Anam Cara Villa is a unique vacation home located directly on the water in Little Bay, South Sound, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands. The Villa's spectacular private waterfront location is in a BVI designated marine sanctuary and near one of the last undeveloped landscapes on Virgin Gorda. The views off the decks and balconies range from looking directly down at sea turtles, various tropical fish and the occasional mantas swimming below to stunning views out to sea with endless waves rolling up on the offshore reef. To the sides and behind you are views of the surrounding mountains and hills of Gorda Peak National Park. Your closest neighbors are the parade of marine life below, pelicans and seabirds above and cows grazing serenely on the distant hillsides.
Anam Cara Villa is comprised of just under 5,000 square feet of tropical modernism architecture spread over two buildings designed for seamless indoor outdoor living. The five bedrooms are all en-suite. The three large master bedroom suites all have king size beds and large spa bathrooms complete with both indoor and outdoor showers, double vanities and soaking bathtubs. Upstairs in the main house are two additional en-suite bedrooms with private balconies directly over the water below. The main floor features a large gourmet kitchen connected to the outdoor living area through large 8ft by 10 ft doors and a unique breakfast bar with an 8ft by 5ft serving window. The kitchen/dining area merges into the living area which has two separate seating areas and stunning sea views. The lower level hosts a media room for watching movies or just hanging out.
Outside living features 12 separate decks and balconies each with it's own unique views. The centerpiece of the outdoor living area is your own resort like horizon edge pool complete with a swim up bar and outdoor sunken kitchen with barbecue. The saltwater pool has both a waterfall and laminar flow water features with fiber optic lighting. Pool lighting colors can be changed with a wireless remote control. All of the indoor and outdoor areas are tiled with natural travertine stone. You can choose to relax on the deck letting the marine and bird life of South Sound entertain you or simply hang out by the pool.
Just a short one mile drive away is the North Sound welcome center and dock where the various free water taxis will take you to the many restaurants, resorts and yacht clubs for drinks, lunch, dinner, shopping, or entertainment. North Sound is a destination unto itself whether it is Biras Creek resort, Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock Resort, Leverick Bay Resort or the new Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda clubhouse!
It was love at first site when we first ventured off the main road into South Sound. The drive was like nothing we had ever experienced. The road first passes along the waterfront beach with palm trees, then past a horse stable and working farm with cows grazing. At the end of the this short drive we arrived at the unspoiled Virgin Gorda we were seeking. The road opens out onto a stunning sea view facing into the gentle trade winds. We knew we had found our own Caribbean paradise, our 'Anam Cara.'
So in 2007 the adventure of building began. Our goal was to create a retreat where families and friends could gather in an unforgettable setting. A place for renewal and sharing. A place for remembering the important things in life like laughter and love. At the same time we wanted to respect and minimize the impact on this very special setting. We were the first house in the BVI to use the environmentally friendly ICF building process. We also wanted to take advantage of the natural cooling and refreshing trade winds in the architectural layout. Other 'green features' include dual grey water recycling systems for the gardens, cool roof technology and other 'green building' systems. All the rain water from the roof is captured for reuse in a large cistern. We wanted to keep the electric usage (and our bill!) low by using energy efficient water systems and lots of LED lighting. There is very little night time light pollution which makes for spectacular star gazing as well. There is no noise pollution as the only sounds are from the birds above and the sea gently rolling along the offshore coral reef.
Anam cara is an Irish language term meaning 'soul friend.'
According to Celtic spiritual tradition, the soul shines all around the body like a luminous cloud. When you are very open, appreciative, and trusting with another person, your two souls flow together. This deeply felt bond with another person means you have found your anam cara, or 'Soul Friend.' Your anam cara always beholds your light and beauty, and accepts you for who you truly are. In Celtic spirituality, the anam cara friendship awakens the fullness and mystery of your life. You are joined in an ancient and eternal union with humanity that cuts across all barriers of time, convention, philosophy, and definition. When you are blessed with an anam cara, the Irish believe, you have arrived at that most sacred place: home.
We hope that our home in Virgin Gorda will become your own 'Anam Cara'.
