Linda grows her own vegetables and has free range chickens on hand to provide some of the necessary produce for her wonderful cooking. She uses fresh, local produce where possible.

Lovely two bedroom cottage with south facing covered terrace, kitchen, living room and bathroom & large private gardens. Shared facilities include heated swimming pool, large covered barn with games, dining area, laundry room and fields to the south with magnificent gazebo. The ground floor comprises of living room and dining area, kitchen and bathroom. The mezzanine level comprises romantic double bedroom and 2nd bedroom with bunk beds. A roofed outdoor area includes 2nd dining table and four chairs and easy chairs. This faces the south with fantastic views across the hills. To the north is a large sunny private garden area (approx 30 x 40 metres), fully fenced and gated. A level grass area is surrounded by flowering plants and boasts wonderful views to the north and west. About Fiona Davis (Stephenson)

Paul and I grew up close to London and have travelled around the world extensively. My husband Paul is an eminent architect. Me, I am a passionate about creating exceptional gardens. When it comes to 'projects' together we make an exciting team. This is our tenth year improving this property. We love it, care about it, stay in it when we can. Why Fiona Davis (Stephenson) chose Verfeil

It was love at first sight! From the moment we set foot in the courtyard and admired the views as well as the sheltered nature of the site we were falling in love with it.

Peering through the letter box, we could see the original stone floors of the hall and elegant stairs winding to the first floor. The solidity of the stone walls and generous proportions of the rooms within the house was such a refreshing change from all the other properties we viewed, many of which were poor quality conversions.

We chose the region because we both love France and fell in love with the friendliness, space and rolling, unspoilt countryside of the South West. The peace and tranquility as well as the ancient bastide towns from the middle ages, still in abundance drew us to this historic region.

We decided to hunt for properties in the middle of December, in order not to be seduced by lovely weather! After a week of searching we came across this one, it stole our hearts from the word go.

What makes this cottage unique

The setting - views, each different, from all different rooms in the house, and all different areas of the gardens. So many of them. A south facing courtyard. Many outdoor facilities in the barns surrounding the main house - two of which are now providing further accommodation.

The sunsets, when the clouds are on the heavy side of wispy at dusk, the sunsets can be gloriously breathtaking.

The swimming pool, open from late May to mid October. 16.5 metres long means 3 lengths = 50 metres for keen swimmers. Widening to 7 metres and 1.35 metres deep throughout makes it ideal for pool games. Security gate and walls with generous lounging areas within.

The gardens, extensive, inviting and absolutely full of flowers from March to November. We have developed around 10 gardens around the property, from intimate spaces to sweeping meadows, each with its own character and each inviting itself to be enjoyed.

The location, in a hamlet with a few other house, with villages each way within a couple of kilometres, several bigger towns with weekly markets within 15 minutes drive and cities within 45 minutes.

The elegance of the house, the rooms, how it is now furnished, the gardens, the pool areas, the outdoor rooms.

The vineyards and châteaux of Gaillac, wine tastings and wine festivals. The region is famous for its summertime music fetes which welcome all-comers. Albi - sophisticated and historic, its vast cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec museum. Golf at Lasbordes, not crowded and, surprisingly, open to visitors. St. Antonin Noble Val - prosperous riverside medieval town with colourful, buzzing Sunday market. Kayak gently down the Aveyron to Cazals through spectacularly beautiful gorges. Cordes sur Ciel - one of the three greatest French hill town with artisan shops and famous Jardins de Paradis. Prehistoric caves, ancient castles, woodland and hillside walks, even cliff climbing if you dare! At night, the Milky Way is astoundingly clear. So many things to do, or just relax and observe the unspoilt landscape, flora and fauna all around you.

  • 30% deposit on booking and remainder due 8 weeks prior to your holiday. Cancellation charges apply. Security deposit required Euros 300. Bedding, linen and towels supplied. Additional cleaning can be provided and charged for during your stay if requested in advance. Payments by PAYPAL are charged an additional 2% (i.e. half the cost to us)

    The pool is usually opened in May and closed in September (depending on weather), it is heated with a heat exchange unit. Free use of pool towels (please wash these at the end of your stay). End-of-stay cleaning and bed-linen laundry. It is your responsibility to leave the property clean and tidy. If extra cleaning is needed at the end of the stay additional charges will be made. Additional cleaning is offered during your stay and before departure if you require it.

    Rental notes: Saturday is change over day, check in from 4pm depart 10am. Days and times are negotiable except during Early Summer/Summer/Christmas.

    A private chef can be arranged for some or all of the meals during your stay. We put you in touch with the chef in advance so she can tailor your catering to your requirements ahead of your trip.

The second bedroom is at the opposite end of the mezzanine level (separated by around 8 metres of balustraded walkway) with large single bunk beds, wardrobe and desk area.

Notes: The private gardens on one side of the barn are approx 30 x 40 metres, gated and fenced with fabulous views. There is a large, level lawn and pretty flowering borders. The heated swimming pool is 16.5 by 7 metres (at wide end). There is plenty of room for all guests to sit around the pool and relax. Two teak loungers are reserved for your use. Next to the pool is an orchard area with soft fruits, some vegetables and herbs. The south facing courtyard and open barn area is open for all guests, described above with games, cooking and dining and laundry facilities. The large meadow area to the south comprises a mown, level grass area (great for (supervised) running around and a magnificent wrought iron gazebo from which you can relax and enjoy the views of the valley and rolling countryside. Approx 1.5 hectares of gardens are shared.
