Overview

Overview

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday home in Looe - Lantau Cottage

Large four star self catering characterful cottage sleeps up to 9 in 5 bedrooms

Located amongst the quaint old streets of East Looe, Lantau Cottage is an immaculately presented former 17th Century Ship Merchants' Cottage. Dating back over 400 years, the property is steeped in a rich history with many original features including panelled walls, beamed and gabled ceilings, oreil windows and a winding staircase that incorporates an original full size ship's mast. The Cottage is very well equipped for modern day use but offers discerning guests a flavour of days long gone. With quality furniture and soft furnishings throughout, guests will appreciate the attention to detail. The house sleep 8-9 guests in five bedrooms (3 doubles, 1 twin & 1 single) and is normally let from Saturday to Saturday. The Cottage is ideally situated just a few paces from East Looe’s sandy beach, historic harbour and many cafes, bars and restaurants. This is a no-smoking property and we regret that we can't take pets. Nearby parking for 2 cars including 1 space in the beachside carkpark.

Visit Britain Gold Award Winner: Lantau Cottage has a four star rating from Visit Britain and has won Visit Britain's Gold Award for outstanding quality for three years running.

Lantau Cottage was noted for its high standards of housekeeping and cleanliness and sits at the high end of the banding awarded. The Inspector noted 'the high quality furniture and carpets that are well suited to the character and style of the property, heating levels are excellent with central heating

fitted and additional wood burners, well placed illumination levels. Lantau also has high quality pictorial relief

adding interest. Original Elizabethan wood paneling and tapestries to bedrooms in Lantau are very impressive. Solid beds and deep supportive mattresses and well dressed beds with high quality linen and good use of throws and scatter cushions'.

Alistair Sawday's Special Escapes: Lantau Cottage is the only self catering property in Looe that is listed in Alistair Sawday's renowned Special Escapes guide. This is an independent guide that carefully selects unique high quality character properties. This is an extract from the guide:

'Gabled ceilings, wonky floors, a winding stair that includes a ship's mast and, in one bedroom, a stunning Elizabethan panelled wall: the house was built for a ship's merchant in the 1600s. Sandwiched between two tiny streets, spread over three storeys, it presents you with a living room with comfy sofas and a wood-burner, a dining table with church pew seating and ladderback chairs, a children's sitting room with a sofabed under the rafters and three double bedrooms, one single and a twin, two shower rooms and a characterful little kitchen. You're as snug as a bug and very comfortable too, thanks to new beds and super mattresses, white sheets and feather pillows, nautical pictures and lovely glass and china. '

Fantastic Cottage

  • 5 out of 5
We loved this cottage. So well equipped, so comfortable, so close to the beach and with an enchanting history! What a treat to stay in such a great place. The highlight was over-hearing a guided walking tour group stop outside and explain the history and the ship's mast. I felt hugely privileged to be staying in the cottage.

so convenient and characterful

  • 4 out of 5
we were very comfortable in this delightful old house - children loved it - and adults especially appreciated the comfortable beds, nice linen and lots of hot water. It is ideally situated for a family holiday and felt very safe which is important.
My only slight niggle would be that the soft furnishings in the sitting room are looking a little tired.

Un séjour de charme...

  • 5 out of 5

Perfect holiday cottage experience

  • 5 out of 5
We had an absolutely lovely stay in this beautiful, characterful cottage. It was perfectly placed for wondering around town and down to the sea and coastal walks. The house had everything we needed, looked amazing, and the owners were lovely and so helpful.
It was a fabulous holiday and we were all very sad to leave Lantau Cottage!

A perfect retreat for any time of year

  • 5 out of 5
What a fantastic cottage. The pics don't do it justice - it's made from lots of wood including ships beams and has all the character that goes with it.
Looe is a quaint little village tucked into the Cornish coastline. In this cottage we were all of 30 seconds walk (seriously!) from the beach and in the other direction, 30 seconds from the main street. There were 6 of us (parents, 2 sisters and my boyfriend) and we were very comfortable. It was lovely and well kept and there was fresh bread, butter, eggs and milk waiting for us. If you are visiting, you need to park in the main town car park then walk up the tiny street to collect the key for the car park near the house. This is a very old town with small streets and it's charm lies in the great fish and chips (Kellys), amazing icecream flavours and the close proximity of the beach and pier. Wonderfully ideal for anyone not into a night scene. Try The Old sail loft Restaurant and Smugglers Cott. Avoid Daves diner and Archies. Best make friends with the gulls - they sounded like a banshee at night but I missed them when I left. This place has the essence of holidays - I'd definately go back.

Get a glimpse of Looe's past by visiting the Old Guild Hall Museum, or wander the narrow streets, and sample the delights of the town’s award winning restaurants. Explore the picturesque village of Polperro with its jumble of whitewashed cottages. Its tiny harbour was once a thriving centre for the area's smuggling of brandy and tobacco. Or take the coastal path to explore the secluded coves of Talland and Lanivet Bay.

Looe is a great base in which to explore Cornwall and discover over six thousand years of legend, tradition and heritage from the moors, mines and mansions of the region. There are beaches for everyone, including the spectacular 4 mile stretch of Whitsand Bay which is a 15 minute drive away.

Springtime sees a riot of colour from the bulb fields of the Tamar Valley while the summer brings in an abundance of marine life to this area of outstanding natural beauty. Autumn sees a further transformation through the area's ancient woodlands and their flora & fauna.
