About Dulcy Schroeder

“After living in this special canyon for 14 years, I realized that one of my favorite activities was sharing the canyon with others. Chico Canyon Retreat grew from that love. The location is unusually pristine and we have worked hard over the years to enhance that pristine characteristic as we work to return the land to its native state.

Dulcy Schroeder purchased this cottage in 1996

Why Dulcy Schroeder chose Chico

It is not often one gets to live where one would vacation, but that is exactly what happened to me. We spent several years using every vacation to visit cliff dwellings in the southwest. Then came the interest in the WPA lodges in our National Parks and the way natural materials from the surroundings were used in the construction. Put that together with a love of camping under the stars, mix it well, and the result was Chico Canyon Retreat.

What makes this cottage unique

In the morning, imagine sitting on the viewing deck with a cup of coffee as you watch the sun touch the canyon rim and move down the face as it illuminates the entire canyon. The many birds become active as the sun creeps into the canyon. Maybe you'll see a flock of turkeys passing by on the way to the creek. You may want to experience an early morning creek hike as you watch the canyon awaken. View the creek from the 1935 bridge on the property and let your mind wander past the beauty and into the history of what is before you: the cultural history of the Maidu tribe and the geological history of at least 75 million years. Fill your day with exploration of the hiking trails and creek or just find a special hideaway and curl up with a book. Cap your day with a hot tub soak under the stars. These are just some of the things that make your stay at the Canyon Cottage unique.

This was just what we were looking for. The cottage was immaculate and even had brownies waiting for us. There was not a person in sight the whole time, except for the amazing owner. The breakfast she cooked for us was wonderful, super healthy, and she really went the extra mile to make our time special. I highly recommend this rental!

Relaxing retreat

My husband and I stayed at Canyon Cottage for 6 days at the end of March. We are a couple who spent part of our vacation enjoying our own special interests at different destinations at the start of our trip and then spent the balance of time together at Dulcy's beautiful canyon property. When we arrived Dulcy met us at the gate to the road that weaves through the canyon. As we drove up to the cottage there were dozens or perhaps hundreds of butterflies flitting among the Lupines to greet us by the drive. Because we did not have a suitable vehicle to drive through the canyon, Dulcy provided transportation between our car and the cottage whenever needed. She is very accommodating and has a wealth of information to share about the area. The first morning I was there, Dulcy led us on a tour of the trails and river on her property. She also provides a detailed map of the property. One of the mornings during our stay, she graciously prepared and served us a home-cooked breakfast that included DELICIOUS syrup that she makes from flowers grown in the area. Although my husband and I did some touring of the local attractions surrounding area, we could have spent the entire time quite happily at the cottage enjoying its natural setting. I hiked and read and relaxed. My husband enjoyed heading out each morning to cast some flies. Although he did not catch any fish, he thoroughly enjoyed the river. In fact, after leaving Canyon Cottage we had one more stop at Point Reyes National Seashore. It was a wondrous natural site as well, but if we could have rewound we would have skipped Pt Reyes and spent the balance of our vacation at Dulcy's cottage.

The cottage is very comfortable, clean and well-suppled with necessities. Wi-fi is provided but cell service is not available. Dulcy does make her land line available if needed.

Starry, Starry Night

The cottage is clean and well-maintained. Wildlife is abundant. This is a peaceful retreat for romance or just to disconnect for a while (Internet connection is available for those who suffer withdrawal symptoms).

My girlfriend and I also enjoyed soaking in the hot tub under the stars.

Dulcy, the owner, is very personable and provides exceptional service that includes a tour of the property and a home-cooked breakfast with spectacular views of the canyon.

A great value. Highly recommended.

The cottage is located on 287 acres in a pristine canyon and is the ideal location for those folks truly wishing to get away from the hurried daily activities of life. Wildlife abounds here in the canyon. There are groomed trails and a mountain creek to explore and many special hideaways to discover.

Most folks don't want to leave the canyon but should you be touched by a bit of wanderlust, there are no shortage of options. Head up to the mountains where Lassen National Park and Lake Almanor are less than an hour away. Chico and the valley are only 30 minutes from the cottage. If you enjoy history, the Bidwell Mansion video and tour are a must see. Gold mining touched this area and creates its own tour. Winter brings the migratory birds and the Snow Goose Festival to the valley. Spring brings a spectacular wildflower display to Table Mountain, an area well known to plant enthusiasts. If you like Farmers' Markets, you should not miss the Saturday morning Market in Chico. It is one of the best. The University, CSUChico, frequently has activities on its lovely campus. The arts are an important part of the community so you will find lots of opportunities to hear music, view art, or attend dramatic presentations. And if you want to take a break from cooking, you'll have no shortage of good restaurant choices.
