This is an ideal family holiday retreat, warm and welcoming, with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. This unusual three storey 13th century house lies in the heart of a beautiful medieval village. It has been renovated by its owner, who brought it back to life in absolute sympathy with its setting, revealing gems like hidden vaulted stone ceilings, and a 12th century stone column in the kitchen. The walls of the lower two floors are all rendered with traditional lime in delicious ochre tones that create a warmth throughout. Both the kitchen and sitting room have underfloor heating so you won't be needing your slippers! The vast kitchen with beams and flagstones, lends itself to those gourmets who would like to spend time cooking up a feast. The house is extremely comfortable and cosy, whilst on the terrace and in the garden you'll have a wonderful feeling of space and beauty - the perfect combination for a relaxing holiday.
We live with our four children forty minutes from Mont st Jean. I am a mum at home, and Roger is in the building trade. Having renovated and lived in La Maison du Pigeonnier for five years, we are now currently renovating another house which we bought as a ruin. This time it's for us to live in!
Naomi Bishop purchased this house in 2006
The area was already well known to us, Roger having lived here for nearly thirty years. We heard about this property by chance from a friend, who was told that it would be coming up for sale in the near future. We decided to make an offer that was accepted before the house was ever put up for sale!
We bought this house for it's location. It was love at first sight! The view was so breathtaking and the surroundings so tranquil. It is a property steeped in history, so very unique.
LA MAISON DU PIGEONNIER is a true home away from home...with an upgrade: a perfect patio, wonderfully appointed kitchen, antiques and tasteful furnishings, a wealth of books, magazines and novels, and even some DVDs (Hint: view the “French Exchange” there is a surprise within the movie…you’ll enjoy it). Add the wonderful locale to explore, and you have a holiday to remember.
To awake in the morning in the master bedroom, open the window and take in the stunning view, it does not get much better than this, a week in early April, temperatures between 17 & 24 degrees, not a spot of rain in the whole week just made the holiday. A group of 6 from 6y.o. to 70 y.o. and no one wanted to leave.
We have travelled through a lot of France in the past 30 years and this was up there with the best, visited Dijon & Beaune and the more local towns & villages, all were worth the small effort, the expanse of vines around Beaune were a sight to behold and a visit to a vineyard was more than enlightening.
No doubt we will return to Mont St Jean & this lovely property.
The pictures do not do justice to the size...where were pleasently surprised at how big all the rooms were. Lovely location, two resturants in the town itself, one only a 2 min walk away. Owners were responsive and even arranged for more wood when we burned through the first batch. We loved our time so much we are returning for two weeks in December.
Selecting a property from the internet can be a hit or miss affair. This property however, is a real gem and delivers everything promised in promotions about it. It is located in a beautiful part of Burgundy and is well placed as a base for exploring the region. Mont St Jean is a beautiful medieval village, typical of many hill top towns in the region. We loved every part of the house and the attention to detail the owners have incorporated in their restoration of this property. If we get the chance to travel from Australia to rural France again we would have no hesitation in staying there and have in fact recommended it in a personal blog read by over 1,500 people.
We stayed at le Pigeonnier for the fourth time and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The house is very well appointed, especially the kitchen. The views out on the countryside are fantastic. The village is charming with its ancient but well preserved chateau. The owners are very accommodating if needed but otherwise leave you to enjoy yourself without interference. The area around Mont St Jean is gorgeous and very quiet. We highly recommend le Pigeonnier.
Our stay in Mont St Jean was in one word magnificent. The surroundings, the peace and quietness, the house, it all exceeded our expectations. The house itself is not what I would call a common holiday house, it is far more than that. We had the feeling we were home: the space, the fact that it is so well equiped going from the toiletries that were made available to the fact that there is enough space to store your clothes, the spacious bathroom, the garden furniture, everything was there! It really was the ideal spot to get away from the hectic life back home. Thank you for a wonderful stay and hope next time that we have the opportunity to meet "live"!
In the village of Mont st Jean is a great restaurant 'Le Medieval', just a few paces from the house, a restaurant/bistro at 'Chateau Les Roches', and a cafe open on Wednesday and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons which often has concerts of all types and discussion evenings.
The village is full of history - the oldest mediaeval hospital in France, château, lavoir etc
There is a tennis court for hire from the Mairie.
On the 15th August there is the biggest brocante of the Cote D'Or in Mont St Jean where you can be sure to find a wonderful french antique. Otherwise each village has 'Vide Greniers' every Sunday during high season where you can find all sorts of antiques sold by locals.
Various outdoor activities - riding, cycling, walking, golf, and water sports at the Lac Settons.
