HAWAIIAN PLANTATION COTTAGE STYLE IN RESORT LOCATION

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday condo in Wailua - Kuku's Nest

1 Bedroom / 1 Bath / Full Kitchen

Kuku’s Nest is freshly remodeled and new to the rental market. This large one bedroom (sleeps 4), ground floor condo, with full kitchen is a beautiful tropical home not just another rental. Bamboo floors, stainless appliances, fresh tropical colors, granite counters, new furnishings and decor, two flat screen TV, quality firm California king bed, lazy boy sleeper sofa, and free wifi. Unit has a/c, but it is rarely needed with ceiling fans and coastal breezes. Enjoy morning coffee on the lanai accessed from both living and bedroom, overlooking coconut grove, one of three property pools, and partial coastal view (see photos). Plantation Hale consistently brings in great reviews for best places on the island to stay. Property amenities include whirlpool spas, bbqs, clean convenient laundry facilities, and open air lobby with small library and computer area. Kuku’s Nest is in the “H” building, directly across from short walking path to tranquil Waipouli Beach. Accessible parking right outside your condo and ground floor location also makes this rental quite convenient for those with walking limitations.

Located in Wailua on Kauai’s Coconut Coast, Kuku’s Nest is nestled in the home of Ancient Hawaiian Royalty. Walk to many area beaches, shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The newly completed coastal walking / biking path provides opportunity to keep your vehicle parked, or within 5 minutes drive you can kayak or stand-up paddle the Wailua River, hike Sleeping Giant, visit several of the island’s best waterfalls, enjoy Smith’s Tropical Paradise luau & gardens, snorkel or swim at Lydgates tide pools, and much more. Wailua is also half way between the jungles of the North Shore and the nearly always sunny Southern Coast making a perfect base for exploring.

Aloha, My name is Cheryl O'Brien. I was born and raised in Washington State. After a first visit to Kauai in 1999, I immediately felt at 'home' and knew this is where I needed to live. In 2002 we purchased a house in Wailua and started a residential drafting, developing, and consulting business. My son grew up here, enjoying the great island lifestyle of surfing every day and many other benefits of the tropical friendly laid back environment. Raising him here was the best decision we ever made. We lived on island for 10 years, but due to family health issues have moved back to Washington. I am very happy to have purchased this little home away from home as a way to keep my toes in the sand:)

The name of the condo is Kuku's Nest. I guess how that came to be may not make a lot of sense... My full name is Cheryl Rose, which in Hawaiian translates to Kelela Loke. That has morphed into Kuku Loke (thorny rose)... and now just Kuku. So there you go!

Cheryl O'Brien purchased this condo in 2012

The Coconut Coast has always been what I consider the best place on the island to live. It is half way from the North and South shores, and has a good combination of local 'real Hawaiian' life as well as vacation 'destination spots'. Kapaa Town is my favorite area for great shopping boutiques and restaurants and has the convenience of grocery stores, banks, P.O., etc. The Plantation Hale complex sits along the ocean (Makai) side of the road and is an easy walk to the Coconut Marketplace shopping, Hukilau & Wahooo restaurants, as well as two grocery stores, two coffee shops (yes, including Starbucks;), and many activities. These units always get great reviews from travellers and I've been very impressed with the managment and maintenance staff.

PERFECT HOME AWAY FROM HOME!

  • 5 out of 5
Kuku's nest was the best place for our family to live on our week's vacation to kauai! Clean, comfy, great location. We appreciated that the property was rooster/chicken free, and we were never awoken by the crowing. Fantastic place for a family to call home on vacation. Owner is very nice and easy to work with.

AN OKAY PLACE FOR THE PRICE-YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR......

  • 3 out of 5
My husband and I wanted to celebrate our 30th anniversary on Kauai and chose The Kuku's nest.
Pros: A close walk to the Coconout Market Place (awesome hula show, farmers market and souvenir shops), the Fish Market (the Mahi Mahi, Ono, Pono and Ahi are THE freshest ever no matter what we tried, and the service was wonderful), Foodland and Safeway; the beach was across the street and down a sidewalk; The condo was centrally located between the North and South beaches/attractions and therefore was only 40 minutes each way to those particular destinations; The airport was not but 15 minutes away; The ground floor lanai made it easy to get to the AWESOME swimming pool right across the lawn; The beach chairs and fun noodles, beach towels and boogie board came in handy for our North and South Adventures.

