Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Mont St Jean - La Maison du Pigeonnier

Sleeps 6 plus baby

This is an ideal family holiday retreat, warm and welcoming, with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. This unusual three storey 13th century house lies in the heart of a beautiful medieval village. It has been renovated by its owner, who brought it back to life in absolute sympathy with its setting, revealing gems like hidden vaulted stone ceilings, and a 12th century stone column in the kitchen. The walls of the lower two floors are all rendered with traditional lime in delicious ochre tones that create a warmth throughout. Both the kitchen and sitting room have underfloor heating so you won't be needing your slippers! The vast kitchen with beams and flagstones, lends itself to those gourmets who would like to spend time cooking up a feast. The house is extremely comfortable and cosy, whilst on the terrace and in the garden you'll have a wonderful feeling of space and beauty - the perfect combination for a relaxing holiday.

Suitability:
  • Long-term Renters Welcome

About Naomi Bishop

We live with our four children forty minutes from Mont st Jean. I am a mum at home, and Roger is in the building trade. Having renovated and lived in La Maison du Pigeonnier for five years, we are now currently renovating another house which we bought as a ruin. This time it's for us to live in!

Naomi Bishop purchased this house in 2006

Why Naomi Bishop chose Mont St Jean

The area was already well known to us, Roger having lived here for nearly thirty years. We heard about this property by chance from a friend, who was told that it would be coming up for sale in the near future. We decided to make an offer that was accepted before the house was ever put up for sale!

What makes this house unique

We bought this house for it's location. It was love at first sight! The view was so breathtaking and the surroundings so tranquil. It is a property steeped in history, so very unique.

Lovely house for a relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely house with lots of character in a quiet village in a stunning and very quiet part of France. We really enjoyed our time here, despite quite a bit of rain! We visited Beaune, a beautiful town with a really interesting medieval hospital and enjoyed a day in Dijon, both in easy reach. We also enjoyed some walks nearby and the local restaurant Les Roches was a lovely spot and a perfect recommendation from Naomi for a belated birthday celebration with our daughter. Naomi was an absolute pleasure to deal with and we loved the thoughtful touch of a welcome cake! There were also lots of other little touches that made our stay feel really restful, the house is very well stocked with reading materials and the piano was a big hit with us. The views were stunning. We would love to come back again to this part of France.

April in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

April 30, 2015

Dear Naomi and Roger,

How nice to hear from you — and excellent timing. We’ve just finished the bottles of Volnay and Pommard acquired during our visit last spring.

Over the years (50 or so) Ann and I have made numerous visits to Europe. The trip to Burgundy brought us to the only quarter of France we had not visited in any depth, and we were delighted with what we found.

Along with our traveling companions Michael and Judy, we found your beautiful home spacious and inviting with separate floors for eating, sleeping and entertaining — the kitchen well equipped, the bedrooms comfortable, and the piano well tuned. In fact, the only adjustment required (by Judy, an interior designer) was to reorient the dining table perpendicular to the terrace so all four of us could share the magnificent view of the pigeonnier and the hills beyond. Given better weather, we would have enjoyed it from outdoors as well. But a little rain did not inhibit our explorations.

We found ourselves ideally located for ranging to all points on the compass during the day, while just down the street from two excellent restaurants at dinnertime. Another treasure of Mont St Jean turned out to be the hospital, which was actively being worked on during our visit. With all the medieval crosses around, I suspected there was a grand story to tell. How exciting to learn we were on the pilgrimage road to Santiago de Campostella and had an archeological dig going on just up the hill! We checked progress daily and ultimately joined L’Association Les Amis De Mont-Saint-Jean.

You and your friendly neighbors made our experience a delight that we will never forget. Many thanks and best wishes.

Nice and romantic place to stay

  • 4 of 5

We stayed there last winter. Out first impression: a very impressive little castle with the chimney in the living room, the large kitchen with big windows - scenic views of the landscape.

We could relax easily in this very romatic place.

Moreover we felt a little bit like lumberjacks - a great experience with chimney fire inside and white sourrondings and snow storms outside in wintertime.

Great place to stay!!!!!!

Escape from the Ordinary

  • 5 of 5

LA MAISON DU PIGEONNIER is a true home away from home...with an upgrade: a perfect patio, wonderfully appointed kitchen, antiques and tasteful furnishings, a wealth of books, magazines and novels, and even some DVDs (Hint: view the “French Exchange” there is a surprise within the movie…you’ll enjoy it). Add the wonderful locale to explore, and you have a holiday to remember.

A brilliant property in a stunning Location

  • 5 of 5

To awake in the morning in the master bedroom, open the window and take in the stunning view, it does not get much better than this, a week in early April, temperatures between 17 & 24 degrees, not a spot of rain in the whole week just made the holiday. A group of 6 from 6y.o. to 70 y.o. and no one wanted to leave.

We have travelled through a lot of France in the past 30 years and this was up there with the best, visited Dijon & Beaune and the more local towns & villages, all were worth the small effort, the expanse of vines around Beaune were a sight to behold and a visit to a vineyard was more than enlightening.

No doubt we will return to Mont St Jean & this lovely property.

Pefect for us

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do justice to the size...where were pleasently surprised at how big all the rooms were. Lovely location, two resturants in the town itself, one only a 2 min walk away. Owners were responsive and even arranged for more wood when we burned through the first batch. We loved our time so much we are returning for two weeks in December.
