately the way to go. Have been to Cat Island a few times before and always stayed at resorts, but this beautiful house had everything and more. The advantage is you can eat what you want and when you want it, unlike being at the mercy of the resorts for your meals. Ricky the house manager was more than helpful. He was at the airport waiting when we arrived, took care of all our bags (and there were a lot) even checked in on us during the week to see if we needed anything, nice guy. Lori is very easy to work with when booking and everything was as shown on the web site. Very clean, and everything worked (accept wifi out on most of island, not her fault), she even has a rice maker, can you believe it!! Will be coming back next year.
The information on this house is exactly as presented. But the house is much nicer than the photos show.
I would consider it a luxury accommodation, when compared to any other house that I have rented, for a reasonable price. The owners are spending the money necessary to keep the house looking brand new, and very clean inside and out. It has a very large open kitchen and family room area, that accommodated our 7 people. The kitchen has the best stocked appliances and utensils that I have seen.
The house sits on a horseshoe shaped bay, surrounded by a beautiful sandy beach, and the Caribbean water is generally calm. We had family members from 1 year old to 62 years old, and the water was perfect for all to enjoy.
If you plan on any site seeing while there, you need a car. There are some small food stands nearby, but no stores/restaurants of any size within walking distance. The owners rented us an older suburban, that was clean and ran well. It does have an ignition switch problem. But, we found that if you only turn the ignition off till the tiny drive indicator light goes out, then when you turn the key ON again, it turns easily. If you forget and turn the key all the way Off, then you may spend 5 minutes trying to get the key to turn again. You will want the Suburban if you want to go to the Atlantic ocean, as the roads are bad on that side of the island. You never have to worry about getting lost, as there is only 1 major road that runs the entire length of the island.
The local people are very friendly and accommodating and spoke English. Reverend Johnson stopped by the day we arrived, and had good produce at a reasonable price. We tried to buy their food (local bread, cake and conch salad) and services as much as possible, as they don't have many opportunities to make a living. DaSmoke Pot has good food and a lively rake and scrape band. Grammy's also had good food.
This is the Real, old-fashioned Bahamas. Laid back and no metropolitan atmosphere. Good snorkeling 200 yards away
If you like crystal clear water, sand and sun, then this house is perfect . We are planning an even bigger family vacation for next year, and are planning on renting both houses.
We hired Ricky to take us out in his 19 ft Boston Whaler for a 1 day trip, for some great snorkeling, and the 3 guys then did some lobster fishing with him. If you are a good snorkeler and an adventurist/hunter his spear lobstering was a once in a lifetime trip!
Most people think of Atlantis/Nassau when they think of a visit to the Bahamas. We have travelled several islands of the country and certainly enjoyed brief stays there, but this is the perfect Bahamas vacation spot. The house is beautiful, just as represented here, but pictures cannot do justice to the view right out the back door and literally feet away. The majority of the time we were the only beach occupants and when others did appear they were friendly kids from the settlement or sea breeze next door. This house is very spacious and well stocked and suited our large family and our kids friends perfectly. Ricky, the caretaker is so helpful and a great source of island information. He also has the most jovial personality and genuinely seemed interested that we had a great vacation. Lori, the owner, is very helpful with preparation for the trip and how to see every thing this island offers while there. The island residents are friendly and despite the lack of development there, everything you really need is available. It took us a couple of days to adjust our pace to island time, but we thoroughly enjoyed the experience because its true relaxation. We have kids from 14-20 years old and they were so sad to leave. We could have easily stayed another week. This is perfect for adventurous types like us, yet perfect as well for solitary readers who just enjoy a chair on the beach and a book. From sea turtles to fishing to the hermitage you will find yourself with natural wonders galore. We will definitely be back to this house. Thanks, Lori!
My husband and I have travelled the family islands extensively over the past 15 years, and are avid flyfishermen who enjoy chasing the elusive Bonefish!! This was our first time to Cat Island, and the creeks are fantastic. We spent 3 weeks in total on the island but focused our 10 days at Baybreeze as a family vacation. Our grown children and their partners came down, and it was the BEST family vacation ever!! The home was extremely clean, neat and showed exactly like what is listed on VRBO and literally had all the comforts at home, plus a few! There were drawers after drawers of every kitchen gadget you could ask for, and the owners are very organized and haven't missed a thing. The margarita machine was well appreciated (smile).
All the locals are very friendly, and we got used to 'waving' hello to all......and drive on the left at the same time!! The main reason to go to an 'out island' is to appreciate the relaxing atmosphere, there are no "have to do this or that", it was true R & R. If your looking for tons of people, nightlife and shopping this isn't the place to do it. However, we snorkelled both on our own and with a local, utilized the kayaks supplied and went on adventures of our own. We saw turtles and fish, and walked the beach and swam in the beautiful waters right in front of Baybreeze. We had some snacks at Yardis, hiked the Hermitage, dinner at DA Smoke Pot, and we did a combo snorkel and dive trip with Frank at Shanna's Cove in the north.
Baybreeze was one of the most beautiful well equipped homes we have ever rented, and we definitely recommend it!!
My husband and I and our three teenage kids spent Christmas and New Year's at Baybreeze. It was a wonderful relaxing week...we needed to stay longer! The house was exactly as pictured, clean, confortable and decorated cute. Really, anything we could have needed was there. Lori thought of everything. We pretty much lived on fruit smoothies from the "Margaritaville" blender. The back patio and covered area were great for just hanging out and eating meals. Just steps away is beautiful soft white sand and turquoise ocean. We swam, snorkeled, and kayaked every day. Although we did see fish and a ray right off the beach behind the house, we found better snorkeling to the right or left near the rocky areas. We saw fish, turtles, rays, and a sunken boat. Very cool to explore. My husband and son brought fishing gear and caught bone fish and a baracuda. Cat Island is a unique and undiscovered by developement. We were glad to have use of the vehicle at the house to explore and see more of the island. The local people are friendly and helpful. Just about every time we went for a drive we would offer a local person walking down the road a ride. They were always very grateful for the lift and we enjoyed our visits with them...although we didn't always understand every word. They told us where to go to see amazing things, invited us to church on Sunday, to a New Year's Eve party, and gave the kids home made "cookies". We had a great time. No complaints. ( except maybe sand fleas that tended to come out in the evening ) Can't wait to go back! Thank you Lori and Rich for sharing your gem with us!
Two sea kayaks and several snorkels are available for you to enjoy. World class bonefishing in Bennett's Creek, Alligator Creek and Orange Creek. Several guides are available on the island to help you spot 'em tailin'. Ricky Dean is available to take you out in his boat for fishing, diving or snorkeling. (242)474-8042
There are several places on the island to go for a hike and see the ruins of plantations, the Hermitage, bat caves or fresh water blue holes.
Go exploring on the 'North Shore' to see the wild side of Cat Island, where you can explore through all manner of 'flotsam' blown ashore from the Atlantic. Shells along the water, you can even find fresh conch in the water.
Go down South and visit the 'Regatta Site' with it's colorful food shacks and have lunch with the locals.