Cons: The condo is right off THE MAIN AND ONLY HIGHWAY, couldn't leave our windows open at night due to the noise. The fire station/police station IS TWO BLOCKS AWAY and therefore, since it is the Main highway the sirens blared a lot. Day and night.
Since the pool is across from the lanai, the drunk guys at 2am were very entertaining as they shared their woes with everyone else in the complex. We ended up buying toilet paper, paper towels and kleenex since there were no extra supplies. (which, by the way was sad when we went to the front desk for some more supplies and were told it was our responsibility-nothing like drip drying)
Sleeping was made difficult because there was a plastic mattress pad under the sheets which kept us hot and uncomfortable even with air conditioning.
There is some construction going on next door to the complex, meaning extra noise from 7am to 7pm, Monday through Saturday.
The local beach is not for swimming unless you like to be taken out in a rip tide.

Other than that, we got a great tan, read a lot of books(especially from the excellent book supply on the bookshelf in the living room), rested in between blaring sirens and construction noise, relaxed on a whole lot of Kauai beaches and saw a ton of great sea life while snorkeling. (There is a very cool guide for the type of fish seen while snorkeling also found on said bookshelf)

I think we will try Maui next time.......

Owner's Response: Aloha Karin ~ I can't tell you how bad I feel that you did not have a positive experience. It sounds like possibly a series of unfortunate events during your stay, which I suppose is bound to happen, but nonetheless, I take very seriously and will do what I can. I have stayed at the condo myself often and never once had problems with loud guests. This complex is often reviewed as a very quiet low-key place. I can't help but wonder if there were some Spring Breakers that time of year, maybe even contributing to road noise... It's true there is only one main road around the island. Not really a "highway" in the typical sense as it is two lane and 35mph max, but because of this, the majority of complexes (with proximity to the water) are fairly near this road, but it's seemed to me that Plantation Hale in particular has done a great job with their buffer plantings. There is construction of a pharmacy on the same street, but on my last visit I was impressed with how well they are keeping the site clean and showing consideration for nearby resort guests. Hopefully this will be completed soon and not an issue. I'm glad to hear you felt it was a good value as I charge $95/nt in comparison with the $130/night for the unremodeled units owned by the association and $170 for remodeled ones, which I've heard are not as well remodeled or furnished as this one. I am definetely disappointed and very much apologize for the lack of supplies. I was on island myself recently and stocked the supply closet, so that will definetely be brought up with my housekeeper so as not to happen again, and I appreciate your bringing this to my attention.
Kauai is certainly not for everyone, and you will find more "resorty" places with more infastructure in other places. On the other hand if you don't mind some inconveniences of small town life and want more adventures than I've found anywhere else, it's great. I wish you well in your travels, and thank you for the review. ~ Cheryl

BEAUTIFUL CONDO

  • 5 out of 5
We've stayed for 3 nights and wished to have stayed longer. The condo is beautifully decoraded and close to the beach. The only thing we've noticed is the noise of the street. At night it's quite again and the nice pools and hot tubs are making up for the noise:). Great location!

SAVED FROM THE SNOW

  • 5 out of 5
Ahhh...Hawaii and the end to a long winter! The KuKu's nest was the perfect cool and cozy retreat at the end of a busy day exploring Kauai. The price was good, the space was well appointed and comfortable and the Plantation Hale resort is central to all the necessities.
A walk to the beach was a great way to start each day and we did not miss having an ocean view (I had thought I might). We enjoyed the pool and made friends with the Gecko on the lanai. One if our favourite accommodations near Kapaa yet. Thanks again.

GREAT CENTRAL LOCATION.

  • 5 out of 5
Great central location-easy to head out anywhere each morning. Clean, roomy and very comfortable condo. Good WiFi and cable tv. Kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. Beach chairs, matts and pool towels were a bonus....laundry was great (only $2.50 to wash and dry a load).
Owner responded quickly to emails and questions and great to work with. We will definitely return.
