ONE OF A KIND, VINTAGE COTTAGE ON THE WATER'S EDGE: THE 'LOBSTER TRAP'

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Port Clyde

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-6)

Built by the sea in the early 1900's, the 'Lobster Trap' is a rare find, preserved in time and like the tide; constant and unchanging. From this enchanted cottage, perched just above the waves on granite ledge, the Atlantic Ocean is uniquely experienced.

'Inside, it is a cozy sanctuary filled with old familiar things, the intimate fireplace gives off a cheery crackle and welcome heat' one guest wrote. The guestbooks are filled with testimonials of unforgettable personal experiences at this magical place; the soothing rhythm of the tides, the mist and sparkle and smell of the sea. All of the senses are touched and it is difficult to leave.

Please take a moment here to read the owner's profile below as she shares her own story and welcomes you to experience the special treasures the 'Lobster Trap' has to offer.

To old friends and new -

Here I am where I most love to be, at the little 'Lobster Trap', at low tide now with the waves lapping against the shore, conveying a quiet, reflective mood; last night they were dashing themselves against the shore, white caps dancing, and the mood was one of exhilaration. There is such an immediacy about the sea here! Perched just above the rocks, you are always aware of the ocean's presence and of its every shift in mood. Sometimes I can hardly take my eyes off of it, and the hardest thing when I leave is losing that ever-changing sound of the sea.

Oh, and there was always the mounting feeling of anticipation with arriving here, which increased steadily as we neared the turn-off to the peninsula, the excitement increasing as we traversed the road we knew so well, then the first turn-off passing the beach, and then the lighthouse road itself, noting every familiar landmark and, finally, frenzied with delight, we were here, we children rushing around to rediscover it, our parents a little more calm, but pleased (this was repeated with my own children).

Then in the morning my sister and I would go leaping from rock to rock, around various points of land which revealed new vistas, even as far as the beach, picking up little shards of colored glass, shells, rocks, and an occasional lobster bouy, and sometimes slowing down long enough to sail our boats in the tidepools. We would wander the moss-lined paths through the woods which my father built for us (this is what I used to dream of when I lived at the other end of the country!). We explored the woods which were everywhere around us at that time, of course going to the beach, the more casual lifestyle, everything!

So I commend it to you!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1929

My memories of the cottage go way, way back to early childhood. My father and mother bought the cottage the year I was born, so it has always been a major part of my life. It remains substantially unchanged in it's interior arrangements because I have chosen to cherish all the family history that was a part of it. Changes have been made, of course; no, we don't use kerosene lamps anymore, we have a woodstove instead of a stone fireplace and chimney and replacements over the years, but the basics remain. Small but precious little touches have been added through the years, not only by me, but sometimes by others who have come to stay and left a part of themselves here. I love it! So, in a sense, the 'Lobster Trap' chose me!