A vacation with nine friends (four couples and a single) can be fun and challenging. With so many different opinions and personalities, I was curious how Anam Cara was going to work out for all of us. Let me state right here and now, Anam Cara is a perfect place for having fun all together and living in privacy when you want. The bedrooms and bathrooms were huge with separate decks for lounging and private outdoor showering. And there were many options for lounging and sitting and reading as a small group or a large group (i.e. media room, large outdoor seating on the deck outside living room and around the pool, in living room, dining room, sitting rooms all over the place!). The kitchen was enormous for hanging out, prep, cooking, whatever. But everything has a view! It was perfect for the nine of us! NOTE: This was my first experience to BVIs not chartering a sailboat (which we have done for years). Usually we sail to "the Baths" and then off to Bitter End and area. Staying at Anam Cara was a welcome change to the places we could explore on beautiful Virgin Gorda and never got to see when chartering. We enjoyed staying at Anam Cara and also exploring the island. The people are so friendly. We still have a lot to see and look forward to coming back real soon.
Spectacular Villa on Virgin Gorda with amazing views and amenities. Perfectly located with gorgeous infinity pool and plenty of room for everyone. Paradise on a mountain. Have a chef come in and prepare a feast with local fare. Wonderful breezes, no need for AC. Amazingly relaxing. Can't wait to return. Plenty to do & see.
We had a wonderful week at Anam Cara! The house itself is georgeous and there are breathtaking views from every room! The drive to the house was a mile down a dirt road off the main road where we were greeted by chickens, goats and cows...we absolutely loved it! We ate out quite a bit and really enjoyed Hog Heaven for lunch and the view. One night our group made dinner at the house and it was as beautiful as anywhere you could go out! The pool area was spectacular with the waterfall and swim up bar area. The beaches were georgeous and snorkeling was perfect. Another really nice part of our visit to Anam Cara was that it was a "digital holiday". It was so relaxing to unplug from technology and really enjoy everything Virgin Gorda had to offer. We would go back in a heartbeat!!
I stayed at Anam Cara with a group for a week in November during the US Thanksgiving holidays. It's a fabulous house in a pristine location. I’ve been going to the Caribbean for over 20 years and it's rare you find s pot where you feel like you have the island to yourself. With only one house that is visible within your 360 degree view, you truly feel like you are on an island oasis. The villa layout is perfect for either coming together with family and friends, or finding your own nook to cat nap or read a book. The pool is beautiful and decking well laid out. The views are breathtaking with gorgeous sunrises over the water and lush, green mountain views all around you. The trade off on the remote location is the last mile is a bumpy dirt road, where you will be honking at cows to move out of the way; but it is manageable. Just don’t forget anything on your grocery store trips. Unfortunately the beach below the house was not usable because of an enormous sea grass bloom that had swept ashore, covering the entire beach with deep layers of dead sea grass. The bay in front of the house was full of it as well making it not swimmable for the time being. That was disappointing but obviously beyond anyone’s control. There are still lots of beaches to choose from on-island. The villa location is great for jumps on the ferry over to Saba Rock or the Bitter End. Also recommend Hog Heaven just a short drive away for the unbelievable views. Overall, a great experience and recommended.
We flew in from Los Angeles to this hidden treasure. I've never been to the BVI before but fortunately made the right choice by staying here. It's one of the most amazing places I've ever stayed.
The private villa is located on the water on the South Sound of Virgin Gorda. The patios, bedrooms, pool, and various areas of the house have an electrifying view of the horizon and water (that's what an island vacation is all about, right?). The house has lots of style -- it blends the best of tropical themes and is well decorated. The layout was perfect for a 5 person family and another couple who joined the trip (everyone had their own quarters). It’s equipped with everything you could ever want and more. I particularly enjoyed the pool, which is oufitted with LED lights, a swim up bar, BBQ, a waterfall with a secret bench under it, and more. There's great snorkeling off the beach right in front of the property. Also great for those who like to sit back and relax. Pictures don’t do it justice!
The area itself is very safe. I highly recommend this home to any type of traveler. Be warned -- it's going to be hard to leave!
Not just a slice of heaven, the whole pie... Driving down the meandering dirt road toward Anam Cara Villa, reminded me of the Outback's semi-desert environment with grazing feral cattle dotting the landscape. The house was better than the pictures, featuring several master suites, all having private decks overlooking the ocean. The compound is very private if you forget your bathing suit or loose your bag like I did, sun bathing is not a problem.Being a certified scuba instructor, I was able to use the large pool at the house to give a few friends pool instruction. We did open water dives from the beach at Savannah Bay about ten minutes from the house. It is a great location to learn to dive. There is a large reef full of sea life about one hundred yards off the the beach. Those of us that were not diving were able to enjoy the spectacular sandy beach. We stayed all day, grilled out and watched the sunset...very cool . Although there are myriad of things to do on Virgin Gorda, as the days went by we found staying at the house, laying out reading books, snorkeling out front , and generally chilling, was all everyone wanted to do. Why leave, so we didn't.
