Will be back !

Marlyn Lodge was quite a find. The online process to rent was simple and clear, as were the instructions to access the unit on arrival. As first time visitors to London and first time booking a place online, we were a bit apprehensive about what we would find. It couldn't have been more convenient, central to everything (the river, tourist attractions, transport, pubs, restaurants, supermarket, etc.), clean, quiet, roomy, very safe neighbourhood, all appliances worked, bed was comfy, etc. It is just as the photos show. And we commend caretaker Jorge and the cleaning lady, very friendly and helpful. Also the rent was very reasonable, considering all the above advantages.
The best recommendation is that we will rent it again without hesitation.

Great place to stay in a great location

We stayed in a studio at Marlyn Lodge and it was perfect from booking through to our stay. Christine was very helpful and answered any questions we had. When we arrived it was a very easy process. The studio was clean and a very good size with everything you need. The local area had pubs, restaurants and a small supermarket just around the corner. Easy links to all of London. We will definitely stay there again.

Would have been good... if we had hot water

I stayed here for 6 days in September 2012. We had a one main problem which explains our rating of 2 out of 5.

Our main complaint was the fact that we only had hot water for less than half a shower each and every day! Hot water was only available for a few minutes before we had only cold water. This was unsatisfactory for a group of three people.

Telephone contact details of the owners were provided but we could have more easily contacted someone to solve our hot water issue if there was someone at the desk in the lobby. As such we would have preferred that the desk in the lobby was staffed.

By the third day the owner did arrange for us to have access to an additional apartment so we could have access to hot water. However we only used the hot shower in the other apartment for one day as (1) when we entered that apartment in the morning the housekeeper and caretaker were there preparing food for their own breakfast, (2) when we entered that apartment in the evening the bathroom was filled with dirty towels, probably from all the other apartments in the building, and (3) we were advised another party about to stay in that apartment. The owners did apologise for the inconvenience and were arranging to fix the hot water problem.

Besides that, a few minor issues were that our apartment smelt a bit funny, the beds were a bit springy, and the wifi was temperamental (perhaps due to the reinforced concrete structure of the building).

The pluses of our stay were that the apartment was clean, quiet and located very close to public transport.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry about the problem these guests expierence with the shower, but we did not hear about it immediately.

Every guest upon arrival receives a letter from us with information in the apartments and we also say in this that if there are any problems or help is needed to contact us direct on the telephone numbers we give in the letter. The caretaker to the building does not remain solely positioned in the lobby as his work during the day takes him to other parts of the building. As soon as we learned about the problem with the shower we arranged for an engineer to attend and parts were ordered. As soon as these arrived the new part consisting of a thermostat for the shower was fitted and the shower worked correctly. During the period the shower was not working properly the other water heating appliances consisting of the central heating were working as was hot water to other taps and the bath in the apartment.

We did make another flat available for use to the guests for them to shower in. No complaints were made regarding this or anything else to us at the time. We have not recieved any complaints about the flat from other guests.

I would just once again like to say that we are sorry about the problem with the shower and to offer our apologies to the guests for the inconvenience this caused them. We do try hard
to be responsive if anything needs attention.

Great Place!

We three people have stayed at the penthouse for a week. The experience was great! The place was allocated within comfortable walking distance from Tower Hill tube station. The place was well equipped with appliances and necessities. We were staying during a rare cold snap in summer, and we found heating and the electric fireplace in the living room most helpful! I imagine the two will be great enjoyment in the winters too. Being at the top the place was quite and secure. And with the well-functioning kitchen and large dining table, having breakfast and occasional dinners were just enjoyable.

The owner is very kind and helpful. I recommend this property for all London visitors, especially if you want some quietness and spaciousness.

Good apartment

We stayed in this apartment for 8 nights in August. The apartment was clean and comfortable although the decor was very different to what is shown in the picture. It had a black sofa and black glass topped table and chairs. The kitchen and bathroom were excellent. It is in a very good position in London, close to the Tube and it is great having a supermarket in the building (Tescos). The only problem was that the airconditioner was very noisy and as it was quite hot at night so we had to open the window and contend with all the noise of London all night.
We would recomment this apartment as extremely good value for the money and much, much better than any medium priced hotel.

my experience on June 2011!

For what we payed was ok.
The advantages was: 1) that it was enough clean (especially the bathroom, which is very important) contrary of other apartments or houses that I had rent in London and 2) the distance that we have to walk to the underground, which was only 10 minutes (with the lugages 20 minutes).
The disadvantages was 1) the really bad mattresses (my back still suffers), 2) the really horrible sofas because they were too dirty to sit and finally the communication with the owner because I sent her every time over three emails to have an answer and many times I never got a reply from her and finally If i didn't call her on telephone I would never take the information that I need about the room.
I think that if I will visit again London in the future I would try to find somewhere better for my staying.

Owner's Response: I am very disappointed with this review because at no time during this person's stay in the apartment did she make contact with me to raise any complaints or to say that she was unhappy with anything. Upon arrival full information is given by us on the apartment together with contact details for myself and my husband and our arrival letter contains a statement from us that in the event that any help is needed or there is a problem "please contact myself or my husband" with office and out of hours telephone numbers given. The only contact I had from this person was a telephone call on the morning they were leaving to say the time they were vacating - no complaint was made about anything.

The apartment had been newly decorated, carpeted and a new bathroom fitted shortly before this person's visit. We have not received any complaints from anyone either before or after this person's stay regarding the quality of the flat or the mattress being uncomfortable.

The location of the flat is in fact only five minutes walking time from Tower Hill underground station.

I would emphasise, as can be seen from other reviews, we always try to be helpful as well as responsive. The fact that this person did not make contact whilst in London speaks for itself.

The location is great for visiting the historic & iconic sights within the City of London inc. St Paul's, Bank of England, Lloyd's, Girkin etc. We are situated only FIVE minutes walk from the Tower of London, the famous Tower Bridge & St. Katherine's dock with its bars & restaurants. Across the river, if your feeling brave, is the London Dungeon Exhibition. Pleasure boats depart from nearby Tower Pier both down river to Greenwich & up the river to Westminster and beyond stopping at various points including the London Eye & Shakespear Globe Theatre. A bus service (number 15) stops in Minories (located at the end of Portsoken Street) for Trafalgar Square, the Mall and Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly, London theatres and other attractions in the West End. The nearest underground station is Tower Hill on the Circle and District lines and is a few minutes walk from the apartments.
