Young families like the RIVER BEACH & kiddies PLAYGROUND at Aubeterre (8kms). It's only 5 mins to the Dordogne border & from there it's an easy drive to Brantome, also known as the 'Venice of the Périgord' with historic sights & buildings, plus a vast choice of restaurants including the Michelin starred Moulin de l'Abbaye. Within a 10kms radius, there are many gorgeous villages, with ancient narrow streets, Romanesque churches, bags of history & interesting artisans, galleries & unique shops to discover. Then sip a cool drink on a shady terrace & watch the world go by at a leisurely pace. It's never too crowded, driving is usually a dream & there seems to be ample space for everyone in France. Going further afield, Bordeaux is a fabulous city to visit, as are smaller towns of Saintes with its Roman arena, La Rochelle, Rochefort (a naval town), world renowned Cognac, Bordeaux wine country with UNESCO world heritage sites like St. Emilion. Then there's Sarlat, Les Eyzies, Domme, Eymet, Monpazier. Local activities include golf & tennis at nearby Manoir de Longeveau (10 mins) which also has on-going events, concerts & barbecues. There's also nearby horse riding, canoeing on the river, bike hire and mini golf (ideal for children). Lac de la Jemaye (20 mins) is always a hit with families, with its lakeside beach, picnic areas, play areas and lovely walks.

Summer activities, festivals, art exhibitions & concerts are many & varied, not forgetting all the wine tasting opportunities - including the local Pineau & Cognac - and local markets bursting with colour & fresh farm produce.

Long sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast at Royan, St. George-de-Didonne, Saint-Palais & beyond are about 75 mins drive. There's also a zoo at Saint Palais.

After all that activity - or instead of - just chill out with a glass of wine & a good book in the garden, after a cooling dip in the on site pool.

Or have a SPA DAY (or half day) & BEAUTY TREATMENTS at Hostellerie du Perigord in Aubeterre (8kms)

It can be as relaxing or as active as you like.....................................

About Margarete Isherwood

Margarete & John Isherwood bought this old barn at Les Fosses in 2000 & converted it into 6 cottages, 5 of which were sold - to other Brits as it happens. Margarete & John retained No. 4 and enjoyed wonderful times there, renting it out in summer from 2003, whilst also starting their next development project about 5 minutes away. This was to be the last development, as sadly John died in 2005, leaving Margarete with the 2 French country houses & lots of precious memories. Both houses show some of John's watercolour paintings of scenes of France which he loved to paint. Margarete now rents out both houses and spends at least a month in Spring & again in Autumn in this glorious area of SW France. Ideally she'd live in France year round being a total francophile for over 40 years

Margarete Isherwood purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Margarete Isherwood chose Montignac-le-Coq

Margarete saw Les Fosses first nestling in its gentle valley as an original old stone barn, L-shaped with that gorgeous red tiled roof, in a small hamlet with fields all around. Stepping inside was magical with a warm smell of hay & old animal mangers & a sense of peace. Margarete was convinced she had found the next development project. John agreed when he saw it. And so it turned out to be......................

What makes this cottage unique

A rural French country lifestyle with lovely views from every window and from the wraparound terrace. There is total peace & quiet, no light pollution (fantastic stars at night!), no traffic noise & it's very safe for children. The pool always proves a great hit. In summer, there are usually neighbours if you feel chatty or wish to socialise, and other children for yours to play with. But you can keep to yourself if you prefer, there's plenty of space & privacy for all. Best endorsement is when a 2 week booking one year turns into a 4 week booking the following year.

Perfect house from which to access the area

  • 5 out of 5
The house was clean and charming inside. The description was accurate. Customer service was good. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative. The pool was great. You could eat outside and have stunning views and have privacy. The house is ideal for couples, families or groups. And best of all there is loads to do for all these groups within a short radius - including a safe river beach.

Ideal location to explore this area of France.

  • 4 out of 5
The property was all we needed for our lovely holiday. Owner's communications were prompt and helpful. Lots to do in this region, although we tended to stay by the pool. Aubeterre is pretty and L'Eglise Monolithe definitely worth visiting. Would happily return to Les Fosses in the future.

Beautiful setting and great neighbours!

  • 5 out of 5
We had a super week at No. 4 Les Fosses, Margarete helped us hugely by finding availability after we had been let down on a previously confirmed booking 15km away and we were so looking forward to it. The house is one of 6 converted barns and the only one that was being commercially rented last year. It has a lovely large open plan living area downstairs, 3 bedrooms upstairs and a nicely private dining / seating area with views over the sunflower fields. It is very comfortable and whilst we originally thought we would prefer a private pool, the shared one was great given the various non-renters who had their family members there with young children for ours to share / play with - friends were made who are still talked about now! The neighbours also came to our rescue in a big way when we had car troubles and having only met them that holiday we could not have expected as much, that typifies the spirit of the place. We had a lovely time and will definitely be going back to Les Fosses, there are so many lovely things to do and see in the locale also with Bordeaux accessible too.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very positive comments. Great to know the shared situation was actually a bonus, and that you will be back at Les Fosses this summer.

A great gite among the sunflowers

  • 5 out of 5
This was our first time as a family staying in a gite and I have to say we didn't really know what to expect apart from the information on the Holiday rentals website.

I have to say though we were not disappointed. The gite was lovely and clean and well maintained and the swimming pool in particular, got lots of use each and every day.

The gite was exactly as described and the Owner's instructions were easy to follow. The Owner was extermely helpful and provided lots of good tips prior to our visit.

Les Fosses is a great base from which to explore may of the beautiful adjoining towns and villages such as Aubeterre sur Dronne and Riberac.

Les Fosses is in an impressive location and is a safe and enjoyable place for children, and has the added benefit of having fantastically welcoming and friendly neighbours. We would recommend it to others.

For those wishing to escape the pressures of work and the dreaded Blackberry, Les Fosses provides a peaceful haven in which to enjoy a relaxing family holiday.

Fields of Gold!!

  • 4 out of 5
A beautiful cottage overlooking sunflower and cornfields with uninterrupted views and perfectly poistioned as a sun trap, giving a good level of privacy. Neighbours, if there, are very nice. A large property with plenty of space and character. Good parking and all the mod cons. Pool fantastic and very clean.

As the property is rustic and open plan, sounds of conversation, TV and creaking floorboards can travel through the property. There is no air conditioning or fans which can make the bedrooms very warm at night.

Otherwise a perfect cottage situated close to picturesque villages, towns and attractions.

Lovely Rural home from home

  • 4 out of 5
We spent 2 weeks at start of Aug. The house is well equiped and comfortable and was spotless on our arrival. The site is well maintained and in a pretty setting, we saw deer from the patio. The pool was well used particulary by the children, some days the water was a little chilly. The local town (5 mins by car) had all services. Good for a quiet and relaxing country holiday, well placed for visting many interesting places.
