SPECTACULAR!

  • 5 out of 5
This was a perfect getaway! "The barn" is a wonderful home, carefully maintained by Derek and Alison. It is warm, cozy... and those views! Wow!

Derek and Alison were wonderful hosts. As some of the other reviewers have noted, they stock the kitchen upon your arrival with some great tasting essentials. They are extremely knowledgeable of the areas you may want to visit, and go out of their way to be helpful.

We stayed pretty close "to home" (Derek and Alison really make you feel at home) during our visit. We had the pleasure of visiting the lighthouse for a special tour, set up by Derek. We also ventured into Cobh to delve more into the Titanic's history, and to Blarney's castle (where yes we kissed the Blarney stone! :-)). However most of our day trips were quick, scenic drives to Midleton or Whitegate for lunch and a little shopping.

There is plenty to do if you want or... you can just watch the ships pass outside your window and take nice leisurely strolls along the waterfront.

We can't wait to return!

A GREAT PLACE TO STAY

  • 5 out of 5
To: Anyone visiting Ireland,

My son and I enjoyed our week stay in the restored Barn, The accomodations were great. The place was perfectly clean. The place is indeed a "Beautifully converted barn overlooking spectacular Cork Harbour and Lighthouse". The rental included everthing you need for a visit, a complete kitchen with all the cooking stuff ( I cooked breakfast every mornning... Irish sausage, bacon, eggs and toast with marmalade.... yum) and a dishwasher for cleanup.

Our hosts ( the owners) were great. They provided us some necessary grocieries to start our week stay, including some incredible homemade bread and marmalade...yum ...yum. They also were very helpful to us with suggestions of points of interest and places to dine. They were the best of hosts for our visit.

The surrounding area is beautifull a "postcard " everywhere you looked. We had a rental car and explored many areas and sites. A couple of very nice beaches were within a short quiet walk.

I highly recomend this rental and highly recomend these friendly hosts, they are great people and were very interested in making sure that we had a good vacation (holiday).

Thank you D & A for a great time in Ireland. I would most definitely come back again.

EXCELLENT PROPERTY WITH STUNNING VIEWS.

  • 5 out of 5
The description of the property was accurate, if not understated.
The owners Derek & Alison went out of their way to be helpful from the moment we arrived, until we left,The property is maintained to an excellent standard, yet still homely. Their advice on places to visit and to eat were spot on.(Especially our arranged visit to the lighthouse, with an excellent commentary from Gordon, on its history and workings) Rosie's was a great place to eat and take a little Guinness or wine etc. Many many thanks again Derek and Alison for a wonderful holiday and we hope we may see you again in the near future. THE BEST VACATION EVER!

  • 5 out of 5
The cottage and view were spectacular. The kitchen was well stocked, the bed in the master room was comfortable and everything was meticulously clean. It was lovely to have morning coffee and breakfast overlooking the ocean and the lighthouse at the end of Roche's Point. What made this place, though, was the kindness and generosity of Derek and Alison. There were thoughtful gifts waiting for us-- Alison's warm, homemade Irish Brown Bread and Derek's orange-ginger-whiskey marmalade, fresh farm eggs and greens from their garden, and staples like coffee, bread, and milk. They made wonderful recommendations of places to go and arranged for us to have a tour of the lighthouse with the delightful lighthouse-keeper, Gordon. Gordon told us wonderful stories of the area and the ships that have come through Cork Harbor, and his lovely wife, Brenda showed us ship paintings. It was all so magical that we wonder if Derek and Alison even arranged the gorgeous weather we had. We will definitely be returning. We can't recommend this place highly enough. We miss Ireland already.

Roches Point Lighthouse, built in the mid 19th century at the mouth of Cork Harbour, is a short walk from The Barn. Here the busy shipping traffic, which includes pleasure craft, racing yachts, fishing vessels, commercial ships and cruise liners such as Independence of the Seas and the QE2 pass below The Barn. Cork Week in July is a sailing highlight. Midleton has great places to eat and shop. Jameson Distillery, Ballymaloe House and Restaurant, Cookery School and Gardens, Cobh Heritage Centre and Fota Wildlife Park, House and Gardens are all nearby. Lismore Castle and Gardens too are well worth a visit. West Cork and Kerry are within a day's tour. Dublin is 3 hrs away by train or car.

East Ferry, an attractive harbour inlet a short drive away, has excellent winter bird watching (waders etc) , pleasant walking, and a pub/ restaurant, as has Ballycotton.

You may of course just want to relax on the balcony cradling a pint of Murphys or a Jameson and enjoy the passing scene!

Other Activities: traditional music in local pubs.
